Some Kinda Voodoo Chile

An original song in celebration of Jimi... play it loud enough for him to hear! :-)
Some Kinda Voodoo Chile
Well the wind dropped just for a moment, the whole scene went kinda still
The guy on the sidewalk picking pockets turned and looked at me and whispered “what the hell you doing man?”
I looked blank and showed him the palms of my hands, nothing up my sleeves...
He said "there’s something different ‘bout you...
You some kinda voodoo chile?
You some kinda voodoo chile?"
And then he ran just as the storm kicked in…
Well the birds were blotting out the sky with amazing patterns ‘gainst the darkening clouds
Everyone stopped to watch, I cried aloud “Lord, my train is coming“ and as the engine thundered in, the birds dropped out of the sky
And the porter said "there’s something different ‘bout you...
You some kinda voodoo chile?
You some kinda voodoo chile?"
And then they all flew just as the storm kicked in…
You some kinda voodoo chile?
You some kinda voodoo chile?
I was wandering through the desert with a girl I had just met
When the lightning hit a joshua tree ‘bout three feet to my left
I kept on singing my love song, pretended I hadn’t heard
But a voice came out of the dark clouds above and rumbled "there’s something different ‘bout you
You some kinda voodoo chile?
You some kinda voodoo chile?
You some kinda..."
(And so we ran just as the storm kicked in…)

@Rick-4-1 - Rick Medlock; drums, percussion √

Phil McWalter - Main vocals and the other stuff √
I wrote this track for a great man; the late Steve Howell; the father of hollowsun.com (amongst much else of course). [Lyrics below]
RIP
A huge thanks to Lisa, Ray and Rick for making this possible (or at the very least an awful lot better! ;-))
IT'S A HOLLOW SUN - (Technological Delete)
Sometimes you’ve got to take less than, your strength can
And sometimes you have to give more than, the next man or woman, or child
It's a hollow sun (rpt)
That shines down on some of us
Burns hot upon my neck
Looks down on what we do
Sticks my shadow next to you
Sometimes you have to give...
Hold your hands up singers and
Lean your heads right back
Make a circle with your fingers
And look through that
With your radio eyes
Look at the worlds beyond the skies
See the possibilities
Then think; it's easier to grow trees
And stick with the water, sun and air (son and heir)
Than jump a metal tube flare
Across the interstellar space
To grow up in some distant alien place
Now see the people here around
That are prepared to give some ground
To share a space, a bite to eat
Embrace Technological Delete
[Come one let’s slow down
Suck some faith]
Sometimes you’ve got to take less than...

Everybody Knows Gene - [Conover/McWalter]

This was a bit of an hommage to George Martin for me. Bruce's track was so redolent of the Beatles already. The @conover bed included the main man singing the eponymous title lines "Everybody knows Gene..." and the lovely rich "bum, bum, bum" and "la, la, la..." bits! I cut it all up and sellotaped it back together in a different order; added lyrics, the song verse/chorus, and the additional orchestration (brass, guitars, strings etc). Good fun working with BC material as always! (Isn't the bass line stunning for one example!) Lyrics below.

Everybody knows Gene...
And everyone is looking for you
Everybody seeks you out
No-one wants a party
If Gene isn’t about
Are you hiding in the garden?
Are you swimming in the pool?
Is there music in the kitchen?
Are you on the hill you fool?
Everybody knows Gene...
We’re all counting on you coming
All gathered in your name
We’ve filled a dozen toasters
Got the music and the games
Are you hiding in the attic?
Are you down inside the den?
Can we hear you in a cupboard?
Or have you upped and fled again?
We’re playing hide and seek with Gene
Everybody knows Gene...
We’re playing hide and seek with Gene
We’re all counting on you coming
All gathered in your name
We’ve filled a dozen toasters
Got the music and the games
Are you hiding in the attic?
Are you down inside the den?
Can we hear you in a cupboard?
Or have you upped and fled again?
Everyone is looking for you
Everybody seeks you out
Are you hiding in the garden?
Are you swimming in the pool?
Is there music in the kitchen?
Are you on the hill you fool?

The Wormhole of Sleep
[But I can't sleep... If I can't wake up soon]
Even the strangers in my dreams are stranger
I’m not getting paranoia
But I can’t sleep it's weirder
I wake up fighting with a creepy myself
The people in my head
Have climbed into my bed
They’re watching my dreams
Concocting little schemes
As I swim in the water
Run from the slaughter
Jump across streams
Of sweaty scary dreams
I daren’t go to sleep
Not even a peep
My pillows too hot
So I dive off the yacht
But there’s worse in the dark bubbles...
Below
Keep getting sucked down
Gravity’s grown
Feeling like I could drown
If I can’t wake up soon
If I can’t wake up soon
But I can’t sleep
But I can’t sleep
They’re watching my dreams
Concocting little schemes
As I swim in the water
Run from the slaughter
Jump across streams
Of sweaty scary dreams
I daren’t go to sleep
Not even a peep
My pillows too hot
So I jump...

A Way Out
I'm looking for a way out
I'm looking for a way out
But
Like a fish in a bowl
Can't see what's coming round
Can't see what's coming round, round me
Don't tell me that you know what it's like
Don't tell me you'll get under my psyche
Don't tell me you got a feel for these things
'cause babe I'm on my own in this
I'm on my own in this...

