This was the final Farwell Party mixed at the Saint by DJ Shaun Buchanan on February 23, 1985. Shaun knew he was ill and dying and there were some moments during his performance that moved all of us to tears. It is very difficult to explain to anyone that did not live through the AIDs crisis just how much courage it took for Shaun to play this amazing 12 hours farewell performance. It is important to remember the context of how this performance was mixed when you listen to it. For example, He mixed out of Diana Ross, Remember Me, into Martinique, No Regrets and there was not a dry eye in the room. The last tracks of his performance are clearly his way of saying goodbye and farewell to all of us. I am happy that you can hear some of the applause toward the end of the performance. We all loved him and miss him dearly. He was a very kind and loving soul and like too many was sadly taken from us in the prime of his life. Today many forget just how awful the AIDs crisis was and it’s hard to believe that even today there remains no cure.
I did the best I could in attempting to get the best quality out of this precious piece of history but it was done on cassette tapes, and let’s face it, the cassette tapes are now 33 years old. I am glad that I could salvage this performance for everyone to enjoy. If anyone has a better quality of this mix on Reel to Reel, please get in touch with me.
The Saint was a magical place and I hope this performance gives those that did not get a chance to experience its magic a glimpse into what it was like to attend the famous venue.
