This Earth Day: Listen.

It is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! 50 years since our society recognized the human impact on this planet was hurtful enough that we should make a point of it and do something about that.
58 years since Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, the spark for the modern environmental movement, that warned of our anthropocentric future without the songs of spring. That the impact of humans on this planet would lead to a collapse of the network of life that surrounds us, and on the cover, to a less pleasant lived experience for us.
Today we know pesticides have decimated insect populations, just as was warned. Anyone who took a road trip 20 years ago can tell you what your windshield used to look like, and new research backs up those anecdotes. We know the noise of the human world has pushed birds out of cities and changed the pitch of their songs. We know the same to be true in the oceans.
We know there is hardly a single square inch on this planet that is truly devoid of the cacophony of humanity - free of planes overhead, of engines roaring in the distance, or guns and industry hammering away at the edges of wilderness - despite efforts to designate such places (see below).

If we hung out in the last year, before /all this/, you might have heard me remark how quiet Portland’s birds are relative to so many other places I go. I can hear the songbirds of Ohio and Hessen in my head even now. And, anecdotally, central Berlin in February has more vocal songbirds than inner Portland in summer, even with a fraction of the greenery. But, of course I’ve only been here 12 years, and do not know if that is just the local ecosystem and migration patterns, or if something else is going on. And yet,

Now, we live in a curious time where, for once, the tables have turned.
In some places, some of the people are being quiet.
In some places, you can hear the birds further than before, and in some places, some animals are venturing into territory they would not have before. A coyote literally just ran across my front lawn in broad daylight while writing this. Seriously.
And You have the unique opportunity to hear things a little more like how they used to be.
A little more how they should be.
[yes, human noise pollution and insect-bird food-chain issues are different, but the results on either end are similar enough]

So go out and listen to it. All of the sounds. One by one.
Maybe because it was just raining here in Portland your neighbor won’t be mowing their lawn. Maybe go for a walk away from the main arterials (my street, Willamette, seems as busy as ever, once again). Maybe tomorrow is better for you, but try for a weekday. Wear natural fibers that don’t crinkle so much. Light shoes. Put your phone in your pocket, on silent if you can - and take your headphones off your head/neck (seriously, this helps psychologically).
Take slow, deep breaths.
Listen for: leaves rustling more clearly than before (their register not occupied by the white noise of traffic), a neighbor’s dog a few blocks further away, those birds (the variety of songs & species), maybe you can hear insects, probably you can still hear the Interstate in the distance, but hopefully it’s not as overbearing as usual. Listen for the squirrels on tree branches. Listen for how the rain hits every surface, or how the sun bakes the earth into powder, and how the dirt breaks under your footsteps.
Listen for the sounds unique to your location within your area, that maybe nobody else has taken the time or had the opportunity to listen to before.

We may never get an opportunity like this again.

Yesterday I had the privilege of working, out in Welches (up Mt Hood) at a vacant summer home. A gated community of mossy, evergreen Cascadian acreage, beside the Sandy River. After I finished the job, I took a walk through their private forest and recorded it. You are at that link. One track, but in 3 parts of increasing silence (the last 1/3 is without walking sounds).

Lastly, some words from a pioneer in quiet places, Godon Hempton. Link to a beautiful short-doc from Nat Geo about him below. But it doesn’t mention how he started the idea of creating acoustic preserves as a part of official Wildernesses. Nor does it mention that he has lost his hearing - twice. Check BirdNote and OnBeing podcasts for those stories.

" ‘Listening’ is something different. Listening means taking all sounds in with equal value. ...Nature is as busy communicating as we are. I find places where we can listen to nature at her most natural… There is an epidemic of extinction of quiet places on the planet. There is not one natural place set aside off limits to noise pollution.
_This_ is the time to be alive. _This_ is when we will make the big decision: Will we, or will we not, fall back in love with planet Earth? “
