As part of the confirmation process for my Masters research - into the production and performance tools and techniques of the Techno DJ - I submitted a short demonstration of the practice-led component... here it is.

This is a DJ Mix, but is made up entirely by original works created in 2018, a year surrounded (and inspired) by ideas of pain and mortality. Don't worry, I'm OK, but having lost my Dad, some friends, students and others there's no escaping some of the darkness, and you can hear it here.

For this mix I used the following: Play Differenly Model 1, NI Maschine, Korg Volca Beats, original works looped via CDJs and Ableton Live, modular synth rig - specifically here I used Mutable's Ears (a contact mic) and Mutable Rings (a resonator) - and a couple of delay pedals - Boss DD-500 and Line6 DL 4.

Enjoy...

This is the Kontrast mini-mix. I didn't do it that long ago, and it's a very small series thus far, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of working a lot of material and a range of styles into such a short time frame. Here I'm back mixing old vinyl alongside fresh downloads and mashing techno with Tame Impala.

Balance is not only an Australian institution, but is recognised worldwide as one of the tastemaker brands that catches artists way ahead of the curve, or celebrates the renaissance of a master. Of course the invitation to mix "Balance Selections" is not the same honour as their official releases, but it's still a worthy series and a pleasure to be included alongside such greats.

Again I tried to capture the full scope of an MC set and condense it into the hour they prescribe. It means I start out slowly and work quickly through a range of sub-genres, while trying to focus on quality programming more than anything too tricky. I still enjoy the occasional listen to this.

For the trainspotters, in the middle there somewhere is a remix of The Jezabels' "Pleasure Drive" that was the first zero Percent production to see daylight (Zero Percent is my project with Kim Moyes, and we also have a label called Here To Hell launching some time this year).

I've played at the legendary Rex Club in Paris a few times now, and it's always an incredible honour. Rex Club has an ENORMOUS sound system and a very passionate team of staff who remember you when you return, so it feels like the perfect environment to let loose. This set comes from a Thursday night closing set at "Hello", the night run by Gregory "Pepperpot" Lambert, one of the most underrated DJs around.

As I was on closing duties, I needed to keep the energy levels high and deliver loads of variety to convince the mad Parisiens to stick around and ruin their Friday. A personal highlight from this set was dropping Laurent Garnier's "The Force" to a hometown crowd. I remember a similar feeling (believe it or not!) when in 2006 I played at Sugar in Adelaide, and dropped HMC's "Phreakin'", only to see the man himself pop his head up and very humbly acknowledge the choice.

I really love the music herein and was excited to present similar on a weekly basis, but about 20 minutes into my first set I got the "can you play something with vocals?" directive from the bar manager... and needless to say I didn't think myself the man for the job. The residency lasted a week, but I still enjoy the mix and I'm glad to see that since this time the club has found a nice groove (no hard feelings - sometimes it's all about connecting the right DJ with the right audience).

I'm not sure that they provide everyone with a brief the same as me, or if they do it's interesting to hear the interpretations, (ha!) but for me it was all about delivering a listening mix, rather than a series of dancefloor bangers.
There's some super-stripped back versions of my own tracks alongside a range of listening favourites.
Enjoy!
<itunes:summary>AU Underground invited me to submit a podcast to their excellent series. I recorded it around xmas/new year 2014/2015 and then it aired soon after.

Enjoy!

At the end of 2014 I was invited to play a "legends set" at My Aeon. I'm still not sure how I feel about this kind of concept... on one hand I am very grateful for the historical interest and ongoing support from promoters and punters alike, and of course I relish the opportunity to hog the stage and be self indulgent in my selections...

...but on the other hand I'm concerned about playing the "veteran" card. I feel like I have more excitement for DJing than ever before, and still a lot to offer the listeners and dancers of various generations.

This series of 4 mixes (all recorded from the same night) demonstrates perfectly that sometimes you need to let the dancefloor decide what you'll do. I had orginally set out to play this indulgent range of slow ambient, hip hop and pop before building it into a techno crescendo across the 5-6 hours, but upon my arrival at the club I knew immediately that this wasn't gonna fly. Andrew Till, himself more a DJ veteran than me, was doing the warmup and already had the dancefloor locked into a hypnotic acid groove. (This is not a dig at Andrew, it's an acknowledgement that he, like me, is sometimes a slave to the mercy of what the dancefloor wants, and he delivered it perfectly). So I ran with that groove and it was quite a few hours before I started dipping into the classics (at least in a fashion any more retrospective than a normal night).

By the time I arrived at My Aeon and hit 'record' I'd already played my residency at Revolver, so this extended set turned the night into an absolute marathon. I hope you dig it!

I played very late one night after Jimm Edgar. The opening track is an original by me with my own weird pitched vocal about an annoying dude who used to always corner me at shows and ask for gigs while I was trying to enjoy the moment. I couldn't get the vocal right in the end, and I ended up commissioning another friend to do it instead... in the end neither track was released. I think the music is pretty great, and it was certainly getting the job done on the dancefloor, but the vocal remains a little awkward. Maybe someone will step in and get it right one day?

In any case the mix perfectly displays the sound and style of my sets at Power Station.

Enjoy! xx MC

The dawgs at Melbourne Deepcast created such an important podcast series. I remember hearing the first few and being totally impressed, and I reaaaaaally wanted to do one. The invitation to record #30 was therefore very exciting, and I tried to really fuck with the format in terms of technique, while at the same time remaining relevant to the listener. I edited the crap out of several tunes to facilitate the mix, and I think this may be the first time I ever played one of my own tunes on a published recording?

