Welcome to another edition of the Black Diamond Ear Candy experiences. Today’s musical adventure is a very, very special edition for me as it features my very favorite all time soul group The Whispers. I’ve always had an “Old Soul” so to speak and when my uncles put me onto The Whispers group years ago I was hooked for life. Sooooooo, I wanted to share on part 1 of this adventure “Let Me Put Some Whispers In Your Ear.”

As of 2019 the group The Whispers will have celebrated 54 years in the Music Industry. I will repeat that…54 years in the Music Industry!! That is a monumental accomplishment when it’s hard for groups to stay together 54 days in the current musical landscape lol. They are one of only a few "old School" groups that can boast of having over 50 years in the industry with a worldwide fan base, maintaining their vocal dominance and most of their original members.

Simply put, The Whispers are one of R&B/Soul music's most renowned, classiest, respected, beloved and consistent vocal groups. They began their legendary and timeless career in 1963. Twin brothers Walter and Wallace Scott joined with friends Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon to form a local singing group. They perfected their tight harmonies on the street corners in the Watts section of Los Angeles and in nightclubs in the in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area.

With twin brothers Walter and ‘Scotty’ Scott sharing lead vocals, the Whispers have become one of the all-time iconic groups of R&B, sharing top ten hits through three decades, and finding ways to endure with their four member lineup intact through illnesses and personal tragedies.

Along the way the group has changed their personnel a few times. Gordy Harmon was replace by Levelle Degree. Then the group lost Marcus Hutson, who passed away from illness. Marcus stopped performing with the group in 1989 due to ill health, and in 2000, when he passed on, the Whispers vowed never to replace him. And then they also lost a critical part of the group when Nicolas Caldwell passed away in January 2016.

Caldwell was one of the founding members of the 20th Century’s most trailblazing Rhythm and Blues stand-up male vocal groups, The Whispers. In 2015 they would celebrate 50 years in the Music Industry.
Mr. Caldwell was an award winning songwriter and producer, credited with the group’s most widely acclaimed ballads, “Lady”, “Say Yes”, and “Are You Going My Way”. His talents also encompassed the group’s choreography and costume design. Caldwell is truly missed as he was a very integral part of the group.
