<itunes:summary>Back in 2015, after completing that year's RPM Challenge, I came up with a project to re-record some older songs and bundle them together into an "album". I didn't get far with it. In March of 2016 I picked up where I left off and again didn't get far. The same thing happened in 2017-2019.
This year the COVID-19 quarantine gave me some extra time to myself that needed filling with projects in the hopes of avoiding a critical level of stir craziness. One of those projects was The Great 2015 Re-Recording Project, yet again. This time I broke my list of potential songs into a few groups of eight and planned a series of EP's. Unlike every year prior, I actually managed to finish something.
This is Volume 1. Songs written between 2005 (or so) and 2014. I like to think they are all improvements over my original recordings. History will show (no it won't).</itunes:summary>

Another song from my 2013 RPM Challenge album. I always like this one, but I’m not sure I did it justice this time. There is a lot of really sloppy guitar playing, even if the Klon KTR overdrive pedal sounds EPIC. Sorry, gear nerd.
This is pretty much as prog rock as my feeble skills are capable of. There is a lot going on in this mix. Can you hear the piano doing wacky panning tricks during the choruses? Hell, can you hear the piano at all? There’s a buried super fuzzy guitar part, there’s two vocal tracks that are almost all reverb and delay. Most important: Guitarmonies!
Yeah, I might have bit off more than I can chew here, but I do like the song. Even if the choruses are really hard to sing in time.
I looked up my notes from 2013 and all it says about the lyrics is that it’s a song about a sunrise. I’ll buy that.
The guitars are all Gibson ES-335. The rhythm parts used a Fender Bassbreaker 15 as their amp. The leads used both the Fender and a Vocx AC15. Also, KLON!
Verse 1
I look out
It looks back
I look in
It looks through
Verse 2
Look around
Look behind
Look outside yourself
Look inside
Chorus
See it shine
See it climb
See it radiate
see it rise
See it shine
All the time
See it illuminate
It is mine
Break

This one was originally written during the 2014 50/90. I think it’s the closest I’ll ever come to sounding like The Police… no offense to The Police.
The guitars are all Gibson ES-335. The amps for the rhythm guitars are a Fender Bassbreaker 15. The lead ran through two amps. The Fender and a Vox AC15. I expect to be using two amps for most things going forward. For now at least.

Should Have Been Mine (2020 Version)

This song scares me. This song stresses me out. This song confuses me. I could write a song about how messed up this song makes me feel.
Is it the best song I’ve ever written? Not even close. Why then do I insist to myself that it’s the best song I’ve ever written? Why do I need this song to be a ton better than it is?
I think it was 2005… I was in a band, I think, but not the band I’m in now. I woke up from a good night’s sleep with this song almost entirely complete in my head. The lyrics in the verses weren’t there, but everything else was. Melody, riffs, bass lines, lyrics for the chorus (what little there are) were all there, fully formed. It’s not the only time that’s happened to me, but it was by far the best of the bunch.
But was it good? Also, why do I NEED it to be good? I didn’t do anything with it until 2007 when I first heard of the RPM Challenge. I was too late to join in for the month of February so I tried it a month later. This was the first thing I worked on. I didn’t finish writing it until 2011, and then I didn’t make a decent recording of it until 2012. In 2015, when I came up with the wacky idea to re-record some of my less awful music, it was the first song I worked on.
But is it worthy of all this effort? I just can’t tell! Yes? No? Maybe? I don’t know!
Anyway, I now have three versions of this song on this alonetone account. Hopefully this is better than the other two. I think it is, but is it? it’s faster… so it’s got that going for it.
The guitars are all Gibson ES-335. The amps are a Fender Bassbreaker 15 for everything. The leads also have a Vox AC15 as well. Two amps, for the win.
when was the last time
I came out in front
guilty of some crime
I just don’t know what
I’m almost there now
almost just right
just one thing eludes me
one last thing to fight
It should have been mine
some sort of deception
some stone unturned
a misplaced confession
that left me burned
but its getting closer
this thing that I need
just beyond my reach now
I beg and I plead
when was the last time
I came out in front
guilty of some crime
I just don’t know what