Sometimes we dream as we tick along... Get Smaller To Get Bigz
Why don’t you fly with me
Enter the night
Into the pie and the gravy
The dusk is dark with the starling clouds
Black tie
Black sky
Splash in the puddle of mine eye
Oh the pavements tick tick tick tick tick tick
And sigh
So why don’t we fly
Under the Albert Bridge
Why don’t we fly high
Along the Embankment
Why don’t we... fly
Have a wobble
Up into the sky
Leave your bag
Leave your cigs
Get smaller to get bigz
Me? No!? It’s just the wind in my eye
Why don’t you fly with me
Why don’t you fly with me
Over the river we go
Look at the flow-wingman
Can you see the Houses of P?
And down to the big wheel?
Aye aye!
Off we go!

Please give it a listen...
A perfectly good guitar has no songs in it
unless you rub it with alcohol fire ‘gainst the edge of the night
Oh you'll get no sleep, you'll get no rest, once you've woken it up...
We'll hear you cry with pain
But once your hands are bloody and the thing is plugged into your heart
you'll never sleep again and the morning brings no peace
You just have to play
Play on…
Well only love
Slows down the song
It’s only love
Play on...

Take it right down
You can get it from here
Pull it right down
You look up to the sky boy
Take it right down
When you walk
When you talk
When you look
When you hear
When you dream
When you think...
Take it right down
If you run
If you climb
If you glide
If you jump
If you play
Compete but...
Take it right down
We can dance all the way
Pull it right down
Feel the high and the low
Take it right down
When we pray
When we hope
When we smile
When we cope
When we blaze
When we toke
When we cough
When we choke...
Take it right down
If we dance
If we call
If we share
If we sing
If we fall
If we give
If we need...
If we starve or we feed
Take it right down
You can get it from me
Modulate now boys (Pull it right down)

Catching The Bird - (THE SPRING RITUAL) - Clouders for/Phil McWalter

This track was based on a great instrumental track that Hans - @clouders_for sent to me with a 'sing or play' option for a collaboration! It is brilliant and great fun, it made me want to jump around so we continued on that imminent summery dancing theme... PLAY LOUD... NO!, LOUDER & GO CUCKOO!! ROFL!!
All guitars, bass, drums are Hans, I added a little bit of synth/samples and the drop, but that was it. Hat's off to Hans!
It of course bows its head to the original 13th century (oldest known round and six part independent counterpoint) "Summer Is Icumen In" youtu.be/sMCA9nYnLWo
I also avoided their use of the word "farteth"; to save offending your more courtly, or less pastoral, bucolic and rustic sensibilities ;-))
Remastered with Butch Vig 24.05.16
Catching The Bird (The Ritual)
People want to see the summer coming
Singing cuckoo
Everybody’s dancing ‘round the maypole
Calling my name
But its time to go to bed now
Leave me alone
People want to see the summer coming
Singing cuckoo
The night’s are getting shorter
Nobody’s spared
We’re making nests for lovers
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard?
We’re catching the bird
Catching the bird…

It is brilliant and great fun, it made me want to jump around so we continued on that imminent summery dancing theme... PLAY LOUD... NO!, LOUDER & GO CUCKOO!! ROFL!!
All guitars, bass, drums are Hans, I added a little bit of synth/samples and the drop, but that was it. Hat's off to Hans!
It of course bows its head to the original 13th century (oldest known round and six part independent counterpoint) "Summer Is Icumen In" youtu.be/sMCA9nYnLWo
I also avoided their use of the word "farteth"; to save offending your more courtly, or less pastoral, bucolic and rustic sensibilities ;-))
Remastered with Butch Vig 24.05.16
Catching The Bird (The Ritual)
People want to see the summer coming
Singing cuckoo
Everybody’s dancing ‘round the maypole
Calling my name
But its time to go to bed now
Leave me alone
People want to see the summer coming
Singing cuckoo
The night’s are getting shorter
Nobody’s spared
We’re making nests for lovers
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard?
Haven’t you heard?
We’re catching the bird
Catching the bird…

Been running to look round corners
Climbing to the top and calling
Calling to you but I

It must be good to be a hero
It must be cool to get it right all the time
It must be good to be a hero for you…

You didn’t really like the way it looked
It turned your head round in an instant
Don’t turn away
Oh yeah you just turned away
Just look at all the colours passing by
You never really get to touch them
Don’t turn away
And all the truest things you never said
All left unpainted on the canvas
Don’t turn away
You’re lost inside you
Can you hear me ?
Well can’t you come out to play ?
But don’t turn away
You don’t really like the way I smile
Can’t see how bright we’re really glowing
We peer at you through frosted glass
But never get to taste the cocktail
Don’t turn away, turn away
Oh yeah you just turned away
Well we were only given this one chance
To see the world before the night falls
Don’t turn away
And now you know the cold is on its way
That wind aint just to blow your hair girl
Don’t turn away
But oh yeah you just turned away
Like they’ve given you the universe to hold, (while he’s busy)
Shake it up
Make it rain
Make it shine
But make it count
Don’t turn away

Golden Rooms
I made an awful lot of money
Selling things that made non-sense
Even though the echoed boom
Is distant in your mind
My beds stand in golden rooms
I never meant to be unkind
I ask the nurse to help my pain
She gifts a smile, I feel no gain
My family talk amongst themselves
Like muted books on lawyer’s shelves
The hurt goes way beyond my call
I feel the dark and want to fall
Set me free
Free from all this pain
Take my money, and take my soul but
Set me free and let me die
Don’t toss a coin and count my sighs
Please set me free
My landing may not be so soft

My coffers full are held aloft

But all this cannot buy me peace

It's a lonely walk back from the crease

A grimace for every cough unlocked

Come death, come quickly, chains unfrocked.

