Bobby & The Xennials: 90 Minutes in 1990

1990. At the birth of the decade, less than one percent of the world had the internet, mobile phones were for the rich and digital radios didn't exist. We had four TV channels in the UK - the only other stream was the FM dial. But there was an air of excitement - change was ahead. Mandela was free. Thatcher had resigned. Kiss FM was no longer a pirate. Yoof TV was born. People were raving. It was a hot, hot Summer.
This is a 90 minute visit to 1990, with 70 tracks that were hitting the charts and hitting the clubs. Commercial hip hop, dance music and indie labels totally dominated both. Things got bleepier and moodier. Soul music was also evolving with the growth of New Jack Swing on one side, and Acid Jazz on the other. As I entered my early teens, this was a really fun time for music. Also, everyone used the same three breaks and no-one cared. It was mostly about raps and raving. So, for the next 90, rave on!...

Part two.

90 tracks from 1990 (almost) that were hitting the charts and hitting the clubs.
Commercial hip hop, dance music and indie labels totally dominated both. Rave music was exploding, New Jack Swing & jazzy boom bap hip hop was fully forming. Alternative rock was blossoming with strains of shoegaze and grunge. Also, everyone still used the same three breaks and no-one cared. The Funky Drummer beat was another that dominated.
It was a knockout year. So much so, Mike Tyson took his first k/o.

A pretty amazing year for music imho. It was the release of a number of truly groundbreaking albums. Dance music still dominated the charts with chirpy house anthems whilst the underground rave scene continued to explode and crossover. Hip hop’s commercial stature had stepped up too, whilst jazz-lead boom bap dominated during the midst of the “golden era”. The stature of alternative rock was back in the spotlight as indie, shoegaze and grunge came to chart prominence. Soul was split between the re-emergence of jazz-funk bands in the acid jazz scene in the UK and new jack swing continued to dominate in the US. The world was going through it’s own changes at the end of the Soviet Union and the beginning of the Gulf War, whilst the dawn of the internet was upon us. Despite the usual politricks, this was sonically a very cool and exciting time; there were still the pop sensibilities but mostly things got deep, moody and explorative.. Or maybe that was my state of mind as an emo-full teenager approaching the end of my school years.

The second mix of music from 1991. 75 tracks over 90 minutes. I’m gonna be real - my tastes were diverting massively at this point. The charts were full of rap, rave and rock, and in my mid-teens I was digging deeper in those worlds away from the chart selection. Pop music was mostly really bad tbh. But as club & rave culture evolved, the underground had become overground. In the UK if you knew someone with a satellite dish you could suddenly watch Yo MTV Raps and stuff. I was sneaking into 15 and 18 rated movies. This is kinda like a channel hop through late night weekend TV, binging VHS tapes of Top Of The Pops, alternative radio, several film soundtracks and one of those weird compilations called “Rave Fever” that would also weirdly include Simply Red. You could say this is several mixtapes in one, but it’s definitely at least two.

Bobby & The Xennials: September 24th 1991

30 years ago this week saw arguably one of the most significant album release days in music history, with several albums that would go on to define and inspire large swathes of music & culture across the 90s, & influence to this day. So, here are 45 tracks that hit stereos on September 24th 1991. Four bonafide classics.
Nirvana's 'Nevermind' brought grunge to the pop charts, and was an antidote to the glitzy misogynistic hair metal that was dominating. Raspy fuzzy alternative rock with a punk attitude, from a Seattle-based band consisting of Kris Novoselic, Dave Grohl and one Kurt Cobain. Produced by Butch Vig at the infamous Sound City, this still rocks harder than most stuff. I wasn't much of a fan of rock music at the time, but this album is the one changed that for me. I absolutely reeked of teen spirit.
A Tribe Called Quest's 'Low End Theory' changed hip hop. Like Nirvana, Q Tip paid no mind to the supposed sophomore album jinx, instead levelling up on their debut and cementing the fusion of jazz and hip hop (along with artists like Gang Starr) which defined the 'golden era' of rap music, even cited as the direct inspiration for Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic'. Like the title suggests, this one's all about the low end, be it Ron Carter's bass lines, or Bob Power's studio genius. Ali Shaheed Muhammad handled the cuts, and we all learned how much of a beast Phife is on the mic.
Red Hot Chilli Pepper's 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' fused funk, punk, alternative rock and hip hop. A gang of batshit horny Angelenos with swagger for days. Recorded in the former (supposedly haunted) mansion of Harry Houdini, this had Rick Rubin on the boards, and is the project that took Anthony Kiedis, John Frusciante and Flea to global notoriety. Slap bass and smut isn't for everyone, but I fucking loved this album.
Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica' album was technically released on 23rd September, but you're gonna have to allow it. Winner of the first Mercury Prize, this album was a hallucinogenic trip that married the worlds of psychedelic indie shoegaze with acid house and club culture. Each Xennial's mix features a Bobby - in this case, it's Bobby Gillespie, along with Andrew Innes, Martin Duffy and the late Rob "Throb" Young. The album was produced by the governor Andrew Weatherall, and featured prominent guest vocals from the wonderful Denise Johnson - two people that are personally very much missed. This mix is dedicated to them both.

