What follows is a journey from rock to funk to Latin grooves to breakbeat energy to disco and house, containing DNA from the 1960s to this year...
We'll be back on Christmas Eve for a final Christmas mix, followed by my Boxing Day Best of 2025.
It inspired me to pull together a mix that has something of the night about it...Something that evokes the feeling one gets from listening to Kind of Blue with the lights turned off, sipping a 15-year-old single malt. But as dawn approaches, the mood gently lifts.
I'm going to be reducing my output to one mixtape a week whilst I get on top of some controller skills and some serious music management. I will eventually be coming back with more content, but I need the space to gather together my resources to make it more sustainable.

The first stretch leans into rhythm and remix. Then the tempo slips, the mood softens, and we coast into downtempo territory: cosmic edits, smoky vocals, and gospel-tinged closing notes.
Little Miss G is off on a school camping trip, so me & Mrs G are going to take advantage of the situation and go have a little break in exotic East Sussex. We picked a dark horse and we're gonna ride it till the end"

I give you a few of my favourite country and country-adjacent tracks. Many are a celebration of life and love south of the Manson-Nixon Line, and some deal with darker subject matter, all unified by extraordinary songwriting, insane guitar playing, and/or a lot of heart.

I maintain that one has not lived until one has heard the entire extended music version of Free Bird (even better if one has cranked it up to 11 whilst doing donuts on gravel in one's Camaro). It is, perhaps, the greatest rock song ever. Or at least in the Top 5. And I give it to you here for your listening pleasure, or for the soundtrack to your next bar fight or high speed car chase...

You're welcome.

I hope you enjoy and have a great week.
The thing I like about this mix is how most of these tunes were released only in the past few years, demonstrating that disco may fade in and out of the popular consciousness, but never really dies, finding renewed vitality with new generations of producers and artists (even if we do call it 'House' nowadays).
All 2025 releases (as usual some are remixes/reimaginings of older songs) a bit of Afro House, a bit of disco. And it gets really Italian in the second half for some reason; not by design, just a serendipitous delight.

Most of these are from places other than my usual Bandcamp digging, but you will find a few of these tunes on Bandcamp.

I hope you enjoy and have a great week ahead.

I was recently lamenting in a comment to Daddy DeFunk ( https://www.mixcloud.com/todd-taylor2/ ) that there is hardly any classic rock being played on this side of the Atlantic, unlike in the US where one is saturated with it.

It's easy to dismiss it as overplayed boomer bait, but you can't take away the fact that there were some genuinely fine butt-rocking tracks released from the late 60s to the 80s. And because we're not steeped in it here, a little dose is always refreshing.

This mix leans into the more metal side of the equation with a few tracks stretching into the 90s and the early noughties.

Perfect music to crank up to 11 in your muscle car whilst being chased by the cops at high speeds. (Not that I...ahem...speak from experience...)

I hope this one rocks your butt.

I was looking for a clean sounding edit for 'Family Affair' when I discovered that there is a new docupic on Sly Stone - Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) - and an accompanying soundtrack, which I bought immediately. 'Family Affair' didn't make it to this mix because I just love today's first track so much, and knew I had to play it!

This one started out as one of my typical Latin House sets, but the Brasileiros just elbowed their way in and chased off the salseros, so although we start off in the Caribbean, we end up in Brazil for a good part of the mix. Some of it sitting in the jazzier side of Brazilian sounds.

(And the cat has been at the caipirinhas again, so excuse how he's holding the surdo!)

I hope you enjoy, and have a great week ahead.

As usual we have an assortment of tracks released this year on Bandcamp. With a couple tracks of special note.

Track 2 is a track by Little Miss G's older sister, Big Miss G aka Mëi. She was once described by Mixmag as a damaged Lana del Rey. She has had a bit of play on Spotify, and enjoyed a little bit of a profile in lo-fi a few years ago. This is her first Bandcamp single, and I hope to see more.

Track 11 is by a friend of the family. He is a truly talented singer/musician/composer and his latest solo album is out now on Bandcamp. It's a well-crafted, solid album combining the best of 70s prog rock with a modern Radiohead aesthetic and the quirky Englishness of XTC, and his vocals are amazing. (I'm not sure he'll appreciate that description, or me mixing him in over a house beat, but we won't tell him...)

I hope you enjoy both tracks (and the rest!) as much as I do.

Have a great week!

I once made the acquaintance of the vocalist for today's first track on an East End pub crawl (one of my buddies knew his missus). It was fortuitous, as the album was one of my and the future Mrs G's favourite albums at the time. We ended up hanging out and staying up late talking music.

Future Mrs G was at home and worried sick about me (I was an absolute nightmare!). He autographed, on the back of an LP, an apology to the long-suffering Mrs G for keeping me out late. Class...

The album still holds up rather well, more than 25 years later.

