Ambivalent presents _ground
MINUS12.14-34

Ambivalent will present “_ground” his first DJ mix CD this Summer. Comprised entirely of previously unreleased music by new and emerging artists, the compilation surveys the artists who are set to break new ground over the coming years. The mix includes 21 new tracks by 13 artists, some of whom have never released, others are familiar to discerning ears, and some still are unique side-projects from established studio talents.

Spanning the sounds of the (under)_ground, the (over)_ground and the (back)_ground, the mix blurs the barriers of techno and house, deep and driving, minimal and maximal. While some tracks borrow disco samples to make an appealing party groove, others embrace classic analogue techno, still others hold closely to the stable foundation of Minus-style minimal. Ambivalent’s propensity to avoid labels as a DJ, and his self-declared “ambivalence” about categories make this mix a smooth, but bold step across boundaries.

“In English we have an expression ‘to keep your ear to the ground’ which means to stay aware of what’s happening, and what’s coming next,” says Ambivalent. “All of these artists are producers whose music I’ve been following and playing the past few years. I feel like this is a statement of the musical terrain at the moment.”

Some of the artists included are more known than others. Camea, a good friend to the Minus crew, is included, as well as Benny Rodrigues’s minimal techno moniker ROD. Another seasoned studio sorcerer who emerges a bit differently here is Eduardo de la Calle, known for his sensational releases as Analog Solutions which swirled the memories of early 90s techno with a distinctly UR-style guerrilla approach. Macedonian producer Saso Recyd first stepped into the Minus milieu with his remix of Ambivalent’s Jackson on Plus 8, and puts three stakes deeply into “_ground.”

The mix and its individual tracks will be released on Minus12, the new imprint designed to allow fresh voices to broaden the platform of its famous namesake. Begun with Richie Hawtin’s New Horizons, the imprint has tasked itself with keeping an eye to the future, and an ear to the ground.

Whether these artists are under-ground, over-ground or still on the horizon is up to the listener to decide. It’s clear that the selection of talent represents a new set of faces ready to build on solid “_ground.”
