My first time in print on a flyer. Everything was a hot mess to start, since a series of coincidentally unfortunate events meant soundgear didn't arrive till 1.5h past original planned start time, and the audience was curiously packed into the start of the night amidst their plans for doing a full circuit of visits for their beer passports. A good half-hour was dedicated towards just feeling out the right vibe and finally settling in, which made for some interesting juxtapositions that nonetheless are coherent. Crowd never truly got lively, so the whole set largely cruised along with a few waves where I just played heavier because I wanted to. For the last half-hour as everything was winding down, I paired-in my friend who kindly lent me the soundgear for multiple-mixer B2b, which asked for manual beatmatching while also trying to figure out if the second mixer-feed itself was tight. Inclusive of the startup chaos, the whole thing was a blast.

Recent months have asked for me to either be all-in or not at all, so what you get here is 6.5h of DJing at Harmonic Brewing in San Francisco on the afternoon of New Years Eve. An atmospheric river was barraging the city with rain, to the point where roads were flooded, half the city was blacked out on the way home, and the crowd was thin, but just large enough to define the vibe. The whole thing was indoors, and nobody seemed to have much reason to get out of their seats, so overall pace was cruising with occasional punctuation. Serato seems to be misanalyzing files and forcing them all to skip a quarter-beat about 8 bars in, so there's a few artifacts of that, as well as some deliberate sharp turns in vibe, in lieu of trying to steer out of places slowly. Whereas my Pioneer setups get to rely on hotcues, I don't set any of those in Serato, which biases towards playing tracks out in full. Not a bad constraint, that.

Dust kicked up, hard, that night, making for a light audience until the very tail end of those two hours. As delighted as I was to be invited into the slot I wanted most for the week (more on that in the next upload), every other set this year felt like an uphill battle -- this one, though...this was both a delight and a treat. Surprise! Playa time has left you hanging for half the week on call, wondering if you're actually going to do a repeat of 2019's delightful nighttime art tour run...nope. Surprise! Iceman and friends created a little artcar for Ashram this year! Surprise! ...you're going to give away that first and maybe only shot at playing a sunrise set this year, and live for a day with that. Surprise! You end up playing the very next day. And amidst all of that, another round of playing contrasting delight in Diplo's backyard, then against Robot Heart, and ultimately putting together three hours of simple delight that started by chasing the sunrise and ended in the sunny heart of the morning. Enjoy.

One of the groups was straight-up wearing a Pitbull cape and having a blast with it, so I went ahead and obliged...even though their second request is literally the song I hate on more than any other. 6h goes by fast, even when the subwoofer's bouncing against the concrete wall behind the booth and doubling the bass levels in that little enclave. So I did it again, this time with the further constraint of not being permitted to use the jogwheels. Everything is therefore adjusted on the fly with the platter-speed fader, though with the major assist of referencing the waveforms. Also opted not to use loops except for in realigning song structure, taking away my usual trick of exit-looping. Ended up obligating a lot more accommodation on different vocals, and more of my seldom-used trick of keeping two tracks fully in the mix at full volume by using reverb to widen one of them out and create space for the other. Nice to be able to start and end with very different renditions of the same song.

I successfully did Berlin, but didn't get to record it. Lisbon was supposed to be a wash, since I caught Covid mid-stay and all hopes of connecting with venues seemed lost, but on the very last day before I departed, a friend asked me to spin his post-conference party. So here it is, 3 hours of ad-hoc for a 200-300 person crowd until the VIP's took the helm for the night's latenight vibe So it morphs a little as it goes, but nonetheless makes for good listening. Loop button didn't work for most of the tracks, so this ended up being mostly simple, smooth, slow mixing.

Onward to a new one still, with all accordant reflection to be done in due time but not right now, while there is much good work yet to be done, and plans to be made. This ended up being a set for drawing out more of the obscure lesser-played tracks from my crate. Got fatigued enough to have a trainwreck hotswap at the end, but generally paces decently in the absence of an audience guiding where to go. I gave it my all; let that, for now, be enough.

Going through it reminded me how much I missed knowing my crate so well that I could stack tracks on top of one another with comfort and confidence, and amidst a present-melancholy, the set feels like it pretty accurately embodies the past month, both in its ability to sit with all the complexities of the immediate day, see through to what joy is yet to come, and look back to past moments when what could be experienced in the present versus what was yet to unfold proved so, so different. As with last time, people came and went, and there was only a true assembly of people during the 10:30pm peak that got super lively. Makes me miss being in an actual room and being able to build into people's joy, but also nice that it's still yet to come. Gaffed a load early on when the floor was clear, which felt like a shame since it was a great song, but seeing how there were maybe 5-10 interesting technical moments, the old maxim applies -- it ain't a mistake if you play it again.