The rest of the mix is a melange of various groovy sounds from around the world. Mostly Latin American, with psychedelic and dub accents thrown in.

I hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!

This was a swap mix I did on my friend Pe's Mixcloud channel (https://www.mixcloud.com/pedupre/)

Thanks to Pe for, once again, suggesting a swap-around of shows. (I hope he's not regretting this one!)

For most, Beavis and Butthead was either wry satire or televised idiocy. For my friends and I, it was documentary, mirroring many of our observational teenage gruntings whilst watching music videos.

Case in point:
Upon my first viewing of the video for the opening track, I was completely captivated by Madonna's succubine writhing. I said to my friend: 'Whoa!...Uhhhh...huh-huh...This chick is going to be big! Huh-huh...'

He replied: 'Heh-heh...No way man, this sucks! But she's hot. Heh-heh.'

The rest is (ancient) history.

This mix is not all dance, but most of them are extended, and knowing that Pe is a cinephile, he will appreciate a few soundtrack songs from some of the greatest films American cinema has ever made, such as Valley Girl, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Sean Penn's finest performance), The Lost Boys, and Fame.

Enjoy!

We have a nice mix of new and classic tunes, and a couple of classic tunes remixed, and all of these, to one degree or another, have a joyful edge to them that make me want to get up and dance.

Just what it says on the tin: a few different flavours of Jazzy, Funky, Latin (mostly with a Brasileiro accent), Soulful music.

I hope this mix makes you want to do your most energetic Snoopy dancing as it does me.

Have a great weekend!

Doing it to you old school today (mostly) with a few newer tunes thrown in. I think I managed to edit out all of the naughty words, so if I missed any, my apologies.

Our first tune comes from a unique offering from DJ Bacon, where the rap tracks from an entire classic Cypress Hill album are mixed into samples from classic Miles Davis tracks. A true work of disturbed genius. It's definitely a fun listen, and fun to try to identify which song the sample came from.

I hope you enjoy. Thanks for listening.

Most of these can be found on Bandcamp, but there are a few from other places.

Definitely leaning into the jazz-funk on this one, but we have a few other flavours, such as brass band. And we start off with a batucada-ish remix by our friend Dave Lyn of Music Without Labels ( https://www.mixcloud.com/Getthis22/ ), and if you don't listen to his shows regularly, you are missing out on some wonderful ear candy.

Staying a bit on the mellow side for this one.

When Little Miss G started learning to play cello, I used the first musician on today's roster to show her what cello could sound like outside of an orchestra. Little Miss G soon built most of her Spotify preferences around Zoë Keating so that at any given time she is likely to be listening to Dark Cello [who knew that was a genre?] or Intense Classical Music.

And now she really, really wants to wear a cloak. What hath I wrought??

Most of the rest of this is a bit more laidback downtempo and jazzy goodness, with a couple of forays into slightly funkier realms. It has some dark moments and some bright moments.

And I challenge you not to smile on the penultimate song...

I hope you enjoy and have a great week ahead.
And we do bring you a wider variety of beats (not beets) throughout the rest of this. And a lot of bass, too.
Hat tip to Guido for turning me on to Rhythm Scholar, as there are a couple mixes from him on here.
And we do bring you a wider variety of beats (not beets) throughout the rest of this. And a lot of bass, too.

Hat tip to Guido for turning me on to Rhythm Scholar, as there are a couple mixes from him on here.

I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed putting it together (and listening back myself - this is my go-to driving mix at the moment!).

Have a great weekend.
Roy Ayers was playing that night. 'Hey, I know who he is! Let's check it out...' I recall saying in my very drunken state. My boss at the time knew the guys at the door so they let us in.

I am heading out of the loo at one point and run into a couple of older American guys chatting and immediately say 'Hi'. They asked what I was doing there. I said I was there to see Roy Ayers. 'Oh yeah? Who's he?' one of them asks.

I slurred about him being a legend of a monster vibes player. After a small chat about where we were all from, we amicably parted ways in anticipation of the coming set.

The emcee came out, introduced Roy Ayers. At that, the chap I spoke to earlier comes running out, slaps me on the back amiably, points at me in recognition and laughs. He continues running up to the stage and starts performing.

RIP, sir.

The opening tune was still doing the rounds when I first started courting Mrs G back in the late 90s, and it takes me right back to being that cocky nutjob fresh out of the US Navy, and Sunday lie-ins followed by either a breakfast or a lunch at the SE22 pub. And being young, dumb, and full of...er...you get the picture...

The rest of the mix gives us some new tunes, some old tunes in new clothes, and some old tunes, with varying degrees of soulful disco houseyness.

(And RIP Andy Williams aka Yam Who? aka Qwestlife; I only recently became acquainted with his work. He was a genius at giving disco a fresh and contemporary feel.)

I hope you enjoy and have a great week!
