Ralf Kaupenjohann, accordionist, and Markus Emanuel Zaja, clarinetist, met at the end of December for a recording session under difficult conditions - in an old airplane hangar from 1920.<br />

In 2022/5783 it was the first wartime Christmas or wartime Chanukah that we experienced. The reports of parents and grandparents seemed so distant and unreal to us for decades.... and now, still without having to pick up a gun ourselves, it's like this: we have war.<br />
<br />
At this time of year, musical pieces that mention ancient legends are common.<br />
They are ancient songs that call all the living to hope for peace - nothing less is at stake. <br />
<br />
We explored these things in improvisations over two melodies.<br />
<br />
Thus, "o heiland reiß die himmel auf," a song from the Thirty Years' War in Europe that calls for peace, and "shchedryk" from Ukraine, known in English-speaking countries as Carol of the Bells, come together.<br />
<br />
You don't have to do anything now, maybe you just want to listen.<br />
<br />

The first island provided all the material for the others. I knew I would go all the way to the Gates of Hell, and then just see what happened.... <br />
<br />
Fortunately, that summer the organ was still sufficiently tuned. However, I did use a few tricks: Block chords octavated two-handed, because of the timbres, absurd registration, completely un-liturgical, sub-bass fifth without root, so grumbling sound in the bass (10 2/3' and 8' without 16' hehehe...), following the fantasy. Individual notes seem to jump from left to right, that's just good organ building with division into C and C sharp windchest ...<br />
<br />
Everything is hand-registered, i.e. there are no preset registrations that were called up by pressing a button. The horror for "practical professional organists in community service" , haha... <br />
<br />
Somewhere it says: "Freedom of the imagination was Robert Schumann's deepest creative reason" ...<br />
<br />
And yes, I'm good with "Chekov's Gun" ....<br />

These recordings are from 1996, and the horrific impression of a new first war in Europe, in the former Yugoslavia, can definitely be heard. Mass rapes, other war crimes and the destruction of ancient cultural areas shocked the world at that time. Therefore, the intensity of the music at this point knows no mercy.<br />
<br />
The dialogue, in which Jehan appears as saviour of the world at minute 7.24 immediately thereafter, is played only with Principal 2' stops, whereby right and left hand each produce spread chords on two manuals, whose three-part harmony is then exactly reversed in the repetition ... <br />

His art was so great that even the hellhound Kerberos stopped barking. So his request was granted - but on the condition set by Hades and Persephone that he should lead the way in ascending to the upper world and not look around for Eurydice. However, not hearing the footsteps of his wife behind him, he looked around and she disappeared back into the underworld. <br />
The singer was close to the Muses and thus to the god Apollo, but not to Dionysus, the god of intoxication and debauchery-wild pageants and songs.
