I own three Gibson guitars and have been wanting to write a silly instrumental that includes all of them. This is it. The rhythm guitar is my ’79 ES 335 Pro, the lead on the left is my ’18 SG Standard, and the lead on the right is my ’79 Les Paul Custom.
I used some studio tools on this one that I usually don’t like to use. Both lead guitar tracks have a noise gate. I HATE using noise gates, but I don’t have time to come up with another way to get rid of the ground noise. The ES 335 has strings that are almost two years old so I used a lot of effects to try and bring the deadness to life. It really didn’t work.

No one ever rocks in 3/4 time. This is a cheesy attempt to do just that. I woke up one morning with the music for this pretty much complete in my head. I recorded the rhythm guitars and vocals over a simple drum and bass loop. When I went back later that day to add the lead guitar I had to pad it out at the end. I added 16 of the 24 bars in the outro solo. I wanted the song to be really short, but I felt I was being lame with it coming in at under two minutes. This evening, while sitting in our hotel room at Disney World I replaced the drums and edited the bass and mixed it all. It’s pretty lame, but it’s okay I guess.
The guitars are all Les Paul into two Fender Bassbreakers, using a Klon KTR and a Fulltone OCD.
What’s the significance
Where is the evidence
What are we heading for
When are we getting more
What are we coming to
What are we gonna do

This one was fun to play while I was working on it, but now it’s kind of a turd. I don’t know if I am going to drop anything from this year’s RPM Challenge album, but if I do this is definitely a candidate. The lyrics are cheese, the singing is bad, the lead guitar is sloppy and repetitive. Just a big giant Meh.
On the upside, it’s song #14 so FAWM is complete. I’m pleased with that. The guitars are all Les Paul into a Klon KTR into a Fulltone OCD, into two Fender Bassbreakers. With the exception of the 15 watt amp this is the sound I use with my band… so that’s cool.

The lyrics are about how I used to be a cynical asshole when it came to love and relationships and then I met my wife and suddenly I’m a walking/talking teen pop love song. Oh well. It worked out in the end, right?
Musically this song is a good example of a crutch I’ve been leaning on this RPM/FAWM season: The long drawn out quieter section. Guitar wise it continues my current tonal love affair with the Klon KTR overdrive pedal, and the Wren and Cuff Tri Pi ‘70, Big Muff Pi clone. Every guitar part I’ve recorded this year has been through a mic’d amp, but strangely (for me) I think this is the only song that has guitar feedback. I usually put that stuff on everything.
The guitars are all Les Paul through two Fender Bassbreakers.
Chorus

then I found my true opposite number
That’s when life began
since that day when she first appeared to me
when my place in the world had to change
Now it starts to make sense and I can see
I can be that man
Verse 2
sing a song to the one who completes you
open up to the one you adore
all the walls start to fall it’s a breakthrough

This was written on the guitar rather than on a midi instrument in GarageBand, so I like it a little for that alone. All the guitars are Les Paul into two Fender Bassbreakers. Rhythm uses a Klon KTR and a little MXR Phase 90? I think? The lead has a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi 70 into the KTR. Filthy.

I woke up this morning with an idea for a strummy riff in my head. I telecommuted to work today and in the couple of hours before I had to punch in to work I wrote all the sections and recorded the rhythm guitars to a guide drum track. During my lunch break I wrote the lyrics and the melody and recorded the vocals. After work I added the bass and drums midi tracks and mixed the whole sucker. Now I’m uploading it here before I go back to bed. Not bad for one day… even if the song is pretty weak.
The guitar is a Les Paul through two Fender Bassbreakers and the pedals continue my absolute love affair with the Klon KTR. There’s an MXR Uni-Vibe, a Mooer e-Lady, and a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah in there too.
So it’s the end
Take a look around
What can you recommend to me
One after another the pieces start to fall
You might have to dream up the meaning of it all
You can’t pretend
That there’s a better way
That you can have a say on it
no time like tomorrow
nowhere else to go

<itunes:summary>I woke up this morning with an idea for a strummy riff in my head.
That there’s a better way
That you can have a say on it
no time like tomorrow
nowhere else to go</itunes:summary>

This was the first idea I had for RPM this year. It was the first song to have guitars, the first to have lyrics, the first to have pretty much everything. Why then wasn’t it the first to get mixed? I don’t know. I kinda like this but maybe it’s falling out of favor? I’m not even sure what the lyrics are about anymore.
The guitars are all Les Paul, the amps are two Fender Bassbreakers (the 15 watt and the 18/30 at 18 watts), there is a Klon KTR pedal on every track and that overdrive pedal is sweeeeeeeeeeet. The lead also has a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi ’70 which is a clone of the original Big Muff Pi fuzz circuit. That, friends, is all the gear nerd I can give you today.
Its not one thing its another
once again
I’m left there staring in wonder
in the end
Give me some reason for action
I’ll be there
Give me some cry for attention
anywhere
Just when you thought it was over
it comes around
just when you thought you were free
Once in a lifetime
Once every life
Once every night time

The lyrics are the first time I ever turned a tweet into a song. When the US Senate acquitted the fascist Donald Trump in the impeachment “trial” and thus set the legal precedent that the president can rig elections without fear of consequences I tweeted something along the lines of the Senate just rubber stamped evil. Verse 1
watch how
it slips right by
see now
what a tough guy
he can do
anything
he wants to
Chorus
And now you put a rubber stamp on his evil
on his evil
And now you give approval to all his crimes
all his crimes
Verse 2
we had
a real nice run
we had

it all ends
Verse 3
Crumbling
it all comes down
Ending

I don’t believe what I want to believe
I only believe in truth
Not with a bang but a wimper
That’s how the story goes

