March At Sea

She was a red headed girl
In a colourless world
Abroad on the seven seas
She was the salt in my eye
And a stab to my thigh
Alas March at sea

And she was part of the mystery
Yes she was part of the mystery

He made his last stand
With a blade in his hand
Against profligate princes and popes
And he held his head high
With our dreams in his eyes
As they lead him away from all hope

And he was out making his story
He was out making his story
Yes he was out making his story
Chorus

So come on you ravers
You blatherskites and pikes
Come gather marauders
She's sailing tonight
On the first slackened tide
We’ll be far out of sight
At last March at sea

It was in the bawd’s house
That she made the trade faire
Though not one of them ere knew her name
Or that the setting of the suns
Was the colour of her mane
Alas March at sea
March At Sea

She was a red headed girl
In a colourless world
Abroad on the seven seas
She was the salt in my eye
And a stab to my thigh
Alas March at sea

And she was part of the mystery
Yes she was part of the mystery

He made his last stand
With a blade in his hand
Against profligate princes and popes
And he held his head high
With our dreams in his eyes
As they lead him away from all hope

And he was out making his story
He was out making his story
Yes he was out making his story

Chorus

So come on you ravers
You blatherskites and pikes
Come gather marauders
She's sailing tonight
On the first slackened tide
We’ll be far out of sight
At last March at sea

It was in the bawd’s house
That she made the trade faire
Though not one of them ere knew her name
Or that the setting of the suns
Was the colour of her mane
Alas March at sea

And it was part of the mysteries
Yes it was part of the mysteries
It was all part of the mysteries
It was all part of the mysteries

When it’s time to fall
Arcing ‘cross a sky
Coming from on high
Gravity’s rainbow
If I leave__if I fly__out the window into the night
Whose arms are gonna hold you__whose heart__ will beat against your breast?

If I run__into those wild wild trees__if I find something to set my me free
Whose lips are going to taste you__replace me in your dreams?
I can’t go_________________Leave this nest
Like a baby bird___________ I ain’t ready yet
If I fall__a swift descent__from steeple spires unto the bitter end
Who else will ever love you__like I did?
I can’t go_________________Leave this nest
Like a baby bird___________ I ain’t ready yet
When dark clouds gather__above my head__who is gonna save me
Who else will hold me__when all is spent?
Railroad Man

I've been rolling like a railroad man
Driving these spikes across the whole wide land
I've been rolling like a railroad man
Driving these spikes across this whole wide land
I've been riding the rails
From coast to coast
Coming on like some Casey Jones
And I've been rolling like a railroad man
Driving these spikes across the whole wide land

I've been living like a rich white man
I drive my spike into everyone
And I've been
I've been living like a rich white man
I drive my spike into everyone
I can bleed the poor
It is my right
We call it freedom
In the deep dark night
And I've been
I've been living like a rich white man
I drive my spike into everyone

I've been moving like an Everyman
I drive my spike into every woman
I've been moving like an Everyman
I drive my spike into every woman
Now if there's some concern
How I was born
You got to blame it
On the chromosome
Oh yeah
I've been moving like an Everyman
Down (In Mexico)

Way down south of nowhere
In a place that no one goes
There’s a little dirt cantina called
El Muerte del Amour
They serve Mescal from the counter
And Corona’s from the steam
And there's a chilli on the hotplate
That will burn you in your dreams
And there’s a smoking Señorita
With lips of pepper red
She can take you up to heaven
But she’ll leave you lying dead
Yeah! It’s the place
We all want to go
When we're down
In Mexico

Two inch short of seven foot tall
And half a barn door wide
He had iron in his fist held tight
And murder in his eye
Well I guess he thought he owned her
Thought he could take my kind
So he closed the gap between us
Before he dropped - to my smoking nine
I grabbed her hand! Led her running
Through the door out to my ride
We were crossing on the border
Fore the sun began to rise
And it is a place
We all want to go
When we're down
In Mexico