Ok, we’ve reached 1992. 123 tracks over 3 hours.
This is possibly my favourite year in music. The year I left school. I DJed for the first time in public at a house party that Summer, started college and started sneaking into nightclubs. A massive one for me.
The start of the nineties saw some sub-genres established; by ’92 some of these sounds had fully-formed and even crossed over. Hip hop was bang in the middle of its "golden era" and new jack swing was in its prime. The breaks in rave music were speeding up, the birth of jungle was imminent. The grubbier alternative rock world was wiping out the hairspray metal bands; indie and grunge were becoming mainstream. There was even a surge of dancehall in the pop charts.
The first two hours go through hip hop, swing, soul, acid jazz, ragga, indie, metal & pop.
The last hour is a rave-up (largely based at the UK's biggest illegal rave...) with a few curveballs and some grungy ballads for the post-rave comedown.

So, ngl, this mix was troublesome. The whole thing was done, finished, months ago, then I spilt tea on my laptop as I was gonna export it. One fried computer. No more mix. Then I had to move. So there's been a lot of obstacles, technically & mentally, to do this all over again. But, out of principle, I fucking have!!
1992 is my fave year in music so this is self-indulgent as fuck. The summer I left school, started drinking, dancing & deejaying in public. My vinyl habit was in full effect. Hip hop particularly. So there's a lot of that here. Hip hop album tracks aplenty, but there's lots of other stuff from 1992 too. A bunch of new jack swing & dancehall tracks, a couple stoner rock & indie bangers, some house & rave classics, some metal & pop icons, a few film, TV & radio bits, and words from Bill Hicks.
You'll need two C90s for this one.
Think of it as a Zack Snyder supercut, or sum'n.
3 hours+, about 150 tracks from '92.
Love to my Xennials.

Bobby & The Xennials: '93 Til Infinity | Part 1

The first of two mixes of music released in 1993. This was nearly a 4.5 hour mix but I decided to spare you literally listening to 93 til infinity, and split it in half (Pt 2 will continue where Pt 1 finishes off, in solid sequel style).
The first part concentrates largely on the golden era Hip Hop output of the year, but in Xennials fashion also includes a smattering of indie, grunge, pop, ragga, soundtracks, new jack swing (around the point where the sub-genre had hit its commercial peak) and the introduction of jungle, born out of the hardcore rave scene.
Part two will incorporate more of the above, but with a heavier emphasis on house, techno and commercial club music.
For now, here's 110+ tracks over 2.5 hours, from Blur to Wu, with assorted film clips from the year, and a bit of Mortal Kombat.
WARNING: 1993 was a pretty aggy sweary stoner year sonically, so be warned if there are little ears around!
This is how we chill...

<itunes:summary>The first of two mixes of music released in 1993.

Bobby & The Xennials: 1996 Part 1

A couple years back, I was feeling jaded about this DJ thing. So I turned my midlife crisis into a mixtape and started this Xennials series, with music from my 80s childhood, to remind myself of the music I first fell in love with. When I hit the 90s, I decided to go a bit more in depth, year for year, two annuals for each, touching on all the genres I used to listen to.
So to 1996 then, the year I turned 20 and left my hometown to pursue my dreams (lol).
Director's Cut length again - this is 3.5 hours containing 110 tracks from 1996.
A healthy dose of Hip Hop and R&B, with touches of Jungle and D&B, Indie & Alternative Rock, Breakbeat, Trip Hop and Pop sprinkled throughout, whilst the last hour concentrates mainly on House, Garage & Techno.
Aaliyah to Beck, Blackstreet to Daft Punk, DJ Shadow to DJ Zinc, Spice Girls to The Prodigy.
The Fugees & The Roots. Jay Z & Nas. De La & Tribe. Pac & Biggie. In the mix, 1996.
The second and FINAL volume, coming soon x

A May Day Monday Mixtape for ya.
This is the 2nd volume of mixes of music from 1996.
3 hours, 110 tracks. The FINAL in the 90s Xennial series (for now).
The first half is Hip Hop, R&B, Jungle and Beats.
The second part is House, Techno, Breakbeat and Indie anthems.
The last part is more chilled classics, across genres.
Curveballs, samples and pop records sprinkled throughout, obviously.
Artwork features actual Bobby in actual 1996 with a few actual Xennials. What a bunch of hippies.
This was the year I turned 20, started having adulthood reality checks (lol) and ended the year leaving my home town with the aim of pursuing this music thing more seriously.
So this feels a good place for me to pause the 90s Xennials series.
I've hit my personal remit for now. Self-imposed brief accomplished. I may well come back to 97-99 another day. It may even be time to revisit the 80s again.. There's unfinished business..
For now though, one more extended nineties rave up. Tuck in x