The guitars are all Gibson ES-335. The amps are a Fender Bassbreaker 15 for everything. The leads also have a Vox AC15 as well. Two amps, for the win.
when was the last time
I came out in front
guilty of some crime
I just don’t know what
I’m almost there now
almost just right
just one thing eludes me
one last thing to fight
It should have been mine
some sort of deception
some stone unturned
a misplaced confession
that left me burned
but its getting closer
this thing that I need
just beyond my reach now
I beg and I plead
when was the last time
I came out in front
guilty of some crime
I just don’t know what</itunes:summary>

It’s raining again
Storm coming through
Batten down
What else can you do
Arthur arrives
The waves are high
Fourth of July
Try to stay dry
Hurricane time
You can’t run away
Try to hide
Stay inside
Wind and rain given a name
Sea and sky prepare to fly
Killer waves get carried away
Peaceful eye hole in the sky

In 2015, after RPM ended, I asked myself, “now what?” The answer was to take a handful of songs from the previous few years worth of song writing and recording challenges and turn them into “an album.” I started a few songs but that was it. One year later I took it up again (and added this nugget) but didn’t get far. In 2019 I tried again. Now it’s 2020 and on top of doing an album in a month each month I am sneaking a few of these in as well. I’m hoping to get eight songs down for a sort of ep-ish thing.
This one is originally from the 2014 50/90. I wrote it about Robin Williams a day or two after he died.

Like a Brat (2020 Version)

2013 was a decent year song wise, song wise. I came up with a few good ones during the RPM Challenge in February, and one good one during NaSoAlMo in November.
This version is faster, shorter, has a bunch of new key changes, and has a little bit of fat trimmed. It’s also a lot busier in the guitars and the drums. At the last minute I decided to add the radio tuning at the start. The 2013 NaSoAlMo was seven songs all connected with sound effects. It was meant to feel like you were tuning an old radio and hitting the different songs on different stations. Clever? not at all. Fun? Not really. Worth keeping for this version of this song? Probably not, but I did it anyway.
Someone I care a lot about was having trouble with a boss who greatly undervalued him/her and this song was written in defiance for him/her.
When I started this project five years ago I added scratch guitars to this song. I played my Fender Strat and instead of using a slide during the weird little breaks I used the whammy bar. On the original recording it was a slide. I think the whammy bar was almost… almost… cool enough to bring back for this recording, but I had to stay with my Gibson guitars and go back to the slide, even though I am the worst slide player on the planet Earth.
Speaking of guitars, everything here is a Gibson ES-335. All of the rhythm parts used a Fender Bassbreaker 15 amp. The leads used that Fender and a Vox AC15. There is a Klon KTR overdrive pedal on all of the rhythm parts, and a RYRA The Klone on the leads because with each passing moment I become more and more obsessed with Klon style pedals. Shoot me.
You feel the change is coming
you know the end is near
the situation is numbing
and the next move is so clear
what’s with this lack of respect
where do they get off with that
its what you’ve come to expect
acting just like a brat
I get it
I do
they can’t keep up with you
he’s threatened
you know
he knows you’ll steal the show

<itunes:summary>2013 was a decent year song wise, song wise.
I get it
I do
they can’t keep up with you
he’s threatened
you know
he knows you’ll steal the show
it makes sense
you see
that fear would be the key
so stand up
be strong
don’t have to play along</itunes:summary>

Another song from The Great 2015 Re-Recording Project. This one originally came from my failed 2010 RPM Challenge. I liked this one at the time, and the riff is fun to play. The lyrics are about a very stressful drive from Massachusetts to Florida, specifically a late night through a drunk trucker paradise in Pennsylvania. I think the real reason I have a soft spot for this one is it was the first song I worked on after my wife and I bought our first house. I recorded guitar parts with an amplifier for the first time in years. It was kind of a life milestone.
The guitars are all Gibson ES-335. The heavy fuzz tracks and the middle eight section used a Fender Bassbreaker 15. The leads and the lighter fuzz parts in the verses used a Vox AC15.
Verse 1
Taking a ride out on stressful highway #1
gotta keep that wheel steady until the morning comes
Verse 2
Stay in my lane and hope that everyone else does too
See them drift and sway tell me what am I gonna do
Chorus
can’t see anything to my front or to my back
They all push it way too fast and I just know we’re gonna crash