We holed up in Tulsa
For a while there life was sweet
I was living on her loving
She gave me all I could eat
Then one night when I was working
She was lonely, called her ma
It didn’t take the trouble long
To find out where we were
They came out of the darkness
They rose up like holy death
She fell into their funeral fire
I escaped by a bare hairs breadth
And it's place
We all want to go
When we're down
In Mexico
And if you see
In your minds eye
The sun
If you hear
If you see
If you feel it
Then you know
The mind of God

Death By Water

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
Entering the whirlpool.
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.
IN THE HOLLOW

Now that you've come to the end of your rope
Neath the old Hickory, down by the fork
And the last of your light, dies on your thigh

In the hollow
In the hollow

You carried a cross, you exercised will
You carried a gun, you killed and you killed
Then buried yourself in the women you felled

In the hollow
In the hollow

And stones in the road can break your toes
But the stones in your soul make you hollow
Once in a Blue Moon

I climbed way up to the top of that tree
And rowed a boat down a dark moonlit stream
Ripped off my clothes and dived into the lagoon, with you
But that was once, in a blue moon
Once, in a blue moon

I disagreed with the man on the news
Bertrand Russell said it best and I approve
You can lie to tyrants but I must not bend the knee, even to you
Not even once, in a blue moon
Once, in a blue moon

Cause when it's shining, it's constant lightening
The bolts come true, down to you
Always once, in a blue moon
Once in a blue moon

Caught myself thinking and that couldn't be good
So I took myself off for a talk in the woods
Lost all my flesh and then restarted the truth, with you
This song was written for the Pat Pattison Songwriting Coursera. It was also written in response to my wife, asking me when I was with Flu, what music I would like at my funeral (Yes! She is the sensitive type!). I said, "Take Me Home" by Tom Waits and sung by Crystal Gayle. She said they would likely not have that song licensed for use at the crematorium. Thereupon, I decided to write my own Elegy. This version is a more refined version of the week 5 original, cast in a different key of Bb and with some subtle differences in delivery. I have deliberately retained some breath and mic noise to give a live quality to the recording.
Guitar - Walden B1E Baritone(di) and Rode NT2A microphone both through Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 and recorded with Logic Pro X on an iMac.

In time, when I have mastered the Hammond B3 in Logic Pro X I will offer a somewhat different version of this tune!

By and By

(verse)
When I go
Down the river
Will you wait,
By the waterside?
When I go
To my redeemer
Will you forgive me
(refrain)
By and by?

(verse)
Will you fold me
In my linen;
Leave a silver dollar
In my hand?
So I can buy me
Buy me a ferry man
To carry me over
(refrain)
By and by?

(chorus)
By and by - your pain will lessen
By and by - your tears will dry
By and by - my soul will settle
If you forgive me - by and by
If you forgive me - by and by
Anna Liffey

Through my fingers Anna Liffey
And in my palms you flowed
Again on a night in the Temple Bar
That night the Wren’s song died

The days were short, when we first joined
And wind blew cold, ‘tween the piers
That night that the Wren’s song died
A frost fell white, on the homeward bound
And stars winked cool and slyly
When I lifted your eyes, to my desire
So the solstice moon did rise

Through my fingers Anna Liffey
And in my palms you flowed
Again on a night in the Temple Bar
That night that the Wren’s song died

As the crossroads met, and we last fumbled
Then the dawn light shone anew
Why I raised my hat, and for all my life
Canst not say why I bid adieu

Through my fingers Anna Liffey
And in my palms you flowed
Again on a night in the Temple Bar
That night that the Wren’s song died

I last raised my bat on St Stephens nacht
As I met the Wren sat on the wall
So I boxed this boys soul up under my arm
And set off for silver and gold
A frost fell white, on the homeward bound
And stars winked cool and slyly
When I lifted your eyes, to my desire
So the solstice moon did rise

