Jacob Miller (1952–1980) was one of Jamaica's most charismatic and influential reggae singers. Often nicknamed "Killer," he is best remembered as the lead singer of the band Inner Circle and for his distinct, powerful vibrato. He began his career at just 13 years old, recording for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at the legendary Studio One. In the mid-1970s, he collaborated with producer Augustus Pablo. Pioneers like Torch and his crew Advanced Chemistry laid the foundation here by adapting the American "Each One Teach One" philosophy and proving with tracks like "Fremd im eigenen Land" (1992) that the German language was suitable for political and social statements. Stuttgart, through artists like Freundeskreis and Massive Töne, established a more soulful, conscious rap style. In the north, Hamburg, with artists like Absolute Beginner, Fünf Sterne deluxe, and the Eimsbush label, developed a relaxed, rhyme-savvy "digger" attitude that finally broke into the mainstream with the 1998 album Bambule. Frankfurt am Main, on the other hand, brought a harder, more confrontational edge through the Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt, while in Berlin, platforms like the Royal Bunker emerged at the end of the decade. There, a raw underground sound formed around artists like Kool Savas, laying the foundation for the aggressive street rap boom of the 2000s. This regional diversity led to German rap rising from a niche phenomenon to a dominant force in the German charts by the end of the 1990s.

Cocoa Tea (born Colvin George Scott, September 3, 1959) was a legendary Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer known for his smooth tenor vocals and socially conscious lyrics. He emerged in the early 1980s, gaining his stage name from his affinity for "cocoa tea" (Jamaican hot chocolate). His first major hits included "Rocking Dolly" and "I Lost My Sonia" (1983). A devout Rastafarian since 1985, his music often addressed global issues. Notable tracks include "Rikers Island" (addressing the prison system) and the controversial "Oil Ting" and "No Blood For Oil," which were banned in some regions for their commentary on the Gulf War.

Vaughn Benjamin (August 13, 1969 – November 4, 2019) was a legendary reggae artist known for his prolific output, deeply intellectual lyrics, and spiritual presence. In 1989, Vaughn and his brother Ron Benjamin formed Midnite in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The band became a cornerstone of modern roots reggae, known for its "naked and raw" sound and meditative, hours-long live performances. In 2015, the band transitioned into Akae Beka, a name taken from the Book of Enoch. Vaughn continued his prolific career under this name until his death. Throughout his career, he released over 70 original albums and recorded more than 1,500 songs, often without pre-written lyrics. Vaughn’s lyrics covered a vast range of subjects, including Rastafari spirituality, social commentary, political issues, economics, agriculture, and sacred geometry. He was noted for his ethereal, chanted vocals that many described as "spiritual" or "ancestral". Often referred to as "The Teacher" or a "Modern Day Prophet," he is widely considered one of the most influential figures in contemporary roots reggae.

Joseph Hill (1949–2006) was the charismatic lead singer, primary songwriter, and founder of the legendary Jamaican roots reggae band Culture. Founded in 1976 as a vocal harmony trio, originally named the African Disciples consisting of Joseph Hill (lead vocals), his cousin Albert "Ralph" Walker, and Roy "Kenneth" Dayes. They gained international fame working with Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson (The Mighty Two) and later with Sonia Pottinger. Their 1977 debut album, "Two Sevens Clash," is considered a roots reggae masterpiece. It predicted an apocalypse on July 7, 1977, and became a massive hit in both Jamaica and the UK, significantly influencing the burgeoning punk rock scene. Known for his distinctive "piercing" voice and lyrics focused on Rastafarian values, social justice, and Jamaican history. Hill wrote and recorded approximately 30 albums with the group and was posthumously honored for his contributions to music by the Jamaican government and remains revered as a cornerstone of the "golden age" of reggae.

Sly & Robbie, consisting of Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass), were the most influential rhythm section and production duo in Jamaican music history. Known as the "Riddim Twins," they defined the sound of reggae, dub, and dancehall for over four decades. They are estimated to have played on or produced over 200,000 tracks. In 1978, they founded their own label, Taxi Records, which produced hits for artists like Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, and Beenie Man. Beyond reggae, they were world-class session musicians for international stars, including Grace Jones (notably on the albums Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing), Bob Dylan (on Infidels), Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, and The Rolling Stones. They were pioneers in transitioning reggae from traditional "roots" to the digital "80s sound," integrating electronic drums and synthesizers. They won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1999 for Friends and received numerous nominations throughout their career.
<itunes:summary>Sly & Robbie, consisting of Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass), were the most influential rhythm section and production duo in Jamaican music history.
