In December 2011, the Finnish brother-duo Orion & J.Shore released their artist album "Brotherhood" on Silk Sofa. It is a pleasure for us to finally showcase a number of chillout and downtempo remixes of several standout cuts from their album. The second and final part features brilliant interpretations by Gorm Sorensen and Turismo, as well as a special new remix by Orion & J.Shore themselves.

Silk Sofa label manager Gorm Sorensen (Denmark) contributes with a soothing remix of "The Night After". Haunting pad layers and intricate piano notes introduce the track, and lush sound effects contribute to the gorgeous soundscape. Later, the guitar riff from the original emerges, while a delicate piano and ethereal choir stems combine beautifully in the delightful atmosphere.

Initially featured on the single release of "Architect's Dream", we're pleased to re-release the strong remix from Turismo (Finland). After an intro with well-structured sound effects and atmospheric elements, a number of compelling percussion elements begin to emerge. Later, energetic pad stabs provide additional texture, while the original orchestral elements float perfectly beneath.

As a special treat to this release, Orion & J.Shore remixed Goldroom's hit single "Fifteen". It starts out with gorgeous guitar riffs, lush pad layers, and subtle piano notes. Chela's beautiful vocal soon embraces the soundscape, and the supportive piano line starts to build up more energy in the background. The theme part showcases a number of lovely string lines, which in combination with the lush chorus provide a stunning zenith.

In December 2011, the Finnish brother-duo Orion & J.Shore released their artist album "Brotherhood" on Silk Sofa. It is a pleasure for us to finally showcase a number of chillout and downtempo remixes of several standout cuts from their album. The second and final part features brilliant interpretations by Gorm Sorensen and Turismo, as well as a special new remix by Orion & J.Shore themselves.

Silk Sofa label manager Gorm Sorensen (Denmark) contributes with a soothing remix of "The Night After". Haunting pad layers and intricate piano notes introduce the track, and lush sound effects contribute to the gorgeous soundscape. Later, the guitar riff from the original emerges, while a delicate piano and ethereal choir stems combine beautifully in the delightful atmosphere.

Initially featured on the single release of "Architect's Dream", we're pleased to re-release the strong remix from Turismo (Finland). After an intro with well-structured sound effects and atmospheric elements, a number of compelling percussion elements begin to emerge. Later, energetic pad stabs provide additional texture, while the original orchestral elements float perfectly beneath.

As a special treat to this release, Orion & J.Shore remixed Goldroom's hit single "Fifteen". It starts out with gorgeous guitar riffs, lush pad layers, and subtle piano notes. Chela's beautiful vocal soon embraces the soundscape, and the supportive piano line starts to build up more energy in the background. The theme part showcases a number of lovely string lines, which in combination with the lush chorus provide a stunning zenith.

The first remix comes from Australian producer Stray Theories, who contributed to Silk Sofa with his brilliant remixes of Koda's "The Last Stand" and Puremusic's "Unsaid". His remix of "Oasis" quickly establishes an unmistakably haunting atmosphere, which takes the stems from the original mix and transforms them into a truly magical soundscape. Throughout the song, the piano strokes are beautifully surrounded by tranquil pad lines and stunning sound effects.

From Finland comes Planet Boelex, who is contributing to Silk Sofa for the first time. His remix of "Nails" starts off with an intricate and well-structured breakbeat, and gorgeous textures are soon added to the mix. The elements from the original are beautifully showcased in an energetic theme part, which consists of fantastic melodic layers and strong rhythmic content.

We are proud to welcome back Finnish trio Our Stolen Theory, who showcased their talent with "Warmest Day" in 2012. For their Vocal Version of "Departed", they have added tranquil and truly memorable vocals. The vocals put a remarkable new and beautiful angle to the already intriguing original.

Silk Sofa veteran Owen Ear from Ukraine delivers a haunting remix of "White Birds". It takes off with a calm soundscape, but an unexpected turn towards a more energetic sound is hinted in the first few minutes. A strong breakbeat and bassline combination creates a mesmerizing atmosphere, which integrates beautifully with the string elements from the original mix.

In December 2011, the Finnish brother-duo Orion & J.Shore released their artist album "Brotherhood" on Silk Sofa. It is a pleasure for us to finally showcase a number of chillout and downtempo remixes of several standout cuts from their album. The first of two parts features brilliant interpretations by Stray Theories, Planet Boelex, Our Stolen Theory, and Owen Ear.

The first remix comes from Australian producer Stray Theories, who contributed to Silk Sofa with his brilliant remixes of Koda's "The Last Stand" and Puremusic's "Unsaid". His remix of "Oasis" quickly establishes an unmistakably haunting atmosphere, which takes the stems from the original mix and transforms them into a truly magical soundscape. Throughout the song, the piano strokes are beautifully surrounded by tranquil pad lines and stunning sound effects.

