This was a real special set for me, Bob V offered me an extended opening set, and it was my first time on a rotary mixer, so I decided to dig deep and bring out some records I haven’t played in years. The set is almost entirely vinyl, until I had to play CDs at the end to switch over for the next DJ. I took this opportunity to tell a personal story with the set; I start off with one of the first records I remember hearing as a young child, and I go through my path from Soul and R&B to Hip-Hop and Downtempo, and finally to House and Techno.

I realize listening back now that the opening songs are oddly topical and relevant. The pro-Black and anti-police lyrics in the opening tunes are as relevant today as they were in the 70’s, if not more so. The title of the opening song, Right On For The Darkness rings very true today, as do the lyrics in Inner City Blues… Music is as important as ever, and I feel honored to have been able to play such an eclectic set, revisiting my own musical history and also re-introducing songs to a crowd that may not have heard them in a while, if ever at all. Big thanks to Black Magic Disko for having me out, thanks to Eugene and the F8 crew for keeping things running smooth, the bartenders and staff for lubricating the crowd, and of course all the party people that came out early to hear me stretch out. In the early 2000's Rockstar Games (the company behind the GTA series) ran an annual contest that awarded prize money to artists in the categories Short Film, Multimedia Design, Short Fiction, and DJ Mix. I submitted this DJ mix for their 2005 contest, and I came in 2nd place! Which means a good feeling, but none of the prize money, haha! The mix was done entirely on vinyl, with a Korg Koas Pad for effects, but I wanted to do some extreme blends and 3-deck mixes (but I only had 2 decks) so I did this in a couple passes and then stitched it together in Ableton. At this time in my DJ career, I was doing a Funk / Soul night at Ruby Room and practicing scratch routines at home, so this is more of a "party mix" than the House and Techno I've been exploring more recently.

I'm posting this because I got a very nice e-mail from someone who tracked me down and asked if this mix was available for download. Apparently they've been listening to it streaming on the Rockstar site for almost 10 years now! I dug through the archives and found it, so here it is for your enjoyment. Hope you dig, it was a real blast to listen back for me, I hadn't heard this in years!
