Two brutal releases by Lee Humphreys himself (one of these together with Ken Dutrieue), who seemingly was also behind the label as a whole. A curious release by Max de Grote. But last but not least - the Passages EP by Somatic Responses, which shook the underground music world when it was released, ended up in everyone's fanzine top 10 chart features, and even made it onto German mainstream TV (featured in a small segment about Christoph de Babalon's DJ activities).
These releases really left a mark on the Hardcore and other scenes, so it's time to look back on this label again.

Eventually, beginning somewhen around the mid 90s, some artists began taking this approach to the extreme and producing tracks that were just a chaotic mess of noize, beats, screams, frantic 303s, shrill sounds... you got it.
This led to some of the most brutal, most mental tracks of that period. A direct assault on the sonic senses.
This is a showcase to this 90s Noizecore sound. Have fun listening. Inspired by an idea by Lars Poulussen.

This mix focuses on an often overlooked location for this sound, the city of Hamburg in Northern Germany. With labels like Fischkopf and Cross Fade Enter Tainment, and artists like Christoph De Babalon, Monoloop or Low Entropy, this city was right there when the Breakcore sound got formed.
There were of course also cross connections and collaborations between the Hamburg scene and many other parts of the world, so you will find releases by E-De Cologne (Ec8or), Alec Empire or Somatic Responses on Hamburg labels, too.
Because of this, this mix not only features Breakcore tracks made by Hamburg artists in the 90s era, but also by other producers who happened to have a release on such a label. With a special look at rare tracks, and even some tracks that were produced but left unreleased in the 90s.

With the tribute mixes, I often deal with music of an extreme and violent nature. But these two artists - Brandon Spivey and Richie Anderson - pushed the envelope even much, much farther. This is some of the most powerful, disturbing, awe-inspiring sonic creations ever made. But these two are not just pure extremists; there is plenty of experimentation, clever sound architecture, and even the rare moment of calmness. The stylistic definition of this output lies somewhere between Hard Acid, Speedcore, and Dada-ist Noize assaults. Spread over many labels and volumes, we have a large body of art here, that needs to be explored. This is some of the most powerful, disturbing, awe-inspiring sonic creations ever made. Mono Tone was for those who did not like the influx of happy, easy to please "Dance Music" elements into the emerging Hardcore scene, and also for those who were into thorough sonic exploration and experiments. The result was a reduced, brutal, relentless, violent sound, that was very smart at the same time.

Mono Tone had a huge influence on the world wide Hardcore pool of producers and fans - I'm sure labels like Fischkopf or Digital Hardcore Recordings would have sound different without the inspiration Mono Tone provided.
Maybe some of this is not as obvious anymore - as many elements of Mono Tone, such as high tempo Hardcore, guitar samples, total distortion, and so on, have become commonplace in Hardcore. But I think the spark of brilliance can still be heard - and it's still energetic, powerful, mental music.

So this is a tribute to a label that was very important but is sometimes overlooked - compared to other labels of its time - but deserves its own place in the hall of fame of hard electronic music.

I was listening to "Pressure Head - The Effects Of Pressure Pt. 2" and thought: this would be an ideal track to play to someone to introduce him to Hardcore. Later, I had the same feeling with other tracks, such as "Brandon Spivey - Reality Asylum" or "Zekt - The Last Dawn".
It's hard to say what makes a track a good "introductionary Hardcore track". One thing is the brutality of course, but other factors are also the dark mood, the outer space feel of Hardcore's Techno heritage, and the sheer experimentation and noize.
But also the use and mixture of elements, such as the use of Thrash guitars and explicit rapping.
And many other things.
So I eventually had the idea to make a mix of all those tracks with these qualities.

The second idea was this: in the past I made tribute mixes to some of the legendary Hardcore producers. But why not made a mix with many of them, and for each one using a track that I consider to be among their best, but just one, so a large number of producers get featured?

It was natural to combine these two ideas. And the result is a mix that tries to introduce Hardcore, introduce legendary producers, and feature some of their best work. Three in one, if you will.

From Planning and preparing to finishing this mix took nearly six months.
Of course I couldn't feature all Hardcore legends, and all legendary tracks, in just one mix. Maybe something for more mixes.

