At the end of the sixties, on the heights of Hollywood, a handful of singer-songwriters invented the new Californian sound in a resolutely hedonistic atmosphere. Welcome to Laurel Canyon.

A delicate scent of eucalyptus floats in the air as the classic ford mustang rolls open on this winding, shady road that keeps climbing to the top of Hollywood Hills. Laurel Canyon is a legend that winds its way to Mulholland Drive, its summit, before descending to the San Fernando Valley. A wild and unspoiled place, where it is not uncommon to catch a coyote in the headlights of his car when driving there at night. Since the golden age of cinema, stars of the seventh art such as Louise Brooks, Greta Garbo, Errol Flynn, Boris Karloff or Dean Martin have chosen this little preserved paradise, a stone's throw from Sunset Boulevard, and, since the fifties, its nightclubs, including the famous Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard or Lenny Bruce was arrested for obscenities in 1961.

At the very top of Canyon, Frank Zappa invented a music as barred as it is brilliant, Jackson was a local hero, Joni Mitchell's house became the most hype spot on the little hill, Cass Elliot, alias Mama Cass from Mamas & The Papas loved that everyone was at home to make jams, party and of course eat. It was at Cass Elliot's house that Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Monkeys, The Byrds and so many others came for backyard barbecues, The Byrds, the band that influenced The Eagles, Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac.

The Laurel Canyon neighbourhood became the centre of counter-culture activity in the late 60s and early 70s.
