Santa BUŠS is a Latvian composer especially interested in detailed pre-compositional process and working with extra-musical ideas (found in other art forms, physiology, history, mythology, nature, architecture, medicine, sports, philosophy, etc.).
Though her main focus and form of expression has been linked with instrumental music, lately she has discovered a deep interest in the voice and its possibilities, as well as being keen to expand her approach towards sound, composition and exploring different forms of collaboration.
This also includes exploring territories between conventional and unconventional notation and performance techniques, as well as experimenting between the boundaries of music, theatre and opera, often focusing on the physical manipulation of instruments and the presence of musicians as a source of drama.
She has studied both composition and musicology at the Latvian Academy of Music and Hamburg University of Music and Theatre.
Her works have been performed throughout Europe, in North America and Asia.</itunes:summary>

"Initially 'liminarité' (liminality) was associated with the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. In the course of time, the notion of liminality has been interpreted more extensively. The dusk is liminal in a sense, and so are revolutions or carnivals, or any secluded way of life, or traveling, or any sudden change. Here we have ambiguity and precariousness, detachment and approaching, the balance between what we know and what we cannot predict, everything dangerous and the fascinating, the reflective wait state and wild thirst for action. Liminality is a waiting room and the interim, when you are rather 'in between' than 'in the middle' – that means you keep seeking for ever more points of reference."

"In Latvia, 2015 was the year of Rainis and Aspazija. These two personalities are to Latvia what Goethe is to Germany and Shakespeare to the United Kingdom. They wrote plays and poems, worked as journalists, and translated world classics. Rainis (1865-1929) was imprisoned for his political activities and later went into exile. After 1918, when Latvia gained its independence, he became the Minister for Education. Aspazija (1865-1943) did not leave his side either during his deportation to Russia, or when he was in exile in Switzerland. She fought for women’s rights and did not shy away from speaking about the inconsistency of human nature and the anticipated independence of the Latvian nation. The piece 'Domas, manas domas' ('This is what I think') is inspired by Aspazija's work and it's structure is based on her poem 'Manas domas' ('My Thoughts')."

"The Latin phrase 'sub rosa' means 'under the rose', and is used in English to denote secrecy or confidentiality. "Once you find a sea glass you can only guess where it comes from and how old it is. You may pass by it or choose to see it's beauty and look for some mystery and secrets behind it. Are those pieces of glass from broken bottles, broken tableware or even shipwrecks that are rolled and tumbled in the sea or ocean for years until all of their edges are rounded off, and the slickness of the glass has been worn to a frosted appearance? Glass, transparent and fragile, once broken in shards and drowned is hardened by salty water and sand, changed and transformed. Maybe it is lost beauty but maybe gained. In this piece that is written especially for mise-en I am trying to imagine both the pre-history of the sea glass while associatively having that piece of glass in my hands and looking through it and at in from different angles and perspectives, as well as concentrate on several aspects of the weathering process itself."

for cello, percussion and piano (2012) :
Trio Art-i-Shock (Live recording)
:
:
"Absinthe is one of the most mystical beverages in the world, and there are hundreds of legends and stories about its specific effect on the imbiber. The only true fact about it is that the beverage, which is known as the 'green fairy', was banned for nearly a century. I am fascinated by the special 'absinthe effect'- the changed sense of reality, the flow and ebb of energy, nervousness which interweaves with apathy and a sense of helpless paralysis, as well as a nearly uncontrollable shift between reality and hallucinations. I am equally interested in the specific process of enjoying absinthe. When the beverage was at its apex of popularity, a ritual for its consumption was developed down to the most specific detail. Of importance is the form of the glass and the special absinthe spoon. The sugar cube on the spoon is slowly melted and dissolved, with icy-cold stream water being poured onto it drop by drop from a special flagon. The water and the sugar drip into the absinthe, and the initial clear or intensively green colour changed to a nearly non-transparent and light blue tint.

The form of the composition can be associated with the shape of the absinthe glass and its importance in the relevant ritual, thinking about materials with various types and characteristics that are involved in this ritual. The glass is hard, but also fragile and transparent, the liquid is transparent and then non-transparent, the sugar is hard and crystal pure or dissolving, and the metal has properties which do not change. The development of events can, to a certain extent, be linked to the ritual of preparing absinthe, as well as to the various effects which the beverage creates. The palette of sound, in turn, can be associated with the way in which this sweetly bitter treasure changes one's views about things and emotions."

The palette of sound, in turn, can be associated with the way in which this sweetly bitter treasure changes one's views about things and emotions."</itunes:summary>