England, bound in with the triumphant sea
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:
That England, that was wont to conquer others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.
Ah, would the scandal vanish with my life,
How happy then were my ensuing death!

Golden Rooms
I made an awful lot of money
Selling things that made non-sense
Even though the echoed boom
Is distant in your mind
My beds stand in golden rooms
I never meant to be unkind
I ask the nurse to help my pain
She gifts a smile, I feel no gain
My family talk amongst themselves
Like muted books on lawyer’s shelves
The hurt goes way beyond my call
I feel the dark and want to fall
Set me free
Free from all this pain
Take my money, and take my soul but
Set me free and let me die
Don’t toss a coin and count my sighs
Please set me free
My landing may not be so soft

My coffers full are held aloft

But all this cannot buy me peace

It's a lonely walk back from the crease

A grimace for every cough unlocked

Come death, come quickly, chains unfrocked.

England, bound in with the triumphant sea
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:
That England, that was wont to conquer others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.
Ah, would the scandal vanish with my life,
How happy then were my ensuing death!

The Ant Boy And His Girl
two ants met in a laundry
just looking for some fun
they thought it was a funfair
and so they trot along
the buildings and the hustle
the noises and the smell
the colors and the creatures
and many more to tell
they lionized a thrill ride
the ant boy and his girl
and without hesitation
they gave it a whirl
two ants met in a laundry
they had a lot of fun
though after all they did it
they wished they hadn’t done

Hendrix was such an incredibly intuitive and inventive guitar player and great songwriter; he didn't hold a strat, it grew out of his soul. This is a sketch of one of his beautiful thoughts. Hendrix was such an incredibly intuitive and inventive guitar player and great songwriter; he didn't hold a strat, it grew out of his soul. This is a sketch of one of his beautiful thoughts. It's not meant to be a facsimile, it's just meant to refresh a memory, a little tiny bit of the wonder of the prophetic and charming voodoo chile. Fly on Jimi, fly on...

HOLLA!
I'm going to make a big hole in the atmosphere
Sing it out loud for the world to hear
We can't serve two masters in one house and live
Tell a heart consume and take
Be selfless and give, no, no, no
But I suppose you can if you twist the truth a bit
Divide and conquer, bully with your lawful shit
Make the world your oyster
Then smoke it out
Bred for pearls that stack up in someone's bank account
It's like they're just drawing them out with charming lies
And what they don't know, it won't hurt a bit
Cos they charmed and they bullied with their lawful shit
I'm gonna make a big hole in the atmosphere
Sing it out loud for the world to hear
Sing it out loud for the world to hear
Sing it out loud for the world to hear

Spellbound
I can see all of you
Inside my head
The ones that look shiny
The ones still in bed
You shout at your cell phones
Talk in your sleep
You sit in the cafés
Wait in the street
Let us walk quickly now
Come on, let us run
Get caught in a shower
Stretch out in the sun
I was spellbound
I was amazed
Simply spellbound, spellbound
I can see all of you
The ones that look shiny
The ones that look dead
Fish for the big one
Dream of a win
Look for the answers
Eat out of a bin
I was spellbound
I was amazed
Simply spellbound, spellbound
I can see all of you
Take a hike through the mountains
See your baby born
Play your music too loud
Hide in the corn
Is it a small loan
Or is it too much to lend?
You all know for certain
How it will end
So stack up the building blocks
And start a fire with sticks
We all like some magic
But do you see all the tricks?
I can see all of you
Inside my head
The ones that look shiny
The ones that look back
I can see all of you
Simply spellbound

Firstly memorise the words below whilst you get into a relaxed pre-hypnotic state.
Artificial mood enhancers are allowed if it's OK with your parents.
Before turning off all the lights attach two torches to your head using an old sweatband or something similar. (Yes one torch each side, facing forward like your eyes...).
Place a screen/room divider behind you (landside).
Turn the torches on, and turn out the lights.
Now sit in a revolving office chair in the dark.
Start the track and slowly rotate by gently pushing with your feet in a clockwise direction.
Lighthouse speed not light speed, grow up.
Sing the words below in your head. Add echo and gravitas.
When you can make them fit, record and send to me.
Come on, play it louder...
Yes, you can put the lights back on if you're finished rehearsing.
Mostly 10/4 in D @ 120bpm

Shipwreck [After visiting Portland Bill]
Standing like a lighthouse
Feeling the sea
Sucking my feet away
Shining through the mist
Calling through the screams
Blinded by the dark but reaching out
Hoping it keeps you from the rocks
Look out for me
Turn your head and your course
This is just a warning
This is just the curse
Held on the rocks with the barnacles growing
Blind-watching out with salt in my eyes
The noise of the wind, the sting of the splash
The cold, oh God the lonely timeless cold
Shipwreck shipwreck
Don’t run aground
Mend your torn sails
Strap that beam
Lookout be ready
I’ll be looking (out)for you

