We all have that one musician that for whatever reason seems to be able to somehow connect with our internal appreciation meter, at least those of us who spend the majority of our above ground time as musically obsessed. It just comes with the territory I suppose. Like all art, it is completely subjective and neither right or wrong. It simply is, becoming another fabric of our DNA. I believe this is a universal aspect of the human condition. Twenty people you know read the same book, watch the same film or play the same record and you all enjoy it, but 2 or 3 really connect with the emotion of the piece in a deeper, more personal way. Duncan Sheik was one of mine. I can\u2019t explain why and really don\u2019t feel the need to. But I\u2019ll try. It wasn\u2019t that I considered his big hit \u201cBarely Breathing\u201d to set a new standard in the music world, or joined his fanclub. I thought it was a good commercial tune and liked it immediately when his eponymous debut came out, but that wasn\u2019t what did it for me, and rarely is. Toward the end of that album was a song called \u201cHome.\u201d Bingo! Chill bumps! It hit that spot inside we all fill with something we didn\u2019t know we were looking for. The exact feeling that happened when hearing John\u2019s \u201cEmerald City\u201d and \u201c7 Seconds (More Or Less),\u201d although Dramarama\u2019s best known tune (\u201cAnything, Anything\u201d) came very close. I\u2019ve known John for about 40 years and a few months back, out of the blue he made a point to stop by and see me while he was home in Jersey. It was during a time where I was internally battling depression and kind of feeling sorry for myself, mostly health related but also the de-evolution of culture and society. I had never told John how I felt about those 2 songs of his, but for some reason that day I did. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen him blush before, nor crack a smile that wide. It made my day and I believe his. I am so glad I did that. Ever since I heard the news about Duncan my inner radio station was obviously ready for a format change and stunting by putting his song \u201cHome\u201d on a loop that is still playing as I write this. I\u2019m still not tired of it. Part 2 is almost ready and it includes Duncan playing my request.
