Cover of The Beatles' classic track.
Sir Paul used a unique pluck/single-finger strum on his original tune. I couldn't get any consistency with that technique, so I had to work out a plucking pattern that fit my own playing style. We can't all be Paul McCartney.
He also managed to completely avoid the D (middle) string throughout the entire song, like it was the third rail. I wound up embracing it, because I thought it was sonically interesting.
Words & Lyrics by John Lennon/Paul McCartney
Arr. by C. Jackson
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

*If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you
If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do, once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go through time with
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty, except for the memory of how
They were answered by you
But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do, once you find them

Music & Lyrics by Jim Croce
Arr. by C. Jackson
Once we were lovers
But somehow things have changed
Now we're just lonely people
Trying to forget each other's names
Now we're just lonely people
Trying to forget each other's names
What came between us?
Maybe we were just too young to know
But now and then
I feel the same,
And sometimes at night I think
I hear you calling my name
Mm, mm, mm, these dreams
They keep me going these days
Once we were lovers
But that was long ago
We lived together then
And now we do not even say hello
We lived together then
And now we do not even say hello
What came between us?
Maybe we were just too young to know
But now and then
I feel the same,
And sometimes at night I think

*Things were spinnin' 'round me
And all my thoughts were cloudy
And I had begun to doubt all the things that were me
Been in so many places, you know I've run so many races
I looked into the empty faces of the people of the night
Somethin' is just not right
'Cause I know that I've gotta get outta here
I'm so alone
Don't you know that I gotta get outta here
'Cause New York's not my home
Though all the streets are crowded
There's somethin' strange about it
I lived there 'bout a year and I never once felt at home
I thought I'd make the big time
I learned a lot of lessons awfully quick
And now I'm tellin' you that they were not the nice kind
It has been so long since I have felt fine
That's the reason that I've gotta get outta here
I'm so alone

*Things were spinnin' 'round me
And all my thoughts were cloudy
And I had begun to doubt all the things that were me
Been in so many places, you know I've run so many races
I looked into the empty faces of the people of the night
Somethin' is just not right
'Cause I know that I've gotta get outta here
I'm so alone
Don't you know that I gotta get outta here
'Cause New York's not my home
Though all the streets are crowded
There's somethin' strange about it
I lived there 'bout a year and I never once felt at home
I thought I'd make the big time
I learned a lot of lessons awfully quick
And now I'm tellin' you that they were not the nice kind
It has been so long since I have felt fine
That's the reason that I've gotta get outta here
I'm so alone
Don't you know that I gotta get outta here

I know this is a controversial song, but no more so than any other secular tune. May it be understood: this is NOT a worship song, and I am not including it as such.
But there's something about this song. I firmly believe that when Cohen sat down to write this, something was crying out in his own brokeness and reaching toward God. Unfortunately, he just kept on writting, adding some 80-plus verses, each one getting wierder, moving further and further away from a cry for forgiveness, and closer to his own worldly justification.
I've chosen the verses that, to me, hew closer to what we most identify with when we hear this sung, even if we don't fully understand who we're singing to.
Words & Lyrics by Leonard Cohen

*I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to the kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Baby, I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Well, maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot some(one) who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not some(one) who has seen the Light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

*Imagine that I’m a stranger
And I’ll imagine it’s been a dream
And we never saw each other before
in our lives
Imagine that we’re not lovers
We never whispered those first few words
And as time went on we never
forgot what to say
And I am glad
I don’t know who you are
And I am glad
I don’t know who you are
Living together was painful
And breaking up, the same
But as time went on we saw through
each other’s disguise
So imagine that it’s been a daydream
We never heard each other say
I’ll always love you
And you will always love me
And I am glad
I don’t know who you are
And I am glad
I don’t know who you are
When images start to unravel
When first impressions begin to fade
Promises made like tales told
can sometimes be lies
If you imagine that I’m a stranger
Then nothing promised is nothing tried
Then I’ll be glad
I don’t know who you are
Then I’ll be glad
I don’t know who you are
And I am glad
I don’t know who you are*

*Well, I know it's kind of late
I hope I didn't wake you
But what I’ve got to say can't wait
I hope you’ll understand me
Every time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song
Yes, I know it's kind of strange
But every time I'm near you
I just run out of things to say
I know you'll understand me
Every time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song
Every time the time was right
All the words just came out wrong
So I'll have to say I love you in a song
Yes, I know it's kind of late
I hope I didn't wake you
But there's something that I’ve just got to say
I hope you’ll understand me

*I guess that it was bound to happen
Was just a matter of time
Now I've come to my decision
And it's a one of those painful kind
'Cause it seems that you wanted a martyr
Just a regular guy wouldn't do
But baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you
You really got to hand it to you
Girl, you really tried
But for every time that we spent laughing
There were two times that I cried
‘Cause you were tryin' to make me your martyr
And that's one thing I just couldn't do
'Cause baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you
Tables are meant for turning
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burning
When the people and memories
They join aren't the same
Still I hope that you can find another
Who can take what I could not
He'll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
'Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain't 'bout to start nothin' new
And baby, I can't hang upon no lover's cross for you

This is a song I wrote for my first girlfriend back in Tennessee. (Hi, Myra!) It was way too sophisticated for my maturity level, so I must have been listening to a bunch of Jazz influences then; although, I don't seem to remember it being so jazz-infused at the time. I think I may have added that feel after I eventually dropped the lyrics and just played it as an instrumental solo.
I'm hereby reintroducing the lyrics version with this release.
Music & lyrics: Clay Jackson
*Giving my hugs to you
Darling’s all I can do
Saving my hugs for you
Since the time that I
finally realized I just can’t say no
Giving my hugs to you
When I say I love you
Know I mean it is not
Just an excuse
To hug and to kiss you, so
Please don’t forget me
When I go away, I’ll be
Saving my hugs for you
If you could only see how I feel now
If you could only read my mind
You would know my feelings inside out
Then you would know that I am just
Hopelessly lost without you beside me
I’ll never be the same
If someone asks me, I’ll just have to say
That I’m giving my hugs to you

<itunes:summary>This is a song I wrote for my first girlfriend back in Tennessee. (Hi, Myra!) It was way too sophisticated for my maturity level, so I must have been listening to a bunch of Jazz influences then; although, I don't seem to remember it being so jazz-infused at the time. I think I may have added that feel after I eventually dropped the lyrics and just played it as an instrumental solo.
I'm hereby reintroducing the lyrics version with this release.
Music & lyrics: Clay Jackson
*Giving my hugs to you
Darling’s all I can do
Saving my hugs for you
Since the time that I
finally realized I just can’t say no
Giving my hugs to you
When I say I love you
Know I mean it is not
Just an excuse
To hug and to kiss you, so
Please don’t forget me
When I go away, I’ll be
Saving my hugs for you
If you could only see how I feel now
If you could only read my mind
You would know my feelings inside out
Then you would know that I am just
Hopelessly lost without you beside me
I’ll never be the same
If someone asks me, I’ll just have to say
That I’m giving my hugs to you