I wanted to buy you a house
Maybe up on a hill
Where we both could have lived
Where we both could have died
But it cost too much money
I don't have the wherewithal
I'm sorry
I wanted to give you a view
A little river bank
Where we both could have watched
Where we both could have walked
But it cost too much money
I don't have the wherewithal
I'm sorry
But it's not easy

Pull down the posters tell ‘em; I’m found
Send all the dogs home tell ‘em; I don’t need a hound
Turn back the news crews get ‘em out of town
Fire off your rockets and follow me down
Follow me down Follow me down
Follow me down Follow me now
Amber - you’re so magnificent
Amber - you run away
Tighten the crossbow and stand in my way
William Tell apple is going to say
Amber’s initials... and an autograph line
Black and white pictures will set me in time
Amber - you’re so magnificent
Amber - you run away
Amber - you’re so magnificent
Amber - you were the rain

My own original demo version is here: soundcloud.com/phil-mcwalter/g...er/golden-rooms
Golden Rooms
I made an awful lot of money
Selling things that made non-sense
Even though the echoed boom
Is distant in your mind
My beds stand in golden rooms
I never meant to be unkind
I ask the nurse to help my pain
She gifts a smile, I feel no gain
My family talk amongst themselves
Like muted books on lawyer’s shelves
The hurt goes way beyond the call
I feel the dark and want to fall
Set me free
Free from all this pain
Take my money, and take my soul but
Set me free and let me die
Don’t toss a coin and count my sighs
(Please) set me free
My landing may not be soft

My coffers full are held aloft

But all this cannot buy me peace

The lonely walk back from the crease

A grimace for every cough unlocked

Come death, come quickly, chains unfrocked...

NOW
Cruise control would be nice tonight
As we drive along the coast
Lose control we might
But only these two will know
Looking at me in the rearview
All I know is that I really need you
Now
The top is down and the wind is crisp
There’s a light out on the sea
Messages on radio
That only these two will know
Looking at me in the rearview
All I know is that I really need you
Now
There's a light out on the sea
But only these two will know
Now

Another creaky old cassette track from when all guitar amps were made from hot, glowing and buzzing electricity held together with a few drops of melted solder and thin glass vacuum jars. Pure loud magic. A great shame cassette tape doesn't age so well...
I wrote this song whilst staying out on our farm in Donegal for the summer. I was thinking about the Dirty Duck pub and friends like Simon Christie and the late Big Jim Gallagher and what they were getting up to back in Stratford upon Avon.
Battery Walkman (old cassette) to digital... Sorry about the quality of the tape hiss!
Five Tough Men were:
Mark Steeds - Keys
Mark Yakes - Bass
Rick Medlock - Drums
Phil McWalter - Guitars and vocals

A further trans-atlantic collaboration with the very talented @ray-mcginnis. Always an honour and a pleasure. You can also comment on this track on Ray's cloud too: soundcloud.com/ray-mcginnis/ca...ginnis-mcwalter
Ray sent me some superb stems, I just put them in an anti-grav vase. Luckily the new arrangement worked with our rockets' décor... but please dim the LEDs, get comfortable, turn it up loud and dream along out of the space station in disembodied flight down to the new world below being explored by your AI's...
Author's Note: The enigmatic implication of the repeated question "Can you hear me?" may mean your AI drone may sadly never receive the response that we hear... (before losing power or having to return to base unrequited?)
Ray: Keyboards, bass, guitars, drums and space girl/AI!
Phil: Vocals, lyrics, melody, additional lead keyboards, production, mastering
Can You Hear Me?
I’m wondering how we never met
Wandering here should have put us close
As close as we’ll get (as close as we’ll get)
And we never touch, we never talk
We never look, we'll never walk yet
The mountains are all around us
Seas surround us but
The mist, it's in our eyes
Can you hear me?

They Won’t Leave My Heart Alone
Memories, they won’t leave me on my own, tonight
Walking home, they won’t leave my heart alone, tonight
You have brought me closer to nothing I’ve known before
You have bought me closer to what I need
Why do the people all worry when there’s nothing to worry at all?
Why do the people all scurry when the truth comes to call?
Memories just may bring me to my knees, tonight
Walking home I won’t take it all alone tonight
‘Cos you have brought me closer to what I was longing for
You have seen me closer to what I need
Why do the people all worry when there’s nothing to worry at all
Why do they all start to scurry when the truth comes to call?
Memories, they won’t leave me on my own, tonight
Walking home, they won’t leave my heart alone, tonight
‘Cos you have brought me closer to what I was longing for
You have seen me closer to what I need
Why do the people all worry when they hold to their pride and fall
Why do they all start to scurry when the truth was nothing at all
Why do the people all scurry when the truth comes to call?
Why do the people all worry if there’s nothing to worry at all?
Memories yeah...

Why do they all start to scurry when the truth was nothing at all
Why do the people all scurry when the truth comes to call?
Why do the people all worry if there’s nothing to worry at all?
Memories yeah...

