Having spent a few years back in the 90's hanging around clubs like the Torture Garden in London, which combined hardcore techno with a lot of shiny rubber, I have been meaning to do a squeaky rubbery track for years. This samples heavily from the oft-sampled and hilarious 1965 movie "Perversion for Profit" that features the vocal stylings of one George Putnam.

The thing I love about this movie, aside from the usual roping in (pun intended) of all sorts of non-vanilla-hetero-missionary-position sex into an amorphous mass of "Deviance", and the funny but bizarrely still popular notion that you can influence people into becoming gay, is the pervy salaciousness of the whole thing.

This is how the Daily Mail write their horrible rag, pretending outrage at a topic while displaying a prurient fascination with every detail. Putnam himself sounds like he can hardly contain his boner as he draws out his sibilants and describes is 'perversions' in as much detail as he can get away with. This is my main problem with prudery per se, non prudes, on hearing about some sexual practice they do not particularly go for, will show an interest, because sex is always interesting, but then consign that practice to the "Meh, not for me" pile. But the self appointed moral guardians of society cannot ignore what other people are doing in bed. Prudery is always just poorly masked rage that other people are less inhibited or more free to do things the prude would like. For proof of this you only need to look at American Christian anti gay crusaders, they believe being gay is a choice because they have been forced to 'choose' to be straight. For straight people being gay is not a choice, they wouldn't be able to get turned on by it. Inevitably every "moral crusader" is eventually outed as a closet something or another. It is a truism so trite I am amazed it still needs explaining.

processed bleeps and squawks but it just wasn't coming together, so I opened up Stochastik with the intention of adding another layer of percussion
and got sidetracked playing with the Jungle preset that the app opens on, I was having fun so I wrote a new pattern at 164bpm and tingered around with it.
I eventually wrote about half a dozen distinct bits of varying levels of intensity and exported the best 3 to loopy as 16 bar patterns. I liked the
way it sounded with my original Zed synth parts but had no idea what to do next, eventually I opened up Nave and just jammed along until I got that
bassoon sounding lead line, I seem to like that sound a lot this year, it has taken over from my cello obsession from last year. Anyway - added the two
lead lines and an effect or two and pasted the lot into Nanostudio where I added a sub-bass and a couple of kick lines. Finally found the samples from
Maniac (1934) and pasted a bunch of them in - but the 32 bars of "Burning in my head, flowing through my veins, snort, gasp" I stumbled upon by accident

I put the things together and found I loved the result. Incidentally there is a lot of serendipity in this piece, the original stems were 120 bpm but my finger slipped when i was pasting them into loopy and i ended up with a tiny loop of the bus braking (i was on the bus at the time), after i had pasted the stems i listened to the snippet and liked it so i ran it through some stuff and ended up with some nice industrial sounds... Then later realized that the little loop has set liipy to 178bpm and so all my alchemy stems had been reprocessed to,that time signature. The end effect was way better than the original so i kept it. Thanks 545 bus, thanks loopy, thanks clumsy fingers!!]]>

Liked the beats I was getting so when I got home and had a house full of screaming kids I laid down 4 or 5 synth tracks from microTERA, just hitting random patch. Incidentally I would like feedback on the lead line in the last quarter after the drop. I deliberately recorded it 'loose' on the timings to give it a more human/organic feel, and liked it that way, but now I am having some doubts and wonder if I shouldn't re-do it. What do you think?

Possibly interesting information: The stems of this track were originally an ielectribe jam and the youtube samples. I had always planned to add a fairly minimal bass line... and that was when the trouble started. This is version 8 or more. Originally I tried Animoog (which still features heavily) but couldn't get the right vibe, then I used bassline and that was OK... until I discovered that the bass drum on the ielectribe was playing a slightly sharp F, and so my usual key of C Pentatonic Minor was not working AT ALL. Then I moved briefly to ipolysix, less said about that the better. I love iPolySix for punchy rubbery basses but it was all wrong for this. On a whim I cranked up Chauliodus and had a play with that.. nice filthy sound but horrible clipping. I discovered though that if you turn everything on Chauliodus down to almost zero you can get some really "nice" sounds as well as the filtersweeping earfuck I usually use it for.
Anyway - I got the pattern right but took another four attempts to get the right sound. In the end I am pretty pleased with it.

Some might consider me a heartless musical vampire shamelessly sucking the life from another, and they would be right. In my defence all I can say is "Piss off, I am a 44 year old father of 2, working a good job in IT and living in one of the nicest suburbs in one of the nicest cities on earth. How can someone in my sickeningly privileged position have anything to write about, except by strip mining the lives of those around me?"

