I also listened to a LOT of Frank Zappa and even got to play with him in 1978 (I will write a post about that sometime, but it is R rated). I loved Mahavishnu Orchestra and that got me into Paco DeLucia and Flamenco music along with the Phrygian major mode! I also tried to keep up with Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour.
I didn’t grow up in a vacuum of eclectic tastes though and also listened to most of the rock at the time. I listened to a lot of southern rock and blues players like Duane Allman and Johnny Winter as well as Lynyrd Skynyrd.

**Step Outside**

*Music & Lyrics Jon Griffin*

Not a sound to be heard
Not a noise or a word
I’m alone in myself, and I’m callin’

Descending from the sky
Without a reason why
I don’t know who I am, but I’m callin’

Will anybody hear my cry
Will anybody listen
Can’t you see I’m stuck inside
No place for me to go
I need a chance to be someone
These chains around me broken
I need to step outside,
Step outside and live.

I’m walking through the trees
See the patterns in the leaves
They’re illusions lost in time, still I’m fallin’

Only in my dreams
Do I see runnin’ streams
Nothin’ ever works still I’m callin’

No one seems to care
My torture I can’t bear
A gun at my head no more callin’

Will anybody hear my cry
Will anybody listen
Can’t you see I’m stuck inside
No place for me to go
After I had some facility with the guitar I started listening to a lot, and I mean a lot, of progressive rock and fusion. My early influences were early Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, and of course ELP and Yes.
Then I went to Cuba. Everything changed. Don't ask me about 90's or 2000's music in the English world. I'll just give you a blank stare. I learned about clave... and much more.

I started playing guitar when I was 7 years old and haven’t looked back since. After I had some facility with the guitar I started listening to a lot, and I mean a lot, of progressive rock and fusion. My early influences were early Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, and of course ELP and Yes.
Then I went to Cuba. Everything changed. Don't ask me about 90's or 2000's music in the English world. I'll just give you a blank stare. I learned about clave... and much more.

The possession of the moment
I already forgot Winter

A little tune I co-wrote with Kathy Kundrat in the style of Quincy Jones The Dude.

Music: Jon Griffin
Lyrics: Cathy Kundrat & Jon Griffin
Drums & Perc. Mike Lyle & Jon Griffin

----

How many times have you been told that you just can't do it Well that lines getting’ mighty old

You say you been dreamin' bout bein’ the best at whatever it is you do. But everyone you been talkin’ with just takes a shot at you.
Don't get shot down because some clown thinks he knows what’s right for you. You've got the answers right in your hand, only you know what you can do.

CHORUS
Just Do It
Don't listen to what they say
Just Do It
Do what you gotta do anyway
Just Do It
Don't let them ask you why
Just Do It
Just do what it is you want to do, you'll be the benefactor. CHORUS
Make it your mission to be a musician, producer or director. A teacher, secretary, manager or even drive a tractor.

Again, a very rough translation, some stuff just doesn't translate.
-------------

I have a heart
That has been maimed by hope and reason
I have a heart that wakes early no matter the place
¡Ay ay ay ay ay!
This heart
Bares itself impatiently
Before your voice
Poor heart
That can't catch its sanity

I would like to be a fish
So that I could touch your fish tank with my nose
So that I could blow love bubbles everywhere, ohhhh
To stay awake all night
While soaked in you

A fish
To adorn your waist with corals
And to draw love silhouettes under the moon, ohhhh
To satisfy this madness
While soaked in you

Sing, my heart
With an essential anchor made of illusions
Dream, my heart
Be not clouded by bitterness, ay ay ay ay ay

This heart
Bares itself impatiently
Before your voice
Poor heart
That can't catch its sanity

I would like to be a fish
So that I could touch your fish tank with my nose
So that I could blow love bubbles everywhere, oohh
To stay awake all night

A fish
To adorn your waist with corals
And to draw love silhouettes under the moon, ohhhh
To satisfy this madness
While soaked in you

A night
To sink to the bottom
Face to face
Kiss by kiss
And to live
Forever
Soaked in you

I would like to be a fish
So that I could touch your fish tank with my nose
So that I could blow love bubbles everywhere, oohh
To stay awake all night
While soaked in you

A fish
To adorn your waist with hibiscus
And to draw love silhouettes under the moon, ohhhh
If you speak Spanish, you get it.

