This was a set I played for a fundraiser on Twitch (we raised $5700 for toys for displaced kids!), and was a blast to put together. It was my first public experiment with my 808/303 live in the mix, and it shows :)

A fun journey from 105bpm to 180 and back to 90. It really become cohesive around the 25 minute mark.. have fun!

So, I decided to go back to my roots and make a mixtape like I would have circa 1990 or so. One pass, two turntables, no edits, direct-to-tape. Terrifying, really. I started playing in clubs then, and would make mixtapes to hand out to my friends. If nothing else, it educated them on my tastes, so filling the floor was a bit easier.

The mix itself is a hodgepodge of ideas. I started off with Telex and the Severed Heads mostly because I wanted to anchor into that specific time period. Both were songs that I loved back then, and played a bunch. After that, it goes sideways temporally (that Boys Noize track is only a few months old, as is the Jungle one), but I did try to stay to my old ethos of playing songs with words by bands I liked, rather than seeing all music as a faceless texture to blend together.

On the other side, I’m particularly proud of the Giorgio Moroder through Jungle Crew mix… that’s the sort of seamless, effortless blend that I’d really hope to be able to do in my 20s, and can pull off pretty much all the time now. 10000 hours and all of that.

SIDE A
Telex / Raised By Snakes
Severed Heads / Big Car
Boys Noize / XYXY
So. Much. Fun! Anyway, I'm fiddling with my mixes a bit, as we're now almost a year into lockdown, so it's time to play stuff that I normally don't. Enjoy over 3 hours of basslines and broken beats. Towards the end, I dipped into my "old favorites" crate, so stick around for some hot Tom & Jerry action.

The focus is on late 80s and early 90s club dance music, but I tend to stray a bit if the mix is interesting or the energy guides me there. So, look for PiL, Gang of Four, Cocteau Twins, and Camouflage in the mix, along with all sorts of mainstays from my time DJing at the Clubhouse in Cincy around that time. It's a blast building crates focused on my earliest dj memories. Enjoy!
