I think I discovered something wonderful in the last track, then worked my way forward to the beginning.

Did Elizabeth Fraser memorise her vocals by listening to Tim Buckley? Or, equally likely, was Tim Buckley's recording playing in the control booth or even in her earphones while she sang with This Mortal Coil? Everything lines up, pitch perfect and to the fraction of a second, either way.

As always, this mixtape was recorded live, in one take, from vinyl sources in my collection and is presented as it was recorded, warts and all. Or, in the case of the final track, as something a little beyond perfection, from years gone by.

There are old records in this mix, and new-ish records and everything in between. Some are a little hard to find. But all are worth tracking down, if you like what you hear. If the search links don't pan out, I have found Discogs to be a good source for old vinyl.

Soundtrack to accompany Die Büchse der Pandora (Pandora's Box) by G.W. Pabst (Germany, 1929).

====================
Pandora's Box (1929)
Die Büchse der Pandora
====================
Director Georg Wilhelm Pabst.
Writers Frank Wedekind (plays), Ladislaus Vajda.
Cinematography Günther Krampf.
With Louise Brooks, Fritz Kortner, Francis Lederer, Alice Roberts, Gustav Diessl, Daisy D'ora.
Awards None.
131 min. (restored Director's Cut)

Silent films were released with no published score. Musical accompaniment was performed live in each venue, most often an extemporaneous performance by the musician(s) timed to match the emotion and action on the screen.

In the spirit of those times, I selected existing vinyl recordings in my collection and recorded the musical score for each Act live, in one take, while the film was projected, silently. I then combined the recordings in series, starting each live recording at the beginning of each Act, to mimic the live performance of contemporary music that could be expected by the audience wherever they may have watched the film.

This soundtrack is synchronized with the Criterion DVD version of Pandora's Box, beginning at the Criterion splash screen and omitting any musical Prelude. Cue the film and soundtrack and press play on both at the same time. Every performance will be out of sync by a slightly different amount, just as it was.

The Criterion version can also be found on Hulu Plus. Turn off the sound on Hulu, set the film and the soundtrack back to the beginning then press play simultaneously and you should be good to go, synchronized within a second.
