Reversion is the third track off JethRoe’s debut album titled So Be It. The pivotal concept around the song is the return of a boy who attempted to break away from home, because he had been deceived that there is life out there.
In verse 1, the character confesses that they (him and his Father) both know how far he has come, how much he has done, how many mistakes he has made for which he deserves the rightful “reward”. He continues to confess attempts to write it off or ignore the consequences but they can’t seem to get off his mind. The longer the journey, the tougher it gets and he concedes that he doesn’t have it figured out to make it o its end. Even when he thinks he has companions along this road he has chosen to tread, he knows that those are foes in friend’s impressions whose acts of kindness he cannot depend on. Eventually, he realises that it’s God he needed all this time; not just as a source of help but in the sense of developing a relationship, ultimately in the impression of a soul tie.
The chorus is sung in Lugbarati and Kakwa, both Westnile languages spoken in Arua and Koboko respectively. In the chorus, he confesses that without Him, he cannot handle.
Verse two emphasises his state of helplessness and despair in trying to fight his battles alone. He compares it to walking on a thin rope, a situation in which he will certainly fall and probably have a terrible landing because here is seemingly no one who can catch him.
In the bridge, he comes to a place where he is sanding still, reaching out for His helping hand, hoping and trusting that He is near. He chooses to remain still, figuratively siting down hoping that God will “come by” and find him. All he wants now is a closer walk with Him, a refreshing conversation with His creator that should restore the joy, peace, love and the sense of belonging.
This song is for someone who is willing to make a new start, and embrace paradoxical concepts like “backward progression”, “forward regression”, “falling upwards” or “rising downwards”.
