SUSPICIOUS STENCH
Feat Flowdan

Shutdown

Screwloose Records

Worldwide release June 10th 2013

Few MCs hold court like Flowdan. Armed with his stern spoken tenor, when he speaks YOU listen. Especially when he’s offering such a cold, crisp warning.

Few producers slap down a riddim like Stenchman and Suspect. Armed with years of bass business dating back to dubstep’s golden age, when they play YOU listen. Especially when they’re offering such a cold, paranoid lick.

Combine the two and what have you got?

Don’t tell us, we’ll tell you: an icy grime showdown primed on undiluted 808 danger. Clinical beats with razor-sharp melodic motifs, Suspicious Stench have provided the perfect bed for Flowdan’s sermon. He’s giving you a warning… And you’re witness to one of the darkest club joints of the coming summer.

Remix-wise there’s nothing but high grade bangers, each one ticking a different party box. First up, the VIP. Eschewing the untrusting minimalism of the original, the VIP adds an air of mentalist menace. Part Dutch, part tropical, all bass there’s no escape from the mischievous rattling 140 groove.

Moving up 30 notches, Screwloose co-founder LoKo takes care of the D&B chapter. Full-bodied naughtiness, it’s an all-out alien bass marathon. Highlighting just how versatile Flowdan’s vocal technique is, the turbo-tempo and terror bass compound the darkness of his delivery. Complete with cool spinback samples and an overall sound that wouldn’t have gone amiss on late 90s Ram joints, LoKo has well and truly nailed his reversion.

Finally, it’s down to Screwloose mainstays Statix to close the show. Naturally they do it in style. At first it appears to be a slinky-but-swaggering dubstep roller. Stark enough to carry the full vocals but booming enough to bang any floor, its weighty halfstep does all the driving. Then, just when you think you’ve arrived at your destination, BANG: we’re switched up to a classic rave breakbeat finale.

Shut it down. Start it up again… Suspicious Stench and Flowdan are on fire right here. And YOU better listen.

LOKO
Twisted Mechanics EP
Screwloose Records
Worldwide release May 20th 2013

Ladies, gentlemen, speaker freaks… Bristol bass boutique Screwloose are back! It’s been several months since they unleashed their last trademark wild riddims. To make up for lost time, label co-founder LoKo has put together a whopping four-track episode. Not only is it the broadest, most comprehensive showcase he’s strutted so far… We can officially confirm that every single cut is a blinder.

We kick off with ‘Smash It’. To say it lives up to its name would be an understatement. Just check that first drop and you’ll understand: a crucial second of silence seems to linger forever before a huge, hoover bass rips the groove apart, sweeping up and down the sonic spectrum. Flipping to a more syncopated, staccato riff midway, it’s a celebration of D&B in its most carnal, uncompromised form. ‘Smash It?’ Blow it up to sonic smithereens more like.

‘Dubplate’ follows with a deeper nod to the more clinical, minimal D&B ideology. Paying homage to both early Metalheadz and the more modern stripped-back steppy constructions such as Critical or IM:LTD, it’s a stark sojourn into the darkest pastures of the dancefloor.

From classical steppery we switch to a full-flavoured growler. ‘Alpha One’ is a hypnotic brew of icy pads, razor-sharp beats, a nagging croak-like bass riff and bellowing wobbles on the fills. Textured with mesmerising metallic feedback, it’s like the ghost of Hendrix has sneaked itself into LoKo’s studio and started played gremlins on his DAW.

‘Tiki’ completes the set. A collaboration with fellow Program artist Nitri, ‘Tiki’ takes us deeper than LoKo has ever gone before. Teasing with tribal tenacity, weaves of percussive layers build and fall while haunted processed vocal edits spirit their way in and out of the mix, and heartbeat subs glue rigidly to the kicks. Spooky sonics don’t get much richer or engaging.

Four cuts deep and, we’re sure you’ll agree, every single one is a blinder. Hear LoKo like you’ve never heard him before… Let’s get twisted.
Four cuts deep and, we’re sure you’ll agree, every single one is a blinder. Hear LoKo like you’ve never heard him before… Let’s get twisted.

Zanetic
Symmetry EP
Screwloose Records
Worldwide release 3rd December 2012

An international soundclash of incendiary proportions, Bristol’s Screwloose crew wrap up 2012 with a tempo-flexing five-piece from their Australian contingent Zanetic. A wide-eared wallop of dancefloor fun that embraces every shade of the bass rainbow, if you thought his Neon Black EP kicked royal booty… Wait until you press play on this next level badboy.

‘Symmetry’ is the set piece… Already championed by both Matrix & Futurebound and Fred V & Grafix on Radio 1 and 1Xtra respectively, its gritty, grizzling D&B groove screams and sizzles as former Loadstar Live front man MC Texas spits lyrical with dynamism and clarity. An unforgiving, unrelenting moment of contemporary drum & bass, it comes in three shapes and sizes… The full strength original, an instrumental for the dub-heads and a super-dark-stepper rub from PROGRAM-endorsed LoKo.

Tickling other bass tastes, the EP adventurously shoots its sonic load all over the great city of glitch. A technique he teased us with in January on his last Screwloose release, here we find Zanetic going loco over a slow-and-steady riddim with three different flavours.

‘Blow Up In 93’ is a futureproof party piece that stutters and shuffles with mechanical mischief. Complete with vibrant synth stabs, a cheeky melodic topline and laser-snapping acid, it’s guaranteed to blow any floor it’s treated to.

‘Night Or Day’ ignites with eerie eastern promise and a deep, penetrating bassline. A vocal loop creates the dancefloor call the action then BANG: in comes the swagger as a snakelike b-line wriggles and writhes uncontrollably.

And because Screwloose love you, ‘Space Crunk’ is special freebie for your ears only… Coated in slap-bass panache, it’s a funk-fizzed workout with just the right amount of darkness. With its filtered flare and house-minded tendencies it doesn’t sound dissimilar to an Ed Banger joint, but made in a seedy secluded sex cellar deep in South London.

Zanetic’s fanbase already includes the likes of Funtcase, KOAN Sound, Statix and Phaeleh… Get on this and make sure you’re on that list too.
Bassline Secret / The Shadows
Program
Worldwide release: 12th Nov 2012

Those who keep a close eye on the underground will already be well acquainted with the name LoKo. An integral part of the Bristol bass music scene LoKo has had his tracks remixed by KOAN Sound, co-founded and subsequently released intense remixes and original tracks on Screwloose Records and now gained Andy C’s approval as he joins the ranks of one of D&B’s most exciting new labels, Program.

Just one listen to ‘Bassline Secret’ and you’ll understand why Andy C has thrown his weight behind it. At once a grinding slice of modern drum & bass with a heavy nod to the nostalgic days of the Prototype Years, this is an undeniably fresh take on a classic sound. Skipping breakbeats and grinding bassline combinations sit effortlessly in the mix with each sound playing its part without overpowering the others. Here LoKo has achieved a fine balance that will make ‘Bassline Secret’ stand out from the crowd - in the club, on your iPod or blasting out of your car as you zoom down the motorway to your next D&B night!

Flip over and ‘The Shadows’ showcases LoKo’s production talent once again with a massive call-and-response bassline hook. Yet again the Bristol-based producer displays his ability to update a classic drum & bass sound with some modern studio techniques and some fresh ideas by subtly manipulating and progressing the interplay of the bass sounds throughout the tune. With a high level of attention to detail, this will undoubtedly find a place in plenty of DJs sets this winter and with his debut Program release LoKo has categorically proven himself as a artist to watch.