Older House seems less concerned with that and more centered around a driving kick drum. So what I call Pure House is largely stuff that follows that principle. Granted, my grouping is sloppy sometimes, so who knows how many selections in this mix a purist ought to cast out, but it's a nice collection nonetheless. Nothing fancy in the mixing -- sometimes the best option really was just a fade-and-play.

One interesting change lately -- after going through a phase of always slow-mixing with selective EQ to sit underneath the main track, another good option has been to cut the Trim so that the volume fader can be slammed with reckless abandon and then balanced in at the right level. Simpler and yet has the same level of control that can then be fine-tuned using EQ. Not having to use the volume fader directly for balance makes it easier to do cut-tricks and other complements to the existing track.

Made for an interesting challenge that forced a lot more on-the-fly beatmatching, and Serato glitched once by jacking the main track up 3bpm and prompting a lot of adjustments across the board before I noticed that that was the issue. But end result was wonderfully heavy and a blast to roll with. Breakdown sections no longer felt too light, making it easier to just play through entire tracks without need for harmonic stacking, and while it helped to run the set around the chord wheel, it wasn't absolutely imperative. Makes it a lot easier to see why techno tracks aren't always super-heavy on their own; they get stacked so often anyway that it's better to have them light enough to keep a different loop alongside supplying the double-thump.

So I decided to see how that kind of mood could be expressed and navigated through: leaning into the dark just enough to acknowledge its genuine presence, and then knowing that it's functionally incapable of encompassing the entire experience. The set came with its wtf's, of course: just as I felt myself letting go and getting excited about what could be built next, the decks started playing in reverse and screwing up the moment that should have felt most triumphant. But that's how things go -- setback, move forward, setback, get creative. A little bit of post-set editing could have taken the whole episode out, but I left a big chunk of it in becase the chaos is part of the process. Tension, release. Reset, rebuild. Set overall feels lovely, albeit with a gaffe here or there when coming back from the bathroom or being too ambitious on a hotswapped drop. Can also probably chalk it up to fatigue by hour 7. Set began with simple environment-setting, then spent majority in artcar-type vibe, with a few pops into headliner levels. Felt like gain ran slightly hot at times, but generally as-desired. Yanked one song too aggressively, miscalculated volumes on a forward spin, but otherwise flows pretty nicely. No cuepoints, lots of live re-cues, both for practice and because it's a good skill to have: enables quick-saves if the new song's going to punch in too early, substitutes for manual looping as needed to lock into the best measure, and makes it easy to layer a texture into the existing track without fearing how it'll sit.

Open decks tend to have a lot of bangers and mash, so I chose to take it a little bit lower and treat it more like an opener set: neutralizer on the first song to define the vibe, recognizable vocals on the second to try and draw the crowd in. Then anything that struck my fancy. This is basically a reconstruction of the set based on my track history, which seems to include a track that I snuck halfway in and then replaced with something better. See if you can spot where that happens. Real-show conditions, no sense of what might be wonky on the decks. Had only one side with cuepoints and a scratchy filter knob on the other. Didn't matter, still felt like a good set and had people moving to it.

Set started with 30min of an existing playlist, and since my library was short on classic 70s funk, I ended up riding off of Rafi's stick for the majority of it before transitioning towards 126bpm Jackin' House to set up the next DJ. Made for a fun challenge, since all I had to go on was my funk history and consequent name recognition, and I was hearing tracks for the first time on precue while still running a live set. Nice thing is that since it was a playlist anyway, and the music was already so good to begin with, I could just let most of the tracks play out. Set up the incoming DJ, closing with the track I'd been itching for a chance to play all week, and then I was very much off to bed.

Includes a mixture of different textures, deliberate stackings, vocal-trades, sneakunders, pre-drop cut and returns, smooth blends, hotswaps, cooldowns, buildups, echofades, echowarps, and other cheap tricks. Longest set on record, had a blast doing it and hopefully made the gaffes work (general rule...if you notice something fade and come back, that's me living out the improviser's creed -- do it once it's a screwup, do it four times it's a move).

I had someone else pick the playlist as an exercise in song texture and flow, and put them all together as best as I could, with zero key analysis and maybe 20min beforehand to get familiar with the songs and set a few hotcues. Overall result is pretty solid. Nothing fancy in the mixing, and has a few sections that seem to be interlude-ish when they should be pushing the vibe. A few botched cuts, a few bad cues covered by playing them again. Lots of fun to do, overall, and surprised that it was only 45min in the end.

This replacement run had some really fun moments, but also has parts where the main track just didn't have enough thump to continue the vibe, especially around Ya Mama, which is also why the fade there was fail -- between having the echofade on reverb instead and the incoming track being a lot quieter, that whole section felt meh. What's funny is that when listening it on a drive down to LA, it actually grooves really nicely for the most part, making for the best mix yet.