In my defence all I can say is "Piss off, I am a 44 year old father of 2, working a good job in IT and living in one of the nicest suburbs in one of the nicest cities on earth. How can someone in my sickeningly privileged position have anything to write about, except by strip mining the lives of those around me?"

Now if I can just talk Mr G to become a serial killing crack addict, and to go on a nationwide rampage of death and destruction, all the while sending me blow by blow updates and audio footage of the really nasty bits, then I will get this album out in no time! :-)

So, this piece. Depressives among you will know that Winston Churchill used to refer to his depression as his "Black Dog" - I like the name, although Stephen Fry's weather analogy matches my own experience better. Anyway, I wanted to do a piece that reflects my experience of the condition and this is it - both bleak and jarring but also with a more energetic edge of rage. Someone once described depression as an inability to construct a future and that is absolutely my experience, in fact that is probably the one defining characteristic of my adult life is that I have always been unable to construct a future, to plan, to look forward. Interestingly that horrible sound (that to my ear sounds like crowds of people screaming) was actually me calmly repeating "No Future" into Virtual ANS, some copy-pasting and a little contrast added and that was the result, which is way closer to how my brain feels than the measured tones of the original recording. The Drums are DM1 using the onboard FX, bouncy bass is from Magellan which I have barely used in months, the more ambient bits are Caelestis recordings loaded back into Caelestis as samples and bouncing around in a shape. Same with the guitar sample - bounced through Caelestis. Everything else is Animoog passed through turnado and WOW. The theme then is every sound has been reprocessed a couple of times, altered with effects, reprocessed, rerecorded, reordered.

Ladies and gentlemen - I give you Black Dog.

Addendum - ooh - I almost forgot - NEWS FLASH - I used BM2 in this - to pitch shift the bassline because I forgot to save the sequence before I shut Magellan. Yes - I USED BM2! Obviously I had to wash afterwards and will never feel clean again. And it only took me an hour of swearing to figure out how to get my sample in and out again (I had to read the manual).]]>

Plenty of apps allow you to generate patterns randomly but very few allow for probability based triggering or random generation dynamically (that is to say while the app is playing rather than prior to pressing the play button)

I sweated blood over this one, I do not get on with Granular synthesis, I find it difficult to get anything more useful than sound effects with it. I tried to use Borderlands but after an hour of farting about with iTunes and playlists I found that any time I loaded one of my samples into Borderlands it crashed, after an episode of grain rage I used Grain Science, Sylo Synth (thanks Wooji!) and a tiny bit of iPulsaret. I was however influenced, once again, by the Adventures of Dave as his week on social media lurched between betrayed rage and bewildered melancholy.... and a lot of drunk. I know, this makes me a hideous emotional vampire but you have to take your inspiration where you find it.

This track stared completely different, originally it was a "let's try out Cubasis" project and also a "hmm, I wonder what I can do with Different Drummer" project. I soon fled back to Nanostudio (I love you Nanostudio) and the Different Drummer sections were consigned to the merest of bit parts. I also hacked away a whole load of pad sections, and some horrible noisy bits. Then I picked up ChordPolyPad whicj is a joy to work with and slapped in the strings from Thumbjam, liked that so I put in a bassline from iPolySix and some solid drums from DM1 thrown through VirSyn's reverb thing (which incidentally threw a wobbler and had to be rebooted..), a little mixing and a Drumjam piece and there we are... ]]> Last of the Dave trilogy!

(all of this is down to ear-fatigue after 3 hours of remixing!!) so I deleted it, remixed, remastered (3 times) in AudioMastering and uploaded again, listened, deleted, remixed and remastered and uploaded again. And here we are.

I hate it when it goes like this, some days I can do a whole track start to finish in an hour and a half... and some days...not.

I was tempted to dump the whole project but I have the RULES and sticking to the rules has seem me through a lot of trouble. The rules work. So here it is. Tell Don - version 6? 7?

Looking around on my iPad last night I found 2 tracks waiting for arranging/mixing in Loopy, 3 unfinished tracks on Nanostudio and another couple in Alchemy's 4track, also there is a track I have in Synergy Studio that needs to be copied to something else and mixed and arranged. This breaks all of my rules, I am supposed to finish things and publish them before moving on to the next project. Ho hum.