From Finland comes Planet Boelex, who is contributing to Silk Sofa for the first time. His remix of "Nails" starts off with an intricate and well-structured breakbeat, and gorgeous textures are soon added to the mix. The elements from the original are beautifully showcased in an energetic theme part, which consists of fantastic melodic layers and strong rhythmic content.

We are proud to welcome back Finnish trio Our Stolen Theory, who showcased their talent with "Warmest Day" in 2012. For their Vocal Version of "Departed", they have added tranquil and truly memorable vocals. The vocals put a remarkable new and beautiful angle to the already intriguing original.

This version is the "Album Reconstruction"; the original version was released on Solarstone's "Electronic Architecture 2" compilation.A mesmerizing intro quickly sets the mood: a soothing female voice, typewriter sounds, and a fading-in piano line that ends up being the song's trademark. A supporting guitar melody emerges underneath, and the addition of gorgeous strings and cello lines result in a wealth of tremendous harmonies, just as the duo is known for.The first remix comes from Owen Ear from Ukraine, who previously had success with his first EP on the label. Smooth piano lines introduce the track, soon to be accompanied by intriguing sound effects, a soft breakbeat, and lush guitar riffs. Later, a string line appears, greatly enhancing the soundscape.Turismo from Finland is a new addition to Silk Sofa. His remix starts off with a variant of the original piano melody - in higher tempo. Orion: "Rich (Solarstone) was compiling his Electronic Architecture 2 compilation and asked if we would have any ambient/chill-out tune ready. Architect's Dream was just a very nasty sounding draft at that time but Rich heard the potential and asked us to finish it. It became the closing track of Electronic Architecture 2 and got really nice reviews. The album version is slightly altered with a new piano theme, mixing and the intro vocal."

Orion: "The idea was to create something nature-themed, peaceful and beautiful, but we ended up with a track which is probably the most haunting on the whole album. The arped bells which little by little mess up the main melody and the ever-growing, murmuring bass-pad give the feeling of uneasiness. Ending the track like that was actually an accident - we were already starting to build the second part, but after listening to the second breakdown we were like 'why wouldn't we just leave it here'?."

Orion: The voice says: "deru kugi wa utareru" which means "The nail that sticks up will be hammered down". The first version sounded a bit lame, but after adding some japanese throat singing as a layer to the bottom we started to reach the ethnic touch we were hoping in the first place. But hey, doesn't any proper chill-out track need an old throat-singer, kids laughing and some Japanese guy chanting weird stuff?

Orion - Jacob Henry from Silk Recordings saw White Birds' potential right after the first listen and wanted it to be released as one of the album singles. He had a good ear - White Birds became the most successful single release of Brotherhood with really great remixes from Tom Fall & Heikki L. Armin van Buuren opened nearly all of his tour shows in Australia/Asia in Nov/Dec 2011 with Tom's remix. I think all the remixers have done amazing job with the album tracks - turning 160bpm chill-out/drum'n'bass track into a dance floor friendly proghouse/trance tune isn't one of the most straight-forward remixing tasks.

Orion: We were super excited to make a remix of "Sun" and slightly disappointed when it then finally seemed that it would not end up to the official Anjunabeats release. I kept telling myself it's no wonder - why would a trance label a release a 10 minute chill-out remix next to banging club versions of the track. Not Anjuna style at all. Therefore it was a big surprise when Allan from Anjunabeats mailed me after two weeks and asked to finish the remix asap. Orion: We were super excited to make a remix of "Sun" and slightly disappointed when it then finally seemed that it would not end up to the official Anjunabeats release. I kept telling myself it's no wonder - why would a trance label a release a 10 minute chill-out remix next to banging club versions of the track. Not Anjuna style at all. Therefore it was a big surprise when Allan from Anjunabeats mailed me after two weeks and asked to finish the remix asap. We got the live strings recorded über quick and thanks to very flexible and friendly attitude from both Niko from Slusnik Luna and Allan from Anjuna the track was finally added to our album, too.

Orion: The main inspiration for me was the eerie feeling of Gustavo Santaolalla's amazing track Iguazu (www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1cpR8H0sno). The Silk label guys said The Night After reminds them of Game of Thrones series but I can't get this wild west feeling out of my head when I listen to this. Even though most of the tracks on "Brotherhood" album include live strings and pianos, this is the only one which was combined of live instruments only. No plug-ins, synths or similar here, only digitally produced parts are a couple of effects.

Orion: Meeting Tony Colman aka London Elektricity in person in Helsinki and getting good words of the Just One Second remix we had made must be among my most memorable moments of 2011. My humblest thank-yous go to Tony and Hospital Records possé for being open-minded enough to make it possible to release a remix this much different from the original. I think making this even turned Joonas' and my studio roles upside down because I was the one demanding not to add any drum'n'bass to the end of the track. I still don't know how Joonas convinced me. I think this track ends our album pretty well - with a happy, hopeful and good-spirited mood.

