Dave Lee - Vocals/Words

Transfered from cassette 2026.
After Dave's group Chinese Religion came to an end in 1981 he I did some writing & recording.
All in the Modern Eon practice room, located above Modular Design, Duke Street, Liverpool.
I've not heard the recordings since back then. I was expecting to hear just drums & vocals, I'd forgotten I'd overdubbed Bass/Guitar/Casio Viletone, all taped/bounced on a borrowed Reel to Reel machine [that I didn't know how to use].
Anyway, the recordings were forgotten about, then, a few years back, Dave died.
I've given this song a remix/remaster job mainly because my pal Paul Cavanagh [Chinese Religion's guitarist] expressed an interest in hearing the tapes.
Here you go Paul, you asked!
I played drums on the Chinese Religion single My Motive.

From a rather ragged cassette recording of our first time in a recording studio, first time hearing these songs in years.
Recorded by Mike 'Noddy' Knowler in the Open Eye Studio which used to be at the end of Whitechapel, Liverpool.
Replaced by Queens Square.
I think this is the first recorded example of a song where I wrote the words. I doubt it comes across, but it's supposed to be about a person who finds themselves being edited out of existence by unknown forces, being disappeared if you will. 1978 you say, fun times.
The audio quality is reasonably dreadful, but it's over in less than a minute.

[Practice Tape]
In the 1980's members of Liverpool groups Kit & Benny Profane put together a 'just for fun' [& some busking] group
The El-Dorados
From Kit we had Michelle Brown on drum & Lein Sangster on guitar
From Benny Profane, Dave Jackson on vocals & Joe Mckechnie on guitar.
We all joined in on the singing from time to time.
We got our best review the afternoon we were busking in front of the Oxfam shop on Bold Street, Liverpool
We'd gone through our set a few times, Country standards, songs by Elvis & The Modern Lovers, eventually we were approached by the man from the newsagents that used to be opposite Oxfam, he wanted to have a word.
"I'm a big fan of music, I'm a big fan of Country music... but if I hear Rawhide one more time."
We moved down a couple of streets.

they said: tell us who owns this place?
we said
you
they said: tell us, who runs this place?
but then we thought:
are they from down the road?
is this another trap?
they said: you're not being clear
you're not very clear
tell us who runs this place?
we said
power
they said: you're still not clear
tell us, who runs this place?
but then we thought:
are they from the back room?
are they from down the road?
is this the right word?
love?
but then we thought: it's always the same
that things won't change
we've nothing to lose
and so we agreed
we'd tell them the truth
they said:
you're free to go if you say that again
you're free to go if you say love again
tell us who runs this place
but we said
fear
that one word fucked their heart

[Live Manchester University 2nd Dec 1999]
Right, we're gonna go back... Spaced 1999
Liverpool: 1st December 1999, round about teatime.
I'm at my Mums, we're just getting ready to have tea when the phone goes, it's Will, he's tracked me down to say The Bunnymen are going on tour the next day & their drummer has gone AWOL.
Jump a cab to Crash Studios as quick as you can he says, there's drumming to be done.
In Crash rehearsal room we play the set once, it sounds a bit ropey, as you might expect, still, it's a bit of a worry.
We go the pub for a drink or two.
Back in Crash we go through the set again, it's still ropey, but somehow, now it's less of a worry.
Manchester: 2nd December 1999, round about teatime.
So, here I am, sat onstage with The Bunnymen at Manchester University, we're about to play All That Jazz, the first song of the first night of the tour.
As Mac says, "welcome to our new drummer, he's been with us about 12 hours".
The December '99 tour took us around the UK, I stayed on to play the Millennium gig in front of St Georges Hall, Liverpool, and that was the end of my time as a 'Current Bun'.
Joe Mckechnie
It wasn't until 2012 that I finally got to hear the recording of this gig, thanks to Alex Staszko.
There's only one Bunnymen drummer - Pete de Freitas
