When you read the already tried and tested ramble of a DJs passion for music or how music is their life it takes away from people like J-Slyde who well and truly embodies all that is good about his craft.

Having embraced the ever growing electronic new wave that swept through the 90s, J first put stylus to vinyl in 2003 and has never looked back. Throughout his almost 14 years behind the console he's touched on a long list of genres, having residencies across Melbourne playing everything from breaks to progressive-house, through to drum n bass and techno.

First and foremost J prides himself on being a versatile DJ, a quality that's spurred on by his deep and varied knowledge of all things musical and a trait that shines through in every performance. He's as comfortable playing an intimate warm-up club set as he is playing to sold-out festival crowds.

Co-manning the nationally respected brand Substance Sounds, and birthing the hugely successful club-night Prognosis, J has also had the honour of supporting artists such as Nick Warren, Hybrid, Henry Saiz, Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, Guy J, Apparat, Jody Wisternoff, Pig & Dan, Rennie Pilgrim, Krafty Kuts, Stanton Warriors and Lee Coombs, while being a regular guest at parties such as Darkbeat, Instinct, Doesnít Matter, Mahala and playing at festivals such as Rainbow Serpent & Summadayze, to name but a select few.

Now with production in the pipeline and a bevy of other musical projects in the works, J's passion for music is all too evident and shows no signs of waning.

MIX SYNOPSIS

I've looked up to everything that the Rework crew have done since day dot. So it goes without saying that I really wanted to do them justice when putting together this mix.

Initially when I started piecing things together I'd intended for the mix to be a straight up prog stormer, but I wasn't really feeling the inspiration. So I thought rather than resting on my laurels and playing it safe, I'd jump out of my comfort-zone and attempt to dish up something a little different. What followed was a really refreshing outing and something I immensely enjoyed putting together.

The mix itself travels through a few different styles but hones in on a percussive dubby/minimal tech-house kind of rhythm, slowly building to a peak. I've reworked a couple of the tunes and absolutely butchered the BPM of a handful of them, almost halving the speed of one in particular - but hopefully it's not too obvious. ;)

Anyway, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together. Huge thanks to the Rework crew for having me on board!

After reminiscing over Facebook with a good friend (thanks Rob!), I was reminded of this set and decided to sift through some old hard drives and locate the recording. I've adjusted the original audio file and evened out some of the sound, as the original recording's levels were all over the place. Evidently, a vinyl set in the bush, recorded via an iRiver, didn't make for optimal recording conditions.

From memory, I played on the "Reason" renegade stage on the Saturday evening just as the sun was going down. Was an entirely vinyl based set and the first time I'd played at a bush doof. A nice little trip down memory lane - I hope the tunes can bring back some memories for you!

The first offering in my "Beats" mix series. A mix of varying flavours, genres and tempos. Ambient, dubby, electronic, housey and a lot else in-between. Originally I set out to put together a purely ambient/chill mix, but it started to evolve the minute I put cursor to grid. I really enjoy the club-friendly vibe of Sasha's Involv3r remix but adore the original's lush breakdown. Clocking in at over 11 minutes I could never justify playing Sasha's remix during my usual one hour DJ sets without cutting it short, so I decided to mash the two together and adjusted the structure somewhat to make it slightly more useable.

On February 15th 2014 we celebrated our third birthday. Simon, Aaron and myself decided to put together a retrospective mix comprising of some of our favourite Prognosis tunes from the past three years. This is my third of the mix. Obviously due to the mix only being 40 minutes long this is just a small snapshot of some of my favourite tunes - but I think it does well in capturing the vibe of Prognosis. Anyway, really hope you guys enjoy it! :)
