Rocksteady Disco

Detroit, MI 48216, United States

Rocksteady reggae marked the sublime time period between first wave Ska and more modern Reggae. Bands decided to cool it down, pour their hearts out, and add a little more groove. The “disco”, short for discotheque, is a place where pre-recorded music is played by DJs and selectors. We believe the disco should be a place where you come as you are to be your true self. Cisgender, transgender, queer, straight, and all of us in between can dance ourselves clean and forget about the stuff weighing us down. You’re more likely to hear House, Garage, Boogie, and Disco at our parties, but Rocksteady Disco is the clash of retro Jamaican soundsystem culture with modern Discotheques.

Making people decompress from all of the serious situations in their life is serious business. At least that's what we believe at Rocksteady Disco. We believe as musicians, DJs, producers, and promoters, we're on a mission from God. Dance music was born out of struggle and liberation, and has been white-washed and corporatized since it's sweaty beginnings in Lagos, Kingston, New York, Chicago, and Detroit. We're here to put it back on track.

Rocksteady Disco was founded by Peter Croce in the spring of 2014 as a weekly happy hour on the patio at Motor City Wine, one of Detroit's most robust musical hubs. While Peter has never put out a release, his relentless gigging schedule coupled with borderline anal-retentive mixing techniques make him a prime track tester for producers in the city and beyond. After Lafleur dropped a heap of edits on him he chose "Peace", "Consume", and "Love" to mark Rocksteady Disco's welcome addition of a vinyl record label.

Quickly realizing he needed a formidable team of forward-thinking musical talent he called upon Dretraxx and Matt Dandois to make more funk happen. Shortly thereafter Pontchartrain was added to the team, since he's the King Tubby of Disco after all.
