This is another volume of the series "The Art of Jembe Drumming – The Mali Tradition," which all feature duet recordings: one jembe plus one dundun (kònkònin). The players are Isa Coulibaly (jembe) and Madu Jakite (Dundun). All tracks are of one recording session which lasted about one and a half hours. As was the case with the earlier volumes (Mali Tradition 1 and 2), no rehearsals nor even discussion about the style or repertoire preceded the playing. The jembe player started to play, and off they went. Recording: Rainer Polak, Kati (Mali) 2012. Master: Puma Hoberg
Isa Coulibaly is a respected professional drummer from the town of Kati, some 15km to the north of Bamako. He is a former student of Namori Keit from Mali, some recordings of whom make part of the audio samples that accompany my book (see rainerpolak.de/publications). His improvisatory playing is quite creative, full of surprise and expressivity.