I feel like hell
Someone must have sprayed me with ‘old’
I still wanna fight everything, but I just got sold
I’m off to the organ farm
They’re going to make me make something for free
Oh Lord, they’re gonna recycle me
Oh Lord, they’re gonna recycle me
I’m all for the future
But I wanted to leave more than the key
And not just a voucher
To clear out my property
Please, let the sun beat down on my face for the last few days
But it rains like there’s no tomorrow
No tomorrow
Well, I could be a kidney, yeah
I could be an ear
They may even grind me down to help thicken the beer
Wonder have I forgotten something I should have done?
I’ll never know, if I had enough fun
I’ll never know, if I had enough fun
They’ll come and fetch me
Or I can go on the bus myself
It comes on a Wednesday
They don’t like you to make a fuss
God let the sun beat down on my face for the last few days
But it rains like there’s no tomorrow
No tomorrow
So sing me the sad song
And I’ll sing along
We’ll get to the end of it
If I stay strong -
You’ll wave ‘till I get to the bend in the road
I’ll wave ‘till I come to the end
(So sing me the sad song)

Don’t Look Down (Don't Slow Up)
down, down, down, down...
Don’t look down
You can see all you want from here
Don’t look down
It’s just your feet and a can of fear
And if you fall...
The water’s warmer on the far side of the bay
Don’t slow up
The world will never let you get off
Don’t slow up
It's just a spin on a fairground ride
And if you do...
The circus moves on to another little town
[Spoken]: “Run, rabbit run. Just keep on running, you don't have time to look back and see if everyone else is coming…”
Don't look down
[Trumpet cadenza]
Don’t cry out
Do you think you’ll just disappear?
And when you cry
The lights are going to shine so brightly on your face
Don’t look down
You can see all you need from right here
Don't slow up
They won't let you hide away for a day...
Don't look down
You can see all you want to hear
And if you do
The world will never let you get away again
Don’t look down
Don't look down
You can see all you need from right here
Don’t slow up
They won’t let you hide away for a day
Don’t look down
Don’t slow up
Don’t cry out

Looking For Cannonballs
I'm looking for the cannonballs that roll around my head
Castellations, new inventions, built around my bed
Fields of yore and porridge poured, whilst days of gold I tread
Wondrous words of mystery in magic castles said
Save me-hee, from looking inside
Stare at a gentleman
Stop me-hee, from seeking and hide
Me by my riverside
Draw the bridge and raise the flags, the forest’s on the move
Portcullises and ramparts built, they shoe the horse’s hooves
Shields of honour, swords of peace are added to the fire
The Fahrenheit of 451 is written in the mire
Save me-hee, from looking inside,
Stare at a gentleman
Stop me-hee, from seeking and hide
Me by my conker tree
Save me-hee, from looking inside
Stare at the Englishman
Stop me-hee, from seeking and hide
Me by my riverside
More than ‘chival’, less than ‘rous’ is all we can afford
Eat our potatoes, praise the Lord, and bang upon your gourd
Witches brew, now voodoo too, in village foolish grins
Invocations, susurrations, spilling down their chins
Chainmails and cyber tax, mantraps from distant lands
Change is passing faster than the sea removes our sands
Save me-hee, from looking inside,
Stare at a gentleman
Stop me-hee, from seeking and hide
Me by my conker tree
Save me-hee, from looking inside
Stare at the Englishman
Stop me-hee, from seeking and hide
Me by my riverside
Loo, ooh, ooh-ooh, looking inside
Looking for cannonballs
Spoken: I'm looking for, the cannonballs, that roll around my head...

I'm looking for the cannonballs that roll around my head
Castellations, new inventions, built around my bed
Fields of yore and porridge poured, whilst days of gold I tread
Wondrous words of mystery in magic castles said
Save me-hee, from looking inside
Stare at a gentleman
Stop me-hee, from seeking and hide
Me by my riverside
Draw the bridge and raise the flags, the forest’s on the move
Portcullises and ramparts built, they shoe the horse’s hooves
Shields of honour, swords of peace are added to the fire
The Fahrenheit of 451 is written in the mire
Save me-hee, from looking inside,
Stare at a gentleman
Stop me-hee, from seeking and hide
Me by my conker tree

Part I
OK man, you hear me, yeh?

Don't let 'em tell you anything man

Anything!

All you've gotta do is look for Christ's sake

It's madness

Don't believe a word

I'm not paranoid man!
Stick with me!

Yeah…
Yeah, I'll get you out of this
Do you wanna know what really happened?

You know at first you don't notice…

But it affected everybody
Hey that's mine! Put it back!

If you want something, ask.

That's how this started…
(New National Anthem)
I'm f*cking lost...
All you've gotta do is look for Christ's sake

It's madness

Don't believe a word

I'm not paranoid man!
(New National Anthem)
You know at first you don't notice…

But it affected everybody
If you want something, ask.