Verse 1
There’s got to be a better way
We to have another say
There has to come another day
We need it now we can’t delay

We have to stop that maniac

The End is Coming (Coffee Shoppe Mix)

Back in 1991 I was a music major at UMass Lowell in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was in the audio program and I was flunking out because I had zero math skills. I was not flunking out in the instrumental music courses though. I played guitar at home and it was already my #1 musical love, but in school I was a sax player. I was near the bottom in the rankings in the school, but I didn’t suck. Everyone there was incredible and I didn’t quite measure up, but I didn’t suck. I was actually pretty good.
I dropped out before my inability to pass Calculus would kick me out and I quickly stopped being a sax player who could also play guitar and I became a guitar player who used to play sax. Every now and then I get the urge to make sure I can still do it, and I am in that frame of mind right now in a big way. So much so that I am challenging myself to have sax be the lead instrument on half of my RPM/FAMW songs this year. I haven’t touched my horn since 2013 but I can still play. I can’t play well, but I can still get by… mostly. It’s not quite like riding a bike, but it’s in the ball park.
Note that almost all of my lyrics this year about my belief that democracy in the United States of America is dead and buried and we are living through the birth of a fascist dictatorship. You know, a light little topic for a pop record.
Verse 1
How did you think this was gonna to go
How did you think this would end
You couldn’t see we were going low
so clear to me
Break
right around the corner it’s so obvious
we can’t avoid the wall
right around the corner it’s so obvious
we’re gonna the wall
Verse 2
And now we watch, as it all comes apart
The pieces scattered around
They took the knife, and stabbed us through the heart
It’s over now
Chorus
The end is coming
The end is coming soon
The end is coming soon
It is here, It is here

Long story…
or, What the hell is a cajon anyway?
I listen to a podcast about cover bands. One of the hosts is a drummer and he plays in an acoustic group. He said he played his cajon at the acoustic gigs. I thought, what the hell is a cajon?
Google informed me that it’s this box thing that you sit on and smack with your hands. There is a hole in it somewhere and even some snares and depending on where you whack it you get a bass drum-ish sound or a snare drum-ish sound. It’s kinda neat.
Fast forward a few months and I’m sitting alone in Epcot center, just outside of Soarin’ (true story) and I was tapping away on GarageBand on my iPhone trying to come up with something different from my usual power trio arrangements. Turns out one of the percussion settings in the drummer function had a cajon. I started thinking like a hippie in a coffee house and thought, cajon, acoustic guitar, and cello. Well, GarageBand’s string sounds are crap and the cello was scratched in it’s place I thought maybe I could dust off my alto sax and use that as the soloist. I hadn’t played my sax since 2013 (I think) and it was time.
Nothing ever became of that Epcot Center song idea, but when RPM 2020 came around I came back to that idea. I decided to make half of my album the usual rock band stuff, and the other half this goofy coffee shoppe thing. If time permits I am going to do a rock band mix of the coffee shoppe songs too, but we’ll see.
This song is about how the US Senate gave the fascist in the white house legal permission to rig elections.
Today’s the day
the end of days
I think we need to accept it
Time’s run out
its all about
how we can never reverse it
Looks like we;re done
look what we;ve become
the very thing that we hated
Could it be worse
some kind of curse
and it can never be sated
Times up
Times up
so long and good luck
Times up
sure ‘nuff
its all run amuck

The End is Coming (Bar Band Mix)

The plan for the RPM Challenge this year is to do an album with two distinct parts. Side One (if you’ll indulge the ancient way of thinking) will be a straight up bar band. The instrumentation will be my normal guitar/bass/drums/vocals. Side Two (it’s funny to say that) will be more of a coffee Shop (Shoppe) combo of acoustic guitar/hand percussion (mostly a cajon)/saxophone/vocals.
This song will be from side three. I am planning on an alternate version of each coffee shoppe song that adds a bass guitar, and replaces the cajon with drums and the sax with electric guitar.
The coffee shoppe mix is here:
alonetone.com/robertjames1971/...e-end-is-coming
The acoustic guitar is my Takamine 12-string whose model name escapes me. The electric is my Les Paul through two Fender Bassbreakers with a Klon KTR overdrive pedal and a Mooer e-Lady (or elec-lady, I’m not sure which version I have) flanger in filter mode.
Verse 1
How did you think this was gonna to go
How did you think this would end
You couldn’t see we were going low
so clear to me
Break
right around the corner it’s so obvious
we can’t avoid the wall
right around the corner it’s so obvious
we’re gonna the wall
Verse 2
And now we watch, as it all comes apart
The pieces scattered around
They took the knife, and stabbed us through the heart
It’s over now
Chorus
The end is coming
The end is coming soon
The end is coming soon
It is here, It is here

<itunes:summary>The plan for the RPM Challenge this year is to do an album with two distinct parts.

The acoustic guitar is my Takamine 12-string whose model name escapes me. The electric is my Les Paul through two Fender Bassbreakers with a Klon KTR overdrive pedal and a Mooer e-Lady (or elec-lady, I’m not sure which version I have) flanger in filter mode.
Verse 1
How did you think this was gonna to go
How did you think this would end
You couldn’t see we were going low
so clear to me
Break
right around the corner it’s so obvious
we can’t avoid the wall
right around the corner it’s so obvious
we’re gonna the wall
Verse 2
And now we watch, as it all comes apart
The pieces scattered around
They took the knife, and stabbed us through the heart
It’s over now
Chorus
The end is coming
The end is coming soon
The end is coming soon
It is here, It is here</itunes:summary>
