Now here we are working on a re-recording project and I thought it would be fun to scotch tape the two songs into a mini medley. I recorded everything together, so it’s the same tracks running all the way through both songs. I think it came out okay. I monkeyed with the transition during the mix. I originally had a two bar thing with just hi hats and a little guitar noodle. I doubled the length without adding any more guitar, and had the guitar that was there play backwards. I think it’s better this way.

I think I might absolutely freakin’ love this song.

Well… the chorus at least. The rest is okay, but the chorus friggin’ slams.

I wrote and recorded this in November 2014 for that year’s National Solo Album Month. It’s been added to and dropped from my re-recording list multiple times. I still don’t think I did it justice, but I have a mix now… even though it’s almost midnight and I should have been asleep two hours ago and I have no clue if this mix is any good or not. It’s actually been sitting around waiting to be mixed since June of 2022… it’s now March of 2024 (in case you stumble upon this at some date in the far off future). I just really wanted this version to come out great, so much so that I have been literally afraid of it.

But it’s done now. The original version of the song was about two minutes longer than this version. I absolutely gutted it to try and make it slap more. I think my editing choices were good ones. I hope at some mythical far off point in time I will still think so. Who knows.

I’m hovering between “this is okay” and “this is almost okay.” I don’t hate it. I think it goes to the chorus a few too many times (is that even possible?) and the mix feels sloppy. We came home from a planned long weekend trip to Disney World early because my wife was sick. Turns out it was Covid. I was feeling fine though so I tried to do an album in a day project to try and make up for some lost 50/90 challenge time. I got four songs into it, two of which were finished tracking and just needed to be mixed, before I started feeling sick too. A week later I think 50/90 is down the tubes for good, but I can still keep picking away at it and maybe change it to 50 songs in 120 days?

This was the first of the album in a day things and I really like the song, though I don’t like the performance or the recording or the mix and the vocals are freakin’ atrocious. Kinda of a neat-o song though.

We came home from a planned long weekend trip to Disney World early because my wife was sick. Turns out it was Covid. This is another in a long line of attempts to make a legitimate 70’s head banger in 3/4 time. It’s a pretty decent shot, I think.

The real interesting thing for me is the guitar I played. The rhythm and lead tracks both used my step son’s guitar. Many years ago he started taking lessons and I bought him a starter package. You know, a very, very inexpensive guitar that comes in a box with a small amplifier and a cable and a strap, all in one nice pretty package. Given that it’s me we’re talking about, I got him a Les Paul. Specifically, an Epiphone Les Paul Special II, which somehow was a Slash model? It has a G&R-ish design on the headstock.

He doesn’t play guitar anymore (he’s a piano and percussion guy) and I stumbled on his guitar when I was helping him move into his own apartment a couple of months ago. I told him I was going to use his guitar on one of my song writing/recording projects. He didn’t say no, so here it is. The strings are probably seven years old and they feel like barbed wire, but I used them. It gives me a touch of the warm and fuzzies. I just wish I had used it on a better song.

This one is in 9/4 time, which is interesting. The fuzz tone on the leads is kinda fat and groovy and sweet. Other than that and maybe the pre-chorus sections there isn’t much interesting here. It exists though, so that’s cool.

This one is in 9/4 time, which is interesting. The fuzz tone on the leads is kinda fat and groovy and sweet. Other than that and maybe the pre-chorus sections there isn’t much interesting here. It exists though, so that’s cool.

It seems like every time I work on one of these projects and start thinking my mixes are too dry so I start adding more delay and reverb on the individual instruments there comes a time where things suddenly feel too wet and I therefore overreact in the opposite direction and things get very dry again. This mix feels like the it’s-too-wet tipping point. We’ll see how the next one comes out.

I like this song. There’s nothing to it at all. It’s overly simplistic. I don’t care. I like it. It’s kinda groovy. I have changed my workflow a bit when it comes to recording guitars. I have decided to focus most of my guitar playing attention on early mornings before work, which means I am going direct rather than mic’ing up my amp. Mostly. Some songs will be one or the other and some will be both. This one used the direct output and built in cabinet simulation on my little Vox MV50 amplifier on all of the guitar tracks. The guitars are all my Les Paul Standard and the only pedal I used is an Analog Man King of Tone, which I was finally able to get after spending five years on the waiting list. Epic Tones, bro.

I had this riff in mind. It was in 6/4 time. Something dark and evil possessed me as I was working out the bass line in GarageBand and I was infernally inspired to snip an eighth note off the end of the bar and change the time signature to 11/8.

That’s why, for the most part, the rhythm guitar part and the vocal melody are both stupidly simple… it’s because if I challenged myself at all I was going to be unable to play in time. The fuzzy guitar lead at the very end is the perfect example. I think it took about 25 takes to get something that was even close to in time… and what I went with is pretty crappy as far as timing goes.

This song is not good, but I will probably put it onto the final RPM Challenge album submission because my prog loving self can’t stop grinning at playing a song in 11/8 time. Sorry, everyone.

I had this riff in mind. It was in 6/4 time. Something dark and evil possessed me as I was working out the bass line in GarageBand and I was infernally inspired to snip an eighth note off the end of the bar and change the time signature to 11/8.

That’s why, for the most part, the rhythm guitar part and the vocal melody are both stupidly simple… it’s because if I challenged myself at all I was going to be unable to play in time. The fuzzy guitar lead at the very end is the perfect example. I think it took about 25 takes to get something that was even close to in time… and what I went with is pretty crappy as far as timing goes.

This song is not good, but I will probably put it onto the final RPM Challenge album submission because my prog loving self can’t stop grinning at playing a song in 11/8 time. Sorry, everyone.

Jeff Beck died and I was gutted. It’s hard to lose your heroes, but it’s also odd to feel so emotional about the loss of someone you’ve never met. Life is weird, right?

I did not want to write a song that sounded like Jeff Beck because that would be idiotic. I also didn’t want to write an instrumental because when I do that they tend to be pretty awful. What I wanted was a song that used the guitar to carry the melody in places, sort of the way Beck’s best work uses the guitar to drive the melody. This is what I came up with.

There’s a brutally bad punch in at the start of the 17th bar. The vocals are bad, but the melody I came up with was worse as I forgot to allow for breathing. I ended up slicing it into four bar chunks and recording it in pieces. Now that it’s all done I am bothered by the guitar tone during the solos. I think I should have stuck with the lower gain sound I used in the rhythm tracks rather than use a fuzz box. The wah probably should go away too, but that’s not what bothers me. It’s just the gain level. I should have stayed cleaner.

I had stomach surgery almost five months ago and I couldn’t play for the first month as I recovered. Then when I started slowly venturing back into music I blew out my voice while tracking some vocals and it scared the hell out of me. My range was reduced to that of a croaky flea and I backed off while I impatiently hoped it would return. It did, mostly. In the meantime I threw myself into my other creative outlet, bad photography, until I came to the realization that buying and developing film is tough to afford when you have two kids in college. So I picked up my guitar again, only to find that my shiny new MacBook Pro with an M1 chip doesn’t play nicely with my USB audio interface and my home recording setup is a small step above useless.

So yeah, the song is shit but the fact that it exists is kinda miraculous. There should be three more songs coming right behind this one and they are all worse… so… yeah.
