“My Back Pages” is a new series of mixes presented to you by Nick Mawson & Jim Chamberlain of West Coast Music Magazine. In conjunction with the other guys on this great website, we were invited to put together a monthly mix that represented some of our favorite west coast, funk & midnight disco tracks from articles, interviews and playlists that we have featured in the magazine over the last three years.

I can’t quite remember how Jim and myself kind of fell into each other’s lives, but it seemed to happen quite naturally. And putting together the idea of a magazine back in 2015, I really didn’t have a clue where to start, but I was looking for ‘whoever was out there’ who was also interested in this incredible music that rarely had any coverage at all. I mean “hell”, when was the last time you saw a feature on Bobby Caldwell, Lee Ritenour & Arnold McCuller in any other magazine? It was a crazy notion, but definitely time to do something, rather than just let life slip by and regret not trying to have a go!

So, armed with Facebook, as my new window into the Universe, I set about looking for other worldly souls that might be interested in west coast music too…Anyone who knows me will tell you that I can’t do technology, mixes or other extra-terrestrial means of 21st technology. Indeed, I can’t wait for my daughter to get to the grand old age of 7yrs old to start running the website!

But somewhere in that Universe was Jim and he reached out, as you do on FB, and somehow I clicked all the right buttons and got through to him! A miracle in itself believe me! And from the day he said “I’d love to do an article for the magazine”, a great friendship emerged…

Jim’s first article in Issue 1 was a feature on “West Coast Duo’s”. Artists that worked together in bands that predominantly featured two great lead singers, which on most occasions the whole band was named after. Think Daryl Hall & John Oates for example. There has always been a whole band behind them, but their name is on every record sleeve that they have ever released. I immediately loved his style of writing that married his great sense of humor with a fantastic knowledge of some of the classic and rare west coast music from the 70’s & 80’s. If you get the chance, I really would recommend you go back and find that first issue of ‘West Coast Music Magazine’ (back then titled “View From The West Coast”) and check out his great article that featured some of the artists and bands in our mix like Millington, Alessi, Byrne & Barnes and many more, but there are equally plenty more in the article that we haven’t got into our debut mix, so it’s well worth checking out if you missed it first time around from our back issues selection at:
