I work at a tree museum
So nice to be among like-minded
Nature-noticing humans.
Rolling into the research lot
One morning on my two-wheeler
I saw the cracked shell
Of a sparkling turtle stopped in its tracks
By employee traffic.
Eyes still open, dying in place
But I couldn’t stop
Because there was a pick-up truck
Coming fast: work to do.
Later someone had scraped it up
Tossed it aside, away with poor taste
I wear a turtle pendant
Absentee vote for Turtle Island
Every day on my bike
I, like the turtles,
Wait patiently, confidently,
For the end of the oil era.

Jenny McBride – And I Was There
Once there was a planet
With water and sky blue
Clouds were white
With snow on the mountains
Jungles green
When every color flew by as bird
Swam through as fish
A planet breathing in a million shapes
And I was there
Seasons came and changed
Followed weather’s beaten path
Warmed in spring till flowers burst
Open for the bees
Summer fed mosquitoes and goldenrods
Autumn got trees ready for bed
And winter blanketed the sleep
Where snowshoe hares dimpled silence
A planet enraptured by its seasons
And I was there
Water ran past in rivers
Thundered in serious play with waterfalls
Hid turtles in creeks
Backed up huge and deep in lakes
Held down oceans for whales
Fell in tiny drops from all over the sky
Bubbled from the ground in clear, cool springs
Water fed the million shapes of life
And I was there
Trees blended into squirrel
And I was there
Plants gave of food
To feed the lowly who fed the next
Who raised a family
And I was there
The stars looked down, lonely
The sky danced its prettiest blue
Angels came as butterflies
It’s hard to describe
Just lucky
I was there

Grey mud from Headwaters
Frosts my shoelace
What's it doing there?
It should be
Deep under the redwood's roots
Holding the water in
Holding the moisture I saw
Daubed in nestled clouds on the valleys
Nestled like snuggled blankets
Wrapping what's left of the gentle forests.
Mud from Headwaters
Clings to the pattern in my shoes.
What's it doing there?
The old logging road
Silty green like the Yukon River
Was not so muddy as I imagined.
They need the rain winter hasn't brought.
For two hours we hiked
Through devastation, huge and ancient stumps
Ringed by teasel, pampas,
A host of Eurasian invasion scourge
That roads bring
To deplete.
Mud from Headwaters splattered on my jeans
Did not come from the forest
But from the road that cut it.
Exposed, I carry it home to show
How deep the damage runs.

Grey mud from Headwaters
Frosts my shoelace
What's it doing there?
It should be
Deep under the redwood's roots
Holding the water in
Holding the moisture I saw
Daubed in nestled clouds on the valleys
Nestled like snuggled blankets
Wrapping what's left of the gentle forests.
Mud from Headwaters
Clings to the pattern in my shoes.
What's it doing there?
The old logging road
Silty green like the Yukon River
Was not so muddy as I imagined.
They need the rain winter hasn't brought.
For two hours we hiked
Through devastation, huge and ancient stumps
Ringed by teasel, pampas,
A host of Eurasian invasion scourge
That roads bring
To deplete.
Mud from Headwaters splattered on my jeans
Did not come from the forest
But from the road that cut it.
Exposed, I carry it home to show
How deep the damage runs.

You call them roads
I call them
Aisles where the dead sleep,
You call it independent freedom
I call it a casualty.
Oil and concrete
Pack quite a punch
Will quench the food chain.
Fur matted into blood bone absence
The green roadsides are emptying,
Aisles where the dead sleep
Take us from driveway to driveway.
