This is very much a "mashup" mix like the Get Carter one earlier. Starting off with a VHS sample of Akira playing over Squarepusher that sort of informs the mix's manifesto, the idea was that we had to go backward to go forward, so the mix accelerates into drum and bass before cutting to half the tempo and building up again through breakbeat, electro and tachno, rounding off with some banging trance. Who knew?

I was lucky enough to have my inaugural dj set in Cairns last night, playing an hour for the Kool Bario guys at their BBQ BASS sunday session.

Here is a raw, live & direct recording of my efforts on the night.. If you were enjoying Spoonbill in the main arena or simply somewhere else, then here's a taste of what you could have been dancing to!

I wanted to play a party beats set that would include some old favourites, some new bangers, the odd pop remix, and some future classics, switching up the tempo to keep the energy going through dubstep, trap, EDM, reggae, hip hop, big beat, twerk, moombah, breaks, funk, soul and some drum & bass for pudding.

So I've had these tunes burning a hole in my pocket for a little bit now and wanted to do something to put them to use. I don't know if this sound has a "genre" name per se, but to me these tunes have a bit of a retro 1980s feel to them, even though they're a bit grimey from 2014- big synths, big drums, big hair. Very much a Rustie & Hud Mo influence from stables like Terrorhythm, Donky Pitch, Activia Benz, Brownswood Electric & Soulection.

This is one of those mixes that seems pretty chill, but gets harder the louder you have it turned up. Why not give those expensive headphones a proper test.. Tight 1hr runtime. some loosey goosey mixing.

Just over a decade ago, I heard Kieran Hebden’s blissful remix of The Aphex Twin on the Warp records 10th birthday compilation.

Ever since then, I’ve always made a point of searching out anything new that is released under the alias of Four Tet. Whilst his earlier albums have particularly soothing, hangover-curing properties, this year’s There Is Love In You appears to be evidence that someone’s been dosing Mr Hebden’s water supply, with the skittering fragile melodies of yore now bolstered by mellow house-tempo rhythms, fusing together to create what is without a doubt one of the best albums of the year in ANY genre. Right now, it seems that he can do no wrong, and the cream of dance music producers are lining up to work with the man.

Around that time I was involved in a Christmas mix swap, so thought it’d be appropriate to contradict the inevitable slew of toe-warming musical good cheer with a fat slab of angry, angular, stomping nastiness.