That's how this started…
Part II
You gotta forget all that
All that’s gone man
Floating
High above the cities
Shines a lonely ray of truth
And screaming
High above the cities
Sings a lonely photobooth
(Gone in a flash)
Face up
It's only you that matters
Or have you lost that with your youth?
(Solo, New National Anthem)
You gotta forget all that
All that’s gone man
I’m f*cking lost!
It's only you that matters
That’s how this started
You gotta forget all that
All that’s gone man…

Write A Song About It - Video link: youtu.be/3fbwXZqaOOM
I looked out the window
It was the same as yesterday
I had a feeling
It was the same as yesterday
The news doesn’t cheer me up, and the wind is turning cold
It looks like some more good men, are going to fold
Our faith is leaving us and no-one seems to care
Belief is rationed now; it’s a meagre fare
And what are we gonna do about it?
I’m gonna write a song about it tomorrow
And what are we gonna do about it?
I’m gonna write a song about it
Tomorrow
I played guitar all night
Just the same as yesterday
I turned up the amp real loud
But no-one came (to say 'turn that down!')
Things have got tough around here and the rain may never stop
All the fishing’s gone to hell; so has the crop
The town’s full of strangers, I don’t recognise the place
All our friends have moved away; I guess we missed the race
And what are we gonna do about it?
I’m gonna write a song about it tomorrow
I took a drive around town
The same as yesterday
Had way too much to drink last night
Just the same as today
I’m not getting older, just colder in the heart
I'm not getting wiser anymore, I just don’t take part
The world is changing and there's not much space for me
I could build a rocketship, maybe that’s the place to be
And what am I gonna do about it?
I’m gonna write a song about it tomorrow

So why did you think I loved you?
And why did you think I’d miss you?
And why? I don’t even call you?
And why?
‘Cos I’m over it.
I ain't got time to write a love song for you
Girl I ain't even missing you
I ain't got a flame for you to burn no bundle of love letters from me
Yeah, you just keep ‘em now
I gotta go, get on the road and get away
I never did like that town
So why did you think I loved you?
And why did you think I’d miss you?
And why? I don’t even call you?
And why?
‘Cos I’m over it.
I had a coin that used to rub a hole in my jeans, oh till I spent it on you
Only got the hole left now
I had friends that I didn’t see when we went out
Yeah we never went out
I can't afford to keep thinking these things about you
Yeah we weren’t the greatest thing girl
So why did you think I loved you?
And why did you think I’d miss you?
So why? 'Cos I don’t even call you?
And why?
‘Cos I’m over it
...Why?

And why?
‘Cos I’m over it
...Why?

The book of love is long and boring, no-one can lift the damn thing
It’s full of charts and facts and figures and instructions for dancing
But I...
I love it when you read to me
And you...
You can read me anything
The book of love has music in it, in fact that’s where music comes from
Some of it’s just transcendental; some of it’s just really dumb
But I...
I love it when you sing to me
And you...
You can sing me anything
The book of love is long and boring and written very long ago
It’s full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes and things we’re all too young to know
But I...
I love it when you give me things
And you...
You ought to give me wedding rings
And I...
I love it when you give me things
And you...
You ought to give me wedding rings
You ought to give me wedding rings

I like Best - featuring Clare Milne

A song I wrote for Clare Milne to sing - from the 70's. The redoubtable Rick Medlock on skins, produced by the infamous John Rivers of Woodbine Street Studios, Royal Leamington Spa. (That's us in the picture for this track. I presume Sir Horace Gentleman (The Specials - Clare's other half) played bass on this and Horace says that Bob Jackson (Badfinger) played keyboards on it.
My publisher forwarded this to Toni Basil to use as her follow up single to "Mickey". I believe a demo was recorded, (I never got a copy) but she was unfortunately distracted by being asked to choreograph for Bowie. Well you would wouldn't you!
I Like Best
I waited in the café on the corner of the street just like you said
We measured time in coffee cups until we knew the world had gone to bed
I really liked the hot car ride and I could grow to like a one-track mind
Don’t need to be a doctor to make a house call
Take me back to my place
‘Cos that’s the bit that I like
Take me back to my place
‘Cos that’s the bit that
I like best
I like best
I like best
I like best
People say that you and I go further than we used to go before
They pick up all the rubbish and they lay it down outside their own front doors
I’d like to give them the time of day but whenever I look they’re not looking my way
Give me the password and promise not to change
Chorus
Saturday was not the place to run away to when we heard the bells
Now its quiet on the corners and we’re one of many others in our cells
We used to be the time and place; we were so sure of winning
I’ve re-done the bathroom, there’s a lot more space so
Chorus

The Man In The Moon
Girl I watch you sleep each night
Shine through your window
When there's no clouds in sight
I send shooting stars, so bright
When you look up to make your wish
I can see your face by their light
I don't wanna be the man in the moon
After all your midnight parties you kiss
All your friends their sweet goodnights
I smile down for you like a fool
If you feel someone's been watching you
And everything starts to go right
I moved your stars for you last night
I don't wanna be the man the moon
Why does the sunrise come so early
And turn your face away from mine
Oh please look up
Look up
Look up
I don't wanna be the man in the moon

The Man In The Moon
Girl I watch you sleep each night
Shine through your window
When there's no clouds in sight
I send shooting stars, so bright
When you look up to make your wish
I can see your face by their light
I don't wanna be the man in the moon
After all your midnight parties you kiss
All your friends their sweet goodnights
I smile down for you like a fool
If you feel someone's been watching you
And everything starts to go right
I moved your stars for you last night
I don't wanna be the man the moon
Why does the sunrise come so early
And turn your face away from mine
Oh please look up
Look up
Look up
I don't wanna be the man in the moon

