Kwaito took musical shape in the 1980s. During those times, Bubblegum was a prominent sound in the townships, while young black South Africans were drawn more into international deep house grooves produced by British and American DJs and producers.

Bubblegum can be described as a style of music which was prominent in the townships in the 1980s which was influenced by American and European disco. With the likes of Chicco Twala and Brenda Fassie being at the forefront of the trailblazing sound.

Ultimately, Kwaito was birthed as a by-product of a fusion of UK/US house and Bubblegum music. Kwaito compositions are based on a fusion of Piano elements, on the house grooves while slowing down the tempo of the grooves to allow room for clean percussions accompanied by african indegenous melodies and vocals while maintaining the rawness and the funk of the groove.

In the early 1990s Kwaito was considered and treated as an underground sound. In fact, it is stated that during those times Kwaito artists recorded their music in bedroom studios and created casette tapes which were sold on the streets from the boot of their cars. However, in 1993 legislation was passed that made it mandatory to play local music on TV & Radio.
