I had the great fortune of working with Honey at Coyote Radio in Santa Fe, but even if we hadn’t made our acquaintance there, I firmly believe our paths would have eventually crossed somewhere along the way. Only “The Hunster” could have transformed the inner trauma turning 70 caused my fragile psyche a week or so ago back with a simple explanation, “Mike dear, all this means is you have reached Level 7, I’m so proud of you.” It’s like John Lee Hooker and Carlos Santana created “The Healer” to explain the magic this woman possesses. As the wise man known to us at the time as the New Age Charlie Manson espoused all those years ago, “Santa Fe is a magical place, Mr. Phone.”

Although a few weeks away from being able to speak properly, thanks to Honey I have entered Level 7 with a renewed commitment to continue the musical discovery path and the obliteration of dreaded and restrictive genre designations getting in the way of recommendations, exposure and absorption of a challenging and expanding musical palette. All the parts uncovered are included. Some new things from an artist I never heard of named Colin Clue, and others I have like Ryan Adams, The Jayhawks, Placebo, Kanye West, Chris Stamey, Modest Mouse, the reformed Haircut 100 (with Nick Heyward) and Jim James. The massive and beautiful “Wheels Of Fire” deluxe set from Cream yield the phase corrected recordings of “Sitting On Top Of The World” and “Politician,” a first generation mixing board Zeppelin recording from NYC in 1975 will blow you away with fidelity and musicianship and most still have no idea why Oliver Tree is perhaps the most important artist to leave the planet lately. Speaking of the mighty Zeppelin, until last week I had never heard The Long Winters version of “In The Light” or Chris Walla’s brilliant recording of “In The Evening.”

There are musical connections made from Can to Hank Snow, Firewater to Bunk Johnson and Dean Martin to Radiohead. There are tunes you’ve never heard to a few you likely know quite well, but none of that matters. What does is that if you keep your mind and ears open, you just never know what might make its way to the center of your musical soul. Just ask Scott or Mr. Lawford and if you’re lucky one day you may locate your own Honey Harris.
https://img.hearthis.at/9/2/3/_/uploads/10962480/image_track/14553598/w1200_h628_q70_ptrue_v2_m1782924270----cropped_1782924252329.jpg?m=1782924270

Mike Marrone
https://hearthis.at/mike-marrone/"}