I am particularly pleased with the "string" section in the 1st 8 bars, originally this was a fairly harsh sound out of Animoog that was supposed to build to a slight scream before the main track kicked in, but I wanted to add voice-on-voice so I had two delays on there with the feedback whacked all the way up, at different speeds - I was surprised to find that as the number of voices grew the sound mellowed and came out like a string section. Anyway - this was originally an experiment in iMS-20, now I have some solid experience I am finding apps I once struggled with much more productive, but was hijacked halfway through by my experiments with Mint.io - I am the first to complain about Mint.io's UI, I don't like it, and the "Vibe" and "chord" sections are too limited in their sounds which gives the whole app a music-toy look and feel. BUT - the drum machine is bloody excellent and includes some awesome kits and the bass synth is also really good, although a little more configurability wouldn't go a miss. Net result is Mint.io is a really good drum/bass synth and is very productive to play with. There, bet you never though I would say that eh?

Remastered using AudioMastering app - still experimenting with this so not sure of the end result yet...

This is probably a bit rougher than my usual stuff, because it was done on single bus journey and while having my morning coffee at work.

Incidentally most of the synth here is PPG Wavemapper which I bought because I am a sad app addict and couldn't resist, and because PPG's cunning "no sales and no pricedrops" policy means I could get it at full price with confidence that I wouldn't be kicking myself a week later when the app dropped in price. Anyway - I really like it, very usable and good sounds, including some patches by SmiteMatter, Alex Matheu and a bunch of other people whose work I like and respect.

Ok. I was out drinking beer and offending friends last night, so this morning there was n new FAWM, and i am a bit hungover, but I did have a bunch of loops and samples We (the sock and i) created yesterday lunchtime sitting on my ipad. Then something strange happened because in about 40 minutes while drinking my coffee I managed to arrange those loops into... This. And added a couple of pad parts, and I am really happy with the result for a change.

Special mention goes to Yonac today because my very favourite part of this is that pad/synth that sounds, to my old ears, like a cross between a chorister singing and processed guitar feedback, either way I really like it and that was created by hitting the random patch button a few times.

I am fascinated by the ambiguity of this bit of rhetoric; to an NRA type this sounds like a stirring call, rallying the faithful to stand by what they believe, to an anti-gun person (pretty much the rest of the globe then) it sounds like a total bell-end having a paddy because someone is trying to take away his favorite toy. I was going to leave it stand like that and keep the ambiguity... but then I added Obama reading a list of shot kids names and the abiguity is gone.

In the end I am not American, and your internal politics are none of my business. So this week I went for a 50/50 split between bleak and angry as I have been way too chilled and upbeat recently.

The sample is from the audiobook of Altered Carbon (by Richard Morgan) and is read by Todd McLaren who did an amazing job, I recommend the book to everyone and if you like audiobooks (and I LOVE audiobooks) the Todd McLaren reading from Audible is excellent:

The geekier among you will have spotted that image is Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan, and has nothing to do with Altered Carbon whatsoever, but I wanted an image to match the track and the quote below pretty much sums up Spider's political philosophy too, but with less drugs obviously.

I fought and kicked and scratched at PPG Wavegenerator to produce a single sample that is in the mix somewhere, just so I could justify wasting $20 on the thing - it has been sitting unused since it came out - I can't say I enjoyed the experience at all. First ever outing for iMS-20 in a track I think, I have had it since April but haven't really used it, I don't get on with the interface, however extensive practice with Magellan's sequencer has made it more accessible to me and I quite enjoyed using it - expect to see it again.]]>

This was the first outing for SampleLab for me - what a great little app - really good for laying down a groove and, more importantly, the best pitch shifter I have ever used - you can shift stuff around by a whole octave without that horrible pitch-shifted-sample sound (or so I think). Also used Orphion, well, kinda, it doesn't have a quantize option and apparently my timing sucks so in the end I sampled Orphion and dragged it into Nanostudio. Also used Garageband for a bit. This was accidental: as we all know I am hopelessly prejudiced against Garageband, but Orphion will not play in the foreground while Samplelab is playing using background audio - no idea why - so I took advantage of the new BGA in Garageband and pasted the loop into there, and while it was there I added a drum and base riff.

So, no singing in this one. This is because I do not sound like Brendan Perry. It is a cross I have to bear. I don't have a bad singing voice and I can hold a note, but whenever I play it back I hate the result. This track was originally going to have a vocal line in the same vein as Black Sun by Dead can Dance... but sadly I am not equipped with the voice to carry that off. Also (and this is more of a problem) being white, 43 and middle class, I don't have much to say that can be boiled down into song lyrics without me sounding like a total wanker.]]>

Perversely I feel cheated because I like bleak depressing music, but on the plus side being less depressed makes me more productive...

Incidentally I was searching about for suitable vocal samples when I stumbled on this old 1935 documentary. Amazingly the narrator just happened to be talking at exactly 76 BPM which is what the track was recorded at - I didn't have to chop the sample at all. Been meaning to use this sample for a long time. This was a jam, I started with the vocal sample and a simple drum line in loopy, then played along adding layers in Synthecaster.