LET GO (Never)
She was standing by the side of the road, I watched for a while
She turned around and we smiled
I walked across as if the traffic wasn’t there
Just as if, the traffic wasn’t there
Never knew each other, never knew each other
But it was different, it was close up and fast
And when it was good it was good
And when it was; what we said we’d do...
We said; we’d never let go, never, never let go
Hold hands and we’ll never let go, never let go
We’ll never, never let go
Then it was.
Telling it like it was, was never the point of view
Telling it the way, the way you always do
Telling it like it was, no-one would ever know
Wondering where we’d go, but we’d never let go
She was from the side, the other side
Never knew her father, never knew her mother, never knew her father, never knew her mother
So we walked through the traffic, slabs of metal like they were never there
Passed through us, and we never let go, so we walked through the traffic, slabs of metal, but we never
Let go
Telling it like it was, was never the point of view
Telling it the way, the way you always do
Telling it like it was, no-one would ever know
Wondering where we’d go, but we’d never let go
Never knew her father, never knew her mother, never knew her father, never knew her mother
Never knew her father, never knew her mother, never knew her father, never knew her mother
Never knew her mother
But we’d never, we’d never, never, we said we’d never let go
LET GO

Only This One Last Time…
I’m looking in my pocket
And it’s emptier than my soul
I was wondering what to do with what is left of me
‘Cos Red Rooster’s crow has flown away
There was an Ace of Spades and a Queen of Hearts
And I was thinking ‘bout which’ll go
Staring at the dealer and feeling kind of numb
I’m beginning to suck and blow
There’s a fight coming at my face right now
I’m already falling off my stool
Gotta hit the floor just right and then
I’m running like a fool
I ‘m heading to the midnight crossroads with a broken voodoo spell
Sent my soul off in a bottle, and gave my dreams to a wishing well
Gotta give them up now and float downstream for
Just one more time, only this one last time, one last time
I was wondering how to get out of the place fast
Through a window or a door
Get it wrong and I’m down, really down
In pieces on the floor
A bullet just went past my head
I’m just guessing which way to jump
If I stop now I’m dead but at least I
Won’t have to suck for breath no more
There’s a car nearly spun me round out here
I can’t see which way to jump for dust
Getting it wrong is gonna do for me
If I stagger now I’m bust
Making love to my woman
Wondering which name to call
Don’t want to get it wrong this time
Don’t want to get it wrong at all
Waking up in a strange place
I don’t know what to say
I am not sure what really happened
But they say I have to pay
Trouble is hiding behind the tree that I am hanging from
I got one last dance in this stinking breeze
I guess I got it wrong one last time

Featuring the inspirational #soundcloud.com/ray-mcginnis on slap bass. Brilliant stuff. Check out where the salt crystal radioactive inspiration comes from here (amazing!): lanl.gov/newsroom/publications...s/tru-waste.pdf AND please put a comment about his bass playing via this link: soundcloud.com/ray-mcginnis/sa...al-vietnam-phil
Ray volunteered to add slap to my embryonic demo 'Mama Please Make Me Funky' track and I bit his hand off. Luckily he could still play. Collaboration; it's cooler than an orange and a pink sugar mouse in a large sock. Once Ray sent his bass line over I was inspired to add the funky rhythm guitar. You have to walk a Nile (Rodgers) in another man's shoes… then it was a 9/4 dance number (!) that just needed some vocals and no-one was looking, I was all alone…

You have to walk a Nile (Rodgers) in another man's shoes… then it was a 9/4 dance number (!) that just needed some vocals and no-one was looking, I was all alone…</itunes:summary>

I Could Be Shouting - ft Phil McWalter - Single Released

This is my original song that I subsequently sent to Wheelwright to add his voice to. That collab resulted in his wonderful "Shouting On My Own" version soundcloud.com/phil-mcwalter/s...own-wheelwright. As you will hear there are differences in approach, content and arrangement. Please enjoy both!
Big thanks again to: The Sporz, Ivory League, Ray McGinnis and Deeply Dazzled for their feedback on the embryonic mixes.
I Could Be Shouting [14M]
I went out
Into the garden
In my dressing gown
I worry about the world getting busy
With unimportant things
Look
I look at the sun coming up
I look at the world sinking down
Listen to the blackbird; go off like a gun
My feet are very cold and wet now
I could be shouting
On my own
I can’t hear anyone else at all
Shouting
I'm on my own
Don't tell your children to hush don't make a sound
Ask them to stand in the rivers and chase the fish around
I hope the planet and nature is left for them to call Mother
I’m sending out my siren fears one way or another
Am I a messenger pigeon with an airgun pellet in its wing
For a distracted world that only worships shiny things
Do I write on the wall that no-one is going to see or read
The pretty pictures on uchewb are all that they need
Am I shouting on my own?
Am I shouting?
I could be shouting
On my own
I can’t hear anyone else at all
I should be shouting
I'm on my own
Sometimes
I bang my head
When I get into a car
I am not as flexible as I once was
Can’t bend what is wrong into right
I could be dancing on my own
I can’t see anyone else at all
I could be dancing
I’m on my own
I could be shouting
On my own
I can’t hear anyone else at all
I should be shouting
I'm on my own
On my own...

