🥁+💣
A unique studio mix, with the genres and songs represented. Lyrical rap songs & "90s" indie rock are the foundation, with many diverse aural stops in turntablism, progressive rock, "alternative" rock, melodic/atmospheric drum n bass, downtempo, and a personal favorite blend where pop music meets leftfield bass.

The music selection spans the 80s-90s-2000s-2010s & present, many of the songs and artists on here, have unbreakable associations with specific people and moments in my life, so there's definitely some personal baked in nostalgia going on too.

The selections represent favourite songs, but some songs are also representing my favourite albums of the year. Also songs don't necessarily have to have dropped this year, it's all about those sounds making up my aural experience during the year.

IMO this was a landmark year for rap albums & pretty fucking good for the bass music I gravitate to. Thanks for peeping it!

A studio mix of raw rap music.

The loose concept is using rap songs which have choruses that are pure Hip-Hop. Chorus structures which owe more to being birthed by the culture, than the influences of commercial music. That's not to say there aren't many dope rap songs with catchy as fuck hooks, but I think more about the tracks which were forced to have more traditional choruses, and ended up worse for it.

In this mix I'm celebrating the scratched hook where the DJ can get busy, the choruses where an MC just spits a few words and then lets the beat rock while taking a B-Boy stance, or the decision to have no chorus and just keeping the ill rhymes coming back to back.
Everything's from this past year, except the dope Vince Staples album "FM!" which I some how missed listening to in 2018. I've made sure to let the rap songs run, so that every artist on each track gets at least one verse to spit those 2020 bars.=-
At times, songs contain more truth about history, than what becomes the present and accepted establishment take on the past (Killer Mike's "Reagan" is the perfect example of this, listen to that song, and then google what Obama has said about Reagan when he was President).
This mix is a collection of such songs, and other music expressing a dissatisfaction with the stat quo systems of oppression which still exist in many forms. It's a tribute to those standing up and actually acting to fight for equality, and possibly also a means to introduce some of these topics to someone previously unaware of the issues.

Thanks for taking the time to listen!

In some circumstances, just making music and existing as an artist is an act moving a cause forward.

I created it as a tribute to our friendship and celebrating all the phenomenal music experiences we've had together.

All the songs/artists selected either connect to concerts we've been to (or the underground hip hop "anthems" played at all the REMG shows we went to in Toronto), or are ones we've helped put each other onto. There are diverse styles of rap music and other genres represented, a decent amount of music that other people we know may have not understood the draw of. There could very well be multiple volumes based on this same theme, but for now I'm really happy how this first shot ended up.
It encompasses a few of my absolute favourite songs, tracks & clips from some of my favourite artists, spanning genres such as hip hop, indie rawk, post-hardcore, noise rock, dnb & downtempo. <itunes:summary>This DAW mix is an expression of who I am as a person. It encompasses a few of my absolute favourite songs, tracks & clips from some of my favourite artists, spanning genres such as hip hop, indie rawk, post-hardcore, noise rock, dnb & downtempo. Music has had an exceedingly positive effect on my life, whether being made aware of perspectives different from my own, or how being engulfed in dope sounds has helped me manage my depression & anxiety. Now full circle, it's finding the joys in creation, not worrying about failure when learning, which energizes my mental health and life. We all have the opportunity for digital immortality, I've chosen to attempt to leave behind a legacy of creating and sharing my love of amazing art.
