The image I got was a massive scape where he is simply exploring. It's deep, and it could be dangerous. But, it is still captivating - like space. Using electronic and acoustic instruments, I wanted to create a experience that capitalized on this idea as well as the eccentricities of Debussy's music. This is Debussy's Galactic Gait.
We were not allowed to change notes or tempo, or to add any extra parts. These rules left a great deal of grey area, which I exploited as much as possible. I placed recorded vocals in line with each midi trigger, never adding extra notes – though I was greatly aided by the use of reverb and delay.

For this assignment, I was inspired not only by the scope of the project, but also the reactions of my fellow classmates leading up to the due date. Arranging and composing to this song was not only challenging but also forced me to be creative. I wanted to tell a story that took place in a space fighter cockpit (similar to what you find in Star Wars or Star Trek), using the eccentricities of the voices of Ensemble 109 as well as certain soundscapes and sound effects. While the title is kind of funny yet also kind of offensive, I believe it fit the project and my story nicely. This piece of music is "Suicide Mission." Special thanks to Gary's Ensemble 109 class for inspiring this composition and making it sound awesome.
With varying degrees of success, I tried many techniques that were new to me, like playing different portions of a trumpet part, doubling those parts with octaves, and piecing them together to make a synth line (the first part that enters), pitch shifting an acoustic guitar down an octave to make a faux bass line, reducing the quality of my solo vocal line for a lo-fi feel, and ending the song by reducing the bitrate of the trumpet-synth.

The name – Stachybotrys – is shared with a common house mold, a consequence of the lyrics in the single verse:
Like the mold on my shower curtain,
Neither hidden, nor addressed,
I’ll be right here where we left off,
Still thinking I know what’s best

For this project, I was given the emotimood, "your time-lapse brain." This got me thinking about what happens to your brain over time. It matures and becomes dense, filling up with ideas and motifs, per se. However, when it is born, it starts out as a hollow yet enormous box, as evidenced by the echoed drums and stick clicks. It is closed, but it is full of potential. Suddenly, the brain starts to light up, as the soft synth pad comes in. The first idea (a piano note) emerges, followed by three other similar-sounding yet very different ideas (other piano notes). The brain is intrigued by these four ideas, so it starts to repeat them. Now, it's making a pattern. It gets faster and develops rhythm. The brain pulsates with excitement on this gradual endeavor (more echoed bass drum hits). This entire mix gets gradually louder as a result. The power of this becomes overwhelming and borderline painful, as evidenced by the subtle electric guitar. At the final peak and at the right time, the brain simmers down. After what seems like 30 seconds, the brain emerges denser and sharper, as a soundscape patch graces its surface from left to right - signaling it just brought out a new idea for the world to hear. This piece may aim to serve as a representation of how far a brain has come or can go. However, just like a THX sampler primes a home theater audience, this piece also aims to prime our brains for our next ascension, whenever it may be. Hence the title, Prime Ascension.

The piece begins with a majestic opening statement utilizing wide rhythms and lush sound design to establish the idea of "magnificence". Immediately after this introduction, all of the instruments are overtaken by the beginning of a greater "collapse". Sound design in this section makes use of a heavier and more sinister soundscape, continuing to break down the initial theme using pitch automation after the initial transient of each synth. Sidechaining all of the instruments to the kick exemplifies the collapse of the tune around a single instrument (as if the piece itself is collapsing under the weight of the kick in context of the mix). The use of politically charged vocal samples at the end completely embody the assigned phrase; cut and scratched to move towards a complete sense of chaos and collapse while the textual content of the speech clearly exhibits ideas of extreme self worth and "MAGNIFICENCE".
