Born in Kaohsiung, Berlin-based composer-performer Johnny Chang engages in extended explorations surrounding the relationships of sound/listening and the in-between areas of improvisation, composition and performance. He studied Music in Auckland, New Zealand with focus on Violin (University of Auckland, Bachelor of Music). For his Masters degree, he focused on “Contemporary Performance” and “Composition” at CalArts (California Institute of Arts, Valencia, California) between 2000-2006. As composer and performer, his articulated performances have been featured in many festivals across Europe, and New Zealand, Australia, as well as New York and Seoul.
Since November 2010, Johnny Chang and Koen Nutters initiated and co-curated concert series Konzert Minimal which presents performances and events centered around the music of the Wandelweiser group. The Wandelweiser Group is an international group of composers/performers founded in 1992 in Europe. According to one of the core artist Radu Malfatti, Wandelweiser music is about "the evaluation and integration of silence(s) rather than an ongoing carpet of never-ending sounds”. John Cage is a figure of central importance to the Wandelweiser composers; their music is often referred to as "silent music," taking as its starting point Cage’s work 4'33", the first composition to consist largely of silence, after the "Marche Funebre" by the Frenchman Alphonse Allais.