Battery Walkman (old cassette) to digital... Sorry about the quality of the tape hiss!
Five Tough Men was the band:

Mark Yakes - Bass
Rick Medlock - Drums
Phil McWalter - Guitars and vocals
I don't think I liked celebrity much then either! It was well before the cult of Cowell but you get the idea...</itunes:summary>

Empty Shell (Twisted Feeling) © Phil McWalter
I was thinking of someone real
Holds me to the ground
Listen to the sound
Empty shell
As time is time save mine
Nervous triggered hands
Distant ringing bell
In my hell
Hell - I’m walking on the sand
Empty shell
Hell - I’m falling lost in sand
Burning hell
Tiny hands children scream
Tiny hands around my life
Ringing bell sinking dream
Hear my children scream
Someone real someone fell
In this sinking dream
Empty sands empty shell
Empty
Someone real holds me down
Hear the sound watch me drown
On the sand burning hell
Nervous hands empty shell

The talky bit in the middle was actually taken from a Civil Defence instructional leaflet! "Remember statistically it is not likely to be you" is a little chilling isn't it!

She's Not Crying Because She's A Girl (Ver: 8-M)
The child in the sparkly dress

She thought she was looking her best

The wedding is over, the grown-ups all dancing

But she’s gone and hidden away, so she won’t have to say... yeah
She’s not crying because she’s a girl

She’s crying 'coz this is the real world

And when you start to see how it works

Yeh that’s when it hurts, yeah
She’s not crying because she’s a girl

She’s just trying to live in the real world

When you get to see how it works

Yeh that’s when it hurts, yeah
You think she’s weak

But then you say that showing your feelings

Always means that you’re strong

But you’re wrong…
The child in the sparkly dress

She thought she was looking her best

The wedding is over, the grown-ups all dancing

But she’s gone and hidden away, so she won’t have to say... yeah
She’s not crying because she’s a girl

She’s just trying to live in the real world

When you get to see how it works

That’s when it hurts, yeah
She’s not crying because she’s a girl

She’s crying 'coz this is the real world

And when you start to see how it works

That’s when it hurts…

Spellbound
I can see all of you
Inside my head
The ones that look shiny
The ones still in bed
You shout at your cell phones
Talk in your sleep
You sit in the cafés
Wait in the street
Let us walk quickly now
Come on, let us run
Get caught in a shower
Stretch out in the sun
I was spellbound
I was amazed
Simply spellbound, spellbound
I can see all of you
The ones that look shiny
The ones that look dead
Fish for the big one
Dream of a win
Look for the answers
Eat out of a bin
I was spellbound
I was amazed
Simply spellbound, spellbound
I can see all of you
Take a hike through the mountains
See your baby born
Play your music too loud
Hide in the corn
Is it a small loan
Or is it too much to lend?
You all know for certain
How it will end
So stack up the building blocks
And start a fire with sticks
We all like some magic
But do you see all the tricks?
I can see all of you
Inside my head
The ones that look shiny
The ones that look back
I can see all of you
Simply spellbound

Simply spellbound, spellbound...
Walk in the forests
At dusk or at dawn
Eat a sandwich
Mow the lawn
Is it the beginning
Or is it the the end
You’re never truly certain
What's round the bend
Sweep up the leaves
Or just kick through the piles
You all get something
We all like a smile
I can see all of you
Inside my head
The ones that look shiny
The ones that look dead
Take a smell of the ocean
Talk to the trees
Smell the coffee
Make big concrete bees
Look in the churches
Get muddy knees
Sniff the winds of change
Feel the breeze
Fish for the big one
Dream of a win
Look for the answers
Eat out of a bin

I wrote a song. Completed a recording of it myself, then imagined Wheelwright's golden timbre'd voice and decided to ask politely if he might employ it on this track. He agreed. I said get as creative as you want. He swapped some words around and sent me some quite wonderful vocals and sound effects. He also made inspirational suggestions and I think we incorporated all of them! ;-)
Here we have the collaborative result which is sufficiently different from my original song to be regarded as a stand-alone McWalter-Wheelwright composition. I learned so much from working with Wheelwright and am so grateful that he found time to give to this project. The man is well cool and so very talented. I know this might make him blush and slightly cross but listen to him, he is amazing ;-)) soundcloud.com/wheelwright

Shouting On My Own [6M]
Sound of distant thunder
Lightning so far away
Storm will surely come but
It’s so still here
Drawn into the night
Strayed so far from home
Between two worlds
To face this storm
In my dressing gown
I could be shouting on my own
I can’t hear anyone else at all, yeah
Shouting
On my own
Don’t you tell your children, hush don’t make a sound
They should be swimming in the rivers
They should chase the fish around
I could be shouting
on my own

On my own
I should be shouting

Sound of distant thunder
I’m soaked through to the bone
Woken by the bird song
Feels so alive, feels so alone
I could be shouting on my own
I can’t hear anyone else at all
Shouting
On my own
I could be shouting on my own
I can’t hear anyone else at all
Shouting
On my own
Sometimes
I bang my head

When I get into the car

I am not as flexible as I once was
Can’t bend what is wrong into what is right

The Tempest - Shakespeare's last play c.1610-11
Be not afeard. The isle is full of noises,
Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices
That, if I then had waked after long sleep
Will make me sleep again; and then in dreaming
The clouds methought would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me, that when I waked
I cried to dream again (III.ii.130–138).