This was recorded at my Sunday morning residency at Sorry Grandma... another Michael Delany concept that kept me in the game. I used to play 5 hours every Sunday morning at a time that other clubs would close, so we enjoyed a mental energy that I embraced.

Later it was used by The Likes Of You for their podcast, and I'm glad they were organised enough to put this on record so that I can use it here.

In 2008 I was invited by Triple J to undertake a Mixup residency for a month. Sadly I only have 3 of the 4 mixes I did for the national broadcaster, but you'll get the idea of what I tried to do throughout. There's a mix of Aussie music in there alongside the newest stuff I could find at the time... with the task of hunting music made much easier than before, as I'd newly embraced digital technology, and "everybody could get everything".

It's amusing to me that 9 years later I'm playing vinyl again, not because I'm a romantic, but because there is so much crap out there now it's a way for me to focus in on some of the better stuff. Anyway, at the time it was a great feeling to have instant access to the latest releases, and these Triple J Mixup residency mixes are a good snapshot of that period from my perspective.
I had returned from a string of gigs in Europe, and was inspired by the experience and the reception. I had a thirst for the craft of DJing as an exercise in so much more than track selection, and I set out to mix quickly through a range of styles, while of course needing to keep the techno dancefloor entertained.
This became a promo CD for the night, and I'm still very proud and happy to listen to it myself :)
<itunes:summary>This mix was recorded at Nano, and again I can feel this innate sense of time and place.

In the post-Honkytonks era, an important event popped up to save me (in terms of DJ inspiration and direction). Nano started in a little Greek restaurant with a crappy sound system, but quickly grew into a bigger and better space at Miss Libertine, with a monster sound system and a loyal following. Here we hosted "minimal" artists such as Fumiya Tanaka and Monolake. Of course you can't call things "minimal" any more... thanks Beatport!

Recorded during Chinese New Year, this set was briefly interrupted by a Chinese Dragon dance (I left the announcement of the dance in the mix for historical purposes) before Tanaka took to the decks.

This mix was my heart and soul that year (2006). I spent months licensing each of the tracks and compiled and mixed one of the two discs alongside fellow resident Aram, and we saw this CD land on record store shelves around the world. It was a thrill to have someone send a photo of the cover (featuring "Billy Ray Jesus by Michael Delany, haha!) from Tokyo, or a note telling me "I'm at a lock-in at this club in Berlin and they're playing your mix". It felt like the Honkytonks message was international, and I was incredibly honoured to be a messenger.

It was also a sad time. The club closed in the days after NYE 2007 (that was one helluva party!) and we said goodbye to a legend. I hit the road that year for my first European gigs at clubs such as Watergate and Cookies in Berlin, Low Club in Madrid and others. When I returned to Melbourne it felt kind of empty, but thankfully not for long.

This mix was a promo for Honkytonks, designed to promote the sound of our Saturday night residency in an era before Soundcloud and Youtube prevailed.

Funnily I can't remember anything about the recording of this mix... in reference to earlier sets from my archive I mentioned this ability to visualise the mix as it happened... but with the success of Honkytonks came much celebration, and the good times cost me a few brain cells and made for some blurry memories. It was totally worth it, however, and we have this mix as a partial record of what happened, even though I can't tell you anything else about it.

This mix is interesting when compared to the next in my archive series... this promo was an "anything goes" journey in diversity, while the next was an official mix CD release for which the brief was "make it timeless"... so I guess between the two there's a solid record of what we were doing with the night and what I was doing with my DJing.

Matthew Dear visited Australia for the first time in the second half of that year, and he gave me nothing but support for this set. His words of encouragement set me off on a hungry quest to be warming up for all of my favourite and most inspirational artists. The additional support of Michael Delany from Honkytonks over those years helped me achieve that goal, and throughout that pursuit I developed the confidence to play anywhere and with anyone.
It aired on Triple J Mixup in 2004, but I can remember recording it one Saturday afternoon in my new house in West Melbourne after being out all night gigging. The next door neighbour was not impressed, and I had Nicole Foote from Triple J calling me to say "I really need that mix!" before her show that night.

Somehow I can remember all this while I listen... and yet I don't think it captures any of that urgency just by the selection alone.

Anyway, I hope you're enjoying this mix and the other 31 from the archives that I've scheduled for publication this month :)

This mix was recorded in my bedroom, in an apartment in Windsor (Victoria, Australia), in 2004. Isn't it incredible that we can attach the combination of these sounds to a vision of a time and place? I didn't write anything about the mix on the disc from which it was extracted, but in my mind I can recall perfectly the room in which it happened and some of what I felt when recording it. There's a snare drum from Speedy J in there that still gives me thrills when it drops.

Thanks for listening! xx MC

An excerpt of this mix was used as a promo to launch the Data On Dub Agency that was so instrumental to my development in the early days of my DJ career and became closely linked to my residency at Honkytonks. There are more mixes from Honky's to come in this series :)

I have two mixes to share from a string of dates in Perth in 2004... this is the first. It's tough and fast, and in stark contrast to the other that I'll share tomorrow. I think this party was called Assymmetric Rhythms? In any case, I remember it was incredible fun, and it was one of the first times I can remember really "playing to the crowd" in a way that was totally interactive and rewarding.
I hope you dig it!
This first mix is harder and faster than the Mike you might know now... but it's an important part of my DJ history, from my first ever residency at Fokus.
