I’ve done an RPM Challenge style album in a month (10 song or 35 minutes) every month in 2020 (except January). I told myself I was going to take October off and just work on re-recording old songs. That plan didn’t last long and eventually I found myself noodling together simple little songs that are more like exercises in things like polyrhythms and layering harmonies. Not really songs per se, unless you’ve been listening to a lot of King Crimson… which I’ve been doing.
Here is the first of 10 songs for the month. This one has two guitars playing nearly the same thing but in two different time signatures. Polyrhythms. I think it sounds cool. Does it hold together as a song? Not really, but I like it.
The guitars are all Gibson ES-335 into a Klon KTR and two amps, a Vox AC15 and a Fender Bassbreaker 15. The little double bend following the vocal added a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi 70 before the Klon.
I’d add the lyrics, but you can just read the title.

I took the last measure of the song and one phrase and pasted it into the middle of the song, dropped the rhythm guitars, and added the vocals and the fuzz box. Not a bad bit of splicing, right? Of course it’s easy when you use GarageBand and your cursor locks to the beat. Just give me this one, okay?
The guitars are a Gibson ES-335 Pro into a Klon KTR and then two amps, a Fender Bassbreaker 15 and a Vox AC15. The one note fuzz box under the vocals put a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi 70 in front of the KTR.

Not too much happening here. I like the guitarmonies. Somehow that always sounds better with a lot of fuzz. There are a couple of places where tracks play backwards. The second verse has a copy of one of the voices chopped up and reversed line by line. I loaded it up with sauce to keep it in the background and panned it all over the place too. Goofy. Also, pretty obviously the guitars on the last note are reversed too.
The rhythm guitar (what there is of it) is a trick too. I set up a delay to play at eighth notes. The timing was a little bit off so it sounds weird, but every other note is an echo. That was kinda fun to do but I wish the delay time had been a smidge more accurate.
All of the guitars are a Gibson ES-335 through two amps at once, a Vox AC15 and a Fender Bassbreaker 15. The rhythm guitar used a Klon KTR and a Wampler Faux Tape Echo. The fuzz guitars used a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi 70 and the KTR.

Something Happening

I have to apologize in advance for bars 31-37, the section right after the vocal. The whole song is playing with polyrhythms. One guitar (and the bass and drums) is playing in 4/4 time and the other guitar is playing almost the same thing in 7/8 time. I think it sounds cool.
What I didn’t consider was how that single missing eighth note in one of the guitars would sound when the phrase they are playing includes a chromatic passage. When you do the math in your head it’s obviously going to end up with the most dissonant sounding train wreck in musical history. For some reason that didn’t stop me from doing it. Pretty much anyone who listens to that passage is going to cringe like it was fingernails on a chalk board… and I LOVE it.
The other goofy thing is in the two bars or so where there is a fuzz tone guitar. As I’ve been doing for most of the year it was one guitar playing through two amps. On this occassion, since it was only a two bar phrase and nothing else was happening, I decided to reverse one amp’s worth of track. The track made up of a Shure SM-57 on a Fender Bassbreaker 15 is normal, but the track made up of a Shure SM-57 on a Vox AC15 is backwards. You’re welcome. There is some dead air on the recorded region in GarageBand so the two sounds don’t line up rhythmically, but it’s still cool in a very silly kind of way.
All of the guitars are a Gibson ES-335 Pro through the aforementioned pair of mic’d amplifiers. The two measures of fuzz tone used a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi 70 into a Klon KTR. The rest of the tracks are just the KTR.
I’d type out the lyrics, but just look at the title instead, okay? Cool. Sorry about the dissonance.

<itunes:summary>This is probably the simplest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life. An eight bar drums/bass loop, a little three part harmony on guitar, a little three part harmony vocals, a little more three part harmony on guitar, and that’s it. I think the harmonies on the guitar sound cool. Almost organ-like.
The guitar parts are a Gibson ES-335 Pro into a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi 70 fuzz pedal into a Klon KTR overdrive pedal into both a Fender Bassbreaker 15 and a Vox AC15.

In a 10 song cycle where none of the songs were meant to feel like actual songs, this one feels like an actual song. Complete with guitar solos. One of them is backwards though, so it’s got that going for it.
There’s some polyrhythm going on in the guitars so it fits this months album in a month theme. Otherwise most of the trippy games are just a tape delay (simulated) on one of the three vocal tracks.
The rhythm guitars are a Gibson ES-335 into a Klon KTR pedal and then two amps, a Vox AC15 and a Fender Bassbreaker 15. The lead added a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi 70 before the Klon.