Here is the English translation.

Calm Down

I have a woman that[br]is killing me
I have a woman that[br]drives me crazy
She passes her whole[br]life always thinking
That I am cheating[br]just a little bit

I'm an easy going guy[br]dedicated to my work
And when I get home[br]I can't be left alone
It's because my woman[br]thinks I am having fun
But the truth is I work like crazy
My woman thinks that[br]I don't love her

If I pass the whole[br]day thinking of her
She is always jealous
Almost every day
And I am just a good man,[br]not into to anything bad

Oh woman!
You won't leave me alone
Because I am just a guy
Who doesn't want any problems

Oh woman!
You won't leave me alone
Because I am just a guy
Who doesn't want any problems

Oh woman!
You won't leave me alone
Because I am just a guy
Who doesn't want any problems

Oh woman!
You won't leave me alone
Because I am just a guy
They say I make you jealous
at night and in the day
and I am just a working man, look!
singing my melody,[br]I am telling you baby.

Oh woman!
You won't leave me alone

Because I am just a guy
Who doesn't want any problems
listen up, we are going[br]to put it this way
We aren't going to make any troubles
Because I am singing beautifully
and look at me I'm coming to tell you.

Oh woman!
You won't leave me alone
(you won't leave me alone baby)

Calm down, like I said
Take the bat in your hands and get over[br]here fast, and I am telling you I am coming

Ay cutting the grass in the middle (working another job)
Modern Day Troubadour
Going from town to town.
Modern day Troubadour
Wait in for the day I can settle down.
Modern day Troubadour
In decision comes my way
Really don't know if I should go.
My hearts here with you
Though the band moves on.
Last call for the evenin’, closin’ time again
Let me buy you one more for the road.
Tell me ‘bout your sorrows and I’ll help relieve your pain
Cause I can tell that you’ve been hurtin’ too.
Chorus
Misery Loves Company that’s why I’m here with you.
Together we could soak up all these blues.
Misery Loves Company and I don’t mind the misery,
as long as the company is you.
You’ve been so warm and friendly, we’ve talked away our tears.
I promise to be gentle and help you when I can.
¡recogelo!
apurate que me voy
apurate que me voy
apurate que me voy
apurate que me voy
que ya me voy caminando| pa' monte adentro...mira niño
oye y me lo llevo andando
mira como dice si señor
apurate, apurate, apurate, apurate..
que me voy caminito adentro mira..
que estoy contento con la botella
que lleva en la mano mi hermano..
y apurate que me voy,| apurate que me voy, me voy
como dice el coro
mira... que me voy , me voy, me voy
ahi, ahi, ahi, dejalo suave |y no te a pures
pero apuralo, apuralo,| apuralo, apura lo...
¡como dice!
¡sabroso!....que no |cuesta na' ni na' ...
apurate que me voy
con un roncito en la boca
dime, dime, dime, dimelo...
si no se nota pero dimelo..
apurate , apurate, pero ¡vaya!..
¡oye!...y despues no me digas que...
pa' gozar, pa' gozar, pa' gozar...
Tremondo boracherro!
Why do I love you when you treat me like you do
everybody wonders just what I see in you
Why can't I just walk out and tell you that we're through?
Cause when you finally get to lovin' me there ain't no one but you

If I had a penny for every time you cheated
If I had a nickel each time I was mistreated
If I had a dime every time you didn't care
Then honey, I'd be a multimillionaire

Why do I let you walk over me
Why can't I tell you to give me back the key
Why don't I change my number and then you couldn't call
Cause I'd rather love you now and then, then not love you at all

Chorus

Instrumental (pedal steel solo)

Why do I let break my heart in two
Why do cry each night that I'm missing you
Why do I take you back when you play around
Cause when you finally get to lovin' me I'm the richest girl in town

Chorus