Through my fingers Anna Liffey
And in my palms you flowed
Again on a night in the Temple Bar
That night that the Wren’s song died

As the crossroads met, and we last fumbled
Then the dawn light shone anew
Why I raised my hat, and for all my life
Canst not say why I bid adieu
Through my fingers Anna Liffey
And in my palms you flowed
Again on a night in the Temple Bar

I last raised my bat on St Stephens nacht
As I met the Wren sat on the wall
So I boxed this boys soul up under my arm
And set off for silver and gold
Anna Liffey

Through my fingers Anna Liffey
And in my palms you flowed
Again on a night in the Temple Bar
That night the Wren’s song died

The days were short, when we first joined
And wind blew cold, ‘tween the piers
Where I raised my hand beneath your skirts
Flesh hot as the sun's own fires

Through my fingers, Anna Liffey
And in my palms you flowed
Again on a night in the Temple Bar
That night that the Wren’s song died
Pharos Light

The last of the drifters and keelers made the rise
And the foremost of the trawler men departed on the tide
We will see their like again along the muddy Wyre
They are just songs now.... for this lyre

And the Pharos Light still shines so bright
Guiding all those windblown souls safely home tonight
And the Pharos light reminds us nothings ever free
In this fleeting life... flowing... flowing to the sea.

Mothers, wives and daughters once gathered on the quay
Nothing now but whispers and shadows in the breeze
And we will never see their like again against the shining sea
But we’ll recall them as we sing

And the Pharos Light still shines so bright
Guiding all those windblown souls safely home tonight
And the Pharos light reminds us nothing’s ever free
In this fleeting life flowing... flowing... to the sea.

Oh! men of the Michael Griffith* the Goth* the Hildina*
Oh! the boys of the Fleetwood Lady* she waltzed into the bay
We will never see their like again on this or any other day
But we'll remember them as we play
They have their delusions these fools that I meet
On the road as I'm coming to you
Killing gods on the road home to you
And I'm coming on home
I'm on the road and I'm coming to you

Theres no illusion
In the love I find in you
Wherein all delusion
Becomes self evident
And true
Killing gods on the road home to you
And I'm coming on home
I'm on the road and I'm coming to you

Theres no illusion
In the love I find in you
Wherein all delusion
Becomes self evident
And true
And theres nothing left for me to do
I'm on the road and I'm coming to you
I'm coming on home
I'm on the road and I'm coming on home to you.
Siddhartha

I have my illusions
I have my illusions of love
I have my illusions of love and of you
But theres nothing left for me to do
I'm on the road and I'm coming to you
I'm coming on home
I'm on the road and I'm coming to you

They have their delusions
They have their delusions these fools
They have their delusions these fools that I meet
On the road as I'm coming to you
Killing gods on the road home to you
And I'm coming on home
I'm on the road and I'm coming to you

Theres no illusion
In the love I find in you
Wherein all delusion
Becomes self evident
And true
And theres nothing left for me to do
I'm on the road and I'm coming to you
I'm coming on home
I'm on the road and I'm coming on home to you.

Recorded this song in a two mic, one take sort of way. I will probably revisit this for a better performance over time. Until then I thought I would share this raw as it were.

Guitar: Unnar (Walden Baritone) tuned C, F, A*, D*, G, C through an AKG C1000S
Vocal: Rode NT2A

Thanksgiving

I came down from Detroit
I walked there were no cars
I could have hitched a ride
On a passing Thunderbird
But the Chief said, "It's not time"
"The chains they wear are too tight."
So we waited through the days
Made our move at night

There are unresolved conflicts
Over words and territories
It's a curse upon those tribes
The ones with faith compelling
So nothing ever grows
Bar the list of dying
And the song their children sing
Indistinguishable from screaming

She was the one who cut my hair
My very own Delilah
She cast me to the wind
And through her I expanded
Oh! How our children grow
Like a river ever flowing
They generate their light
Over pebbles, overflowing