I was listening to "Pressure Head - The Effects Of Pressure Pt. 2" and thought: this would be an ideal track to play to someone to introduce him to Hardcore. Later, I had the same feeling with other tracks, such as "Brandon Spivey - Reality Asylum" or "Zekt - The Last Dawn".
It's hard to say what makes a track a good "introductionary Hardcore track". One thing is the brutality of course, but other factors are also the dark mood, the outer space feel of Hardcore's Techno heritage, and the sheer experimentation and noize.
But also the use and mixture of elements, such as the use of Thrash guitars and explicit rapping.
And many other things.
So I eventually had the idea to make a mix of all those tracks with these qualities.

The second idea was this: in the past I made tribute mixes to some of the legendary Hardcore producers. But why not made a mix with many of them, and for each one using a track that I consider to be among their best, but just one, so a large number of producers get featured?

It was natural to combine these two ideas. And the result is a mix that tries to introduce Hardcore, introduce legendary producers, and feature some of their best work. Three in one, if you will.

From Planning and preparing to finishing this mix took nearly six months.
Of course I couldn't feature all Hardcore legends, and all legendary tracks, in just one mix. Maybe something for more mixes.

So, what is your opinion? Which tracks would you use as introduction to people who don't know Hardcore? And which producers would you call legends?

How many different notes / tones / pitches are there in one octave? C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B? 12?
Wrong. There is an infinite amount of different pitches. It was only around the turn of the 20th century that Western scales and tunings were standardized into what is called the "12 Tone Equal Temperament". The one I mentioned at the beginning of the text with C C# D D#... that is used in almost all songs and tracks in Pop, Techno, Electronica and so on.

The equal temperament tuning means that between each half note, there is the same "distance", the same interval... C to C# is the same half tone step as D to D# in equal temperament. Before our "modern times", this was not the case. In traditional tunings, such as meantone tunings, the intervals between half tones varied, and D# was not always the same note as Eb, or F# the same as Gb.
Now let's get back to our current days. While the 12 TET is the standard tuning by now in Western music, there were always people who tried to break out of this rigid system, rebelled against it and tried to explore the "forbidden" tones and tunings inbetween the "normal" scales' notes.

One such attempt is Just Intonation. Traditionally, tunings were based on intervals with whole number frequency ratios... a traditional perfect fifth meant a ratio of 2/3, or a perfect third a ratio of 4/5, and so on. This is lost in the 12 TET tuning. Almost all intervals are detuned in modern music on the radio and elsewhere, with only the octave and unison remeaning "Just", and the perfect fifth, perfect fourth and second remeaining at least somewhat close to a whole number frequency ratio.
Both major and minor thirds, for example, are way off compared to their traditional values.
Just Intonation tries to fix this problem, and uses scales that are closer to whole number ratios regarding intervals.

Another concept is Microtuning. The idea here is to employ steps that are "smaller" than half tone steps, like quarter tones, or even smaller intervals.

Xenharmonic is a term sometimes used for the "alien" feel of music not based on the standardized scales in Western music.

Once I started producing music, I quickly came accross the problems of the equal temperament tuning, and the possibilites in music once you go outside it. An even bigger impact had "Flesh Is The Fever", an apocalyptic tale of time travel and world domination (seemingly), which helped turn around the world of Gabber, being played again and again at big Hardcore raves and being hugely influential in the move from 180+ BPM compositions in the mid-90s Netherlands to slower outings and a new style. A track that helped to spawn a whole genre. If you think that can't be topped, there was also the title track "One Night In NYC" on this 12". i started to produce acidcore myself and this is what got me "off the ground" in the hardcore scene, with the release of the acid massacre EP on black monolith.

in various ways i always tried to fuse psychedelic, prog rock, and general sonic ideas and concepts of these years into my music.
when i heard a sample of hunter s. thompson in 2016, about san franciso in the 60s, which said:

"but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world."

i felt intrigued again. it reminded me of my own days of business in the 90s psychedelic hardcore techno scene and how most of this was lost to the following generation - till now, as i see brightly in the future, and maybe something bigger and better and more exciting lies ahead.
this inspired me to do some tracks with a certain acid, psy feel again and influenced the creation of other tracks.
they are in this mix, as well as other tracks that feature a similiar theme.

"ghosts of the civil dead" is an australian movie from 1988. it is one of the only movies that takes a side with prisoners - beyond "street gang romanticism" etc. in hollywood movies - and shows how the state lives, enforces, profits from the prison system and not only uses it to keep the "prisoners" in line - but in the end the whole of the population.
it has been a source of samples for both techno, breakcore and underground tracks, and this is a minimix of tracks that use the movie as an inspiration and source.