Like the massive spectrum of music in my head, Finnish brothers Orion and J.Shore usually sit at opposite ends on the music production front. Juska (Orion), grew up on the early 90′s hypnotic trance sound such as Cygnus X’s album “Hypermetrical” and Sven Väth’s “The Harlequin – The Robot And The Ballet-Dancer” and for the past five years has hosted a variety of electronic music on his National Finnish Radio show. The mix includes lots of my all-time favorites, classic chill-out tracks and fresh newcomers worth hearing. It starts with ambient soundscapes, evolves to melodic downtempo, then to more rhythmic tunes and ends with Ulrich Schnauss style “big room chill-out”.

Unlike some of the earlier “From Rural To Urban” mixes, which tended to be more or less melancholic, this mix has a positive, excited and happy, hopeful vibe during the whole five and a half hours. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed compiling it.

Orion: The main inspiration for me was the eerie feeling of Gustavo Santaolalla's amazing track Iguazu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1cpR8H0sno). The Silk label guys said The Night After reminds them of Game of Thrones series but I can't get this wild west feeling out of my head when I listen to this. Even though most of the tracks on "Brotherhood" album include live strings and pianos, this is the only one which was combined of live instruments only. No plug-ins, synths or similar here, only digitally produced parts are a couple of effects.

Orion: The main inspiration for me was the eerie feeling of Gustavo Santaolalla's amazing track Iguazu (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1cpR8H0sno). The Silk label guys said The Night After reminds them of Game of Thrones series but I can't get this wild west feeling out of my head when I listen to this. Even though most of the tracks on "Brotherhood" album include live strings and pianos, this is the only one which was combined of live instruments only. No plug-ins, synths or similar here, only digitally produced parts are a couple of effects.

Orion: Massive remix was our third or fourth track we made together and the first try to bring something trancey (and nearly 140bpm) to the world of chill-out. The original version from 2004 is still one of my all-time favourite trance tracks and getting good words from Ralphie B after finishing this remix as a bootleg was super nice - let alone that Ralphie and his label finally also gave a permission for the official release. This is also the very first track in which we used arpeggiators to simulate the feeling of the original track - you can spot nearly the same arps in "Sun" remix, too.

Orion - Jacob Henry from Silk Recordings saw White Birds' potential right after the first listen and wanted it to be released as one of the album singles. He had a good ear - White Birds became the most successful single release of Brotherhood with really great remixes from Tom Fall & Heikki L. Armin van Buuren opened nearly all of his tour shows in Australia/Asia in Nov/Dec 2011 with Tom's remix. I think all the remixers have done amazing job with the album tracks - turning 160bpm chill-out/drum'n'bass track into a dance floor friendly proghouse/trance tune isn't one of the most straight-forward remixing tasks.

J.Shore: For me it's always been hard to understand the monotonic feel of electronic music - and especially hard to compose anything like it. Maybe my own taste of music has developed during this album making process because now Nails is definitely among my favorite tracks of the album. That kid laughing reminds me of the face of Richard D. James.

Orion: The voice says: "deru kugi wa utareru" which means "The nail that sticks up will be hammered down". The first version sounded a bit lame, but after adding some japanese throat singing as a layer to the bottom we started to reach the ethnic touch we were hoping in the first place. But hey, doesn't any proper chill-out track need an old throat-singer, kids laughing and some Japanese guy chanting weird stuff?

The arped bells which little by little mess up the main melody and the ever-growing, murmuring bass-pad give the feeling of uneasiness. Ending the track like that was actually an accident - we were already starting to build the second part, but after listening to the second breakdown we were like 'why wouldn't we just leave it here'?."

A year ago, Silk Sofa released an EP by the Finnish brothers Orion & J.Shore called "Goodbye Earth". Orion, a successful radio host on the Finnish national radio YleX, and his brother, J.Shore, treated us to some gorgeous chillout songs back then, and now it's time for some new interpretations of these tracks.
From France comes Eskadet, an artist who has established a well-known sound in the chillout / downtempo genre, and released numerous songs on Lemongrassmusic. For this release, Eskadet has turned "Your Highness" into his own unique style. Lush string lines are the first things we hear, and soon percussion elements, as well as an intriguing stuttered vocal effect, are added. Various synth sweeps and rhodes in the background create a stunning atmosphere, and the distinctive bassline addition later in the track contributes a spicier touch.
Finnish artist Tokyo Boulevard is another artist that has a stunning sound and a impressive résumé; multiple compilation tracks on Bonzai and well-received originals on Subtraxx, amongst others labels. For Silk Sofa, he has created both a chillout and a downtempo remix of "Deep Blue". Big ocean waves that introduce the chillout remix hint that we are indeed near a 'deep blue'. Tremendous and soothing pad layers, as well as enjoyable percussion elements, soon emerge, and as the track progresses, additional comforting layers are included. The key changes to the downtempo remix are a lovely beat, a more energetic theme part, and a fresh vocal effect, all of which provide additional texture to the track.
