I really miss being able to speak properly, which is sort of a conundrum since the least favorite part of my professional life was talking into a microphone. Sometimes it was ok and I felt comfortable, but more often than not I hated the sound of my voice. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy public speaking, loved performing in the plays and bands I was in and am certainly not shy. Do not let me sing though. I love communicating with people, answering questions and have always been “that guy” … starting random conversations everywhere from supermarkets to elevators and especially record stores. I embarrass my wife and daughter and if I see a dog they will actually pretend they don’t know me. The last 6 years however, have been a constant struggle to make sure I was being understood, as the tooth loss increased I tried everything I could think of to annunciate correctly. From avoiding certain words to inventing characters (Flayler McSeesh, Art Damage, etc) and utilizing AI voices with robust audio editing, script writing and constant frustration. I never worked this way. All of those stats and information about the music (or Baseball) were in my head and if I didn’t know it, I didn’t say it. Sure there were times some advance research was required but I never used notes. No phony “radio voice.” My real name. no liner cards or tricks. It was always front of mind to talk to, not at, the listener. A radio show… never a shift. A conversation. Prior to R-EPOCH Chemo, the only words on the elimination list were drawer and temperature (Hi, Loretta). Beginning 2 months after the final session, the cancer was gone but the damage was just revealing itself. My memory was hammered but thankfully returned in bursts within the first year or so, which was very freaky. For example, standing on line at NJ DMV and having my 15 digit original drivers license number pop in my head. It had been 30 years since I lived here. Although it may come off as such, this is not a complaint. It’s an explanation. I am a very lucky man (Cotillion/Atlantic, 1970, SD 9040) and deeply grateful to be on this side of the turf.

Now the good news. I have been fitted with dentures, which are almost finished and the dentist is aware of my profession and determined that speaking and eating will not be a problem. My last fitting had my wife, the dentist, his assistant and even me amazed at the clarity of my speaking voice. I am very enthused but will still be leaving out the words drawer and temperature. Love you, Lorider. He also said that I will be able to order and devour a sub from the legendary White House Subs in Atlantic City, a ten minute ride from my house. I’ll be careful now that the waistline is down to 33, an inability to bite into anything has resulted in returning my old ass just about to my playing weight. As Monty Python taught us, always look on the bright side of life. I truly believe I have done that from the start but this is happening just as the end of my tether is approaching. On to music…

This episode contains new offerings from Ella Fitzgerald, Pink Floyd, Panda Bear, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Chris Ballew, Queens of the Stone Age, The Rolling Stones, Yard Act, Nine Inch Nails, eels, Leon Bridges, U2, Jack White, Dinosaur Jr., The Weeklings, Paul Collins, The Waterboys and Colin Clue. The library offerings include PJ Harvey, Thievery Corporation, Soft Machine, Al Green, Dave Van Ronk, Frank Sinatra, David Sylvian, Joe Cocker, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker & Stan Getz, Morphine, Radiohead, Lee Dorsey, The Shangri-Las, The Pontiac Brothers and a ton more. When I scanned the new Coldplay live album I noticed “We Never Change” was included and planned on playing it. However it was a pitiful performance not even worthy of a half assed Branson gig. It remains my favorite song ever by the band and made me a fan way back at the beginning. I still love the song, so I used the version from the first album. They should be ashamed of themselves. Thanks to all for the support.
https://img.hearthis.at/7/3/2/_/uploads/10962480/image_track/14586221/w1200_h628_q70_ptrue_v2_m1784573238----cropped_1784573228237.jpg?m=1784573238

Mike Marrone
https://hearthis.at/mike-marrone/"}
