But it was pressed as promo-only, vinyl-only 12", presumably for radio stations, under the title 'Penthouse/Omni Magazine College Rock Concert’.

I have no idea how many copies were pressed and/or sent to radio, but it's an ultra rare item of OB in their early days.

Pros and cons with the original recording-

It sounds not good. Not disastrous, but there's a whole lot of room for improvement. It sounds thin and tinny. Like you're listening to it on some old, 80s style walkman earphones. There's a version on YT if you want to hear the original, but why would you when my version is now available?

But it also has lots of stuff going for it-

It's well recorded with no distortion, it's in stereo, they didn't ruin it in editing, and it's mixed well enough where I can put it through my system and make it sound like a proper live album. Now, this version, the one I fixed up, sounds like a million bucks.

The webcast was fed in mono, which is a bummer. But I put a reverb on it that has a frequency dependent spread to it, so that gives a little bit of a stereo air to it. All the crowd sounds I grabbed from other recordings. They're not fake; they're just not original to this performance.]]>

It had a very weak low end and sounded just kinda lifeless, like it had no spark in it at all.

So then I fixed it- pumped some low end back into it, brought some excitement back to the overall sound, did some trickery with the phase and the panning, beefed up the audience sounds a bit.

And this is not to mention LA's long-running industrial club Das Bunker, still going strong, but quite frankly is a whole lot less underground than those others I mentioned. Although Franck and company still will have some good live acts play their hallowed halls every now and then.

This Richard Devine show was actually not a proper concert; it was a private party for about 15 or 20 people. I don't remember why Richard was in town, or if he played some other show that weekend. Honestly, I don't even know how I was invited to this one, except that iComplex head honcho Whoman is a super nice guy who thought I should be there I guess.

I think what happened was this-

Ché Café is just a small room on the campus of UC San Diego, and is student-run. At the time of this recording (I think they've since closed down), they had some very old equipment, and the main mixing board didn't have any way for me to record except to use the headphone jack. It had no RCA outs, no 1/8" group outs, no XLR outs, no nothing except some outputs to get the signal to the main PA speakers. That's not ideal, but I've used the headphone jack plenty of times before and I can get perfectly useable audio that way, but I would never do that without asking the person mixing the show if it was OK if I took that output, meaning that the mix engineer wouldn't be able to listen on headphones.

So, that's what I did, and no doubt the mixer guy said 'ya, no problem, I won't need headphones, I'll just listen to the PA.'

And of course, once the show starts, he realizes that he, in fact, does need them, so he doesn't even hesitate to unplug my cable so he can listen and mix the show on headphones. It's little consolation, but at least he set the mix during the first song and then plugged my cable back in for the second and third songs.

It had no RCA outs, no 1/8" group outs, no XLR outs, no nothing except some outputs to get the signal to the main PA speakers. That's not ideal, but I've used the headphone jack plenty of times before and I can get perfectly useable audio that way, but I would never do that without asking the person mixing the show if it was OK if I took that output, meaning that the mix engineer wouldn't be able to listen on headphones.

So, that's what I did, and no doubt the mixer guy said 'ya, no problem, I won't need headphones, I'll just listen to the PA.'

And of course, once the show starts, he realizes that he, in fact, does need them, so he doesn't even hesitate to unplug my cable so he can listen and mix the show on headphones. It's little consolation, but at least he set the mix during the first song and then plugged my cable back in for the second and third songs.

They're a great bunch of guys, they had a great tour crew, and the album that they'd recently released and were touring in support of, Something for Everybody, is an amazing album and is still in high rotation at my house 10 years after its release.

This concert was when Devo was in their hard rock phase, due primarily to Bob1 turning up the distortion knob on his distortion stomp box to maximum. It's not really a sound that suits them I think.

But the good news is that his guitar is buried in the mix more so here than the other Devo recordings I made, and the synths are more prominent as well, which makes for a more pleasing combination. This is my favorite recording that I made of them because of that.

If you want to hear Devo sound like a heavy metal band, go find that abomination of a recording of them at The Observatory in Orange County as recorded by Moshcam. It's all over YT. I have no idea who mixed that recording or why they thought it was a good idea to make Devo sound like Meshuggah.

The only thing I can think is that the singer recites a few lines from the 1960s rock song House of the Rising Sun (at about 17:00 in). But it's not like the band is playing the song; the singer is just babbling off the lyrics to more improv noise with a drum beat. Is that why YT killed the video? Do they consider that copyright infringement? Ridiculous.

But what does YT care? You've heard the expression regarding monstrosity companies like Google: 'too big to fail'? Well, Google/YT isn't too big to fail, they're too big to care. There are so many thousands of videos uploaded every minute to YT, what the hell do they care if they kill one of them, even if it is on the flimsiest of justifications?

This show featured lots of technical difficulties. I don't remember what exactly the problems were, but I edited out a couple gaps of no music of two or three or four minutes in the middle of this set. Problems with drums or mics or vocals? I don't remember. And even now, you'll hear guitarist Brad Laner do a four and a half minute improvisational noise thing at about the 26 minute park, because I think the bassist broke a string and had to replace it.

So, not the smoothest show, but at well over an hour, they do manage to play a bunch of tunes.

For me, doing the mixing and mastering of rock bands is much different than electronic music artists. With electronic music, there's no acoustic sound coming off the stage, so it's very easy for me to control, and I usually end up using about 85 or 90% board feed versus 15 or 10% room sound in the final mix.

With rock music, the board feed always sounds super awkward because there's so much acoustic sound coming off stage (drums, guitar amps, bass amps), that the board feed doesn't usually have much more to it than vocals. So, I end up using a whole lot more of the room mics in the final mix with rock bands. It's usually more like 50/50 board feed vs room mics.

Elevate Festival in Graz is one of the premiere music and social awareness festivals in all of Europe.

Graz is a smallish town in the southeast of Austria, and Graz is generally known for two things- it's a college town, and that Arnold Schwarzenegger grew up in a suburb of Graz. Now that Elevate Festival has been a yearly occurrence since the mid 2000s, Graz is now known for three things. Well, also that complete eyesore of an art gallery building, so four things.

Elevate is a week-long festival, with all sorts of political and social panel discussions, demonstrations of the latest high-tech innovations, and a bunch of music.

The four music stages of Elevate sit at the top of a mountain in the center of town. Outdoors, there's a main stage and a secondary stage, and two more stages sit inside the mountain. Seriously, they are caves, and the mainstage is gigantic with a massive sound system, and the second stage is where all the crazy music happens.

The first night in the small cave features experimental and avant-garde musics of all styles and instrumentations. The second night features hard, aggressive electronic music. Industrial / breakcore legend Eiterherd has been involved with the festival since the beginning, and has organized all the bands for this venue.

So if you find yourself in that part of the world in October, look it up. Because Graz is such a small town and Elevate is such a high profile event, finding a hotel room can be a challenge. But if you can work it out, you won't regret going.

I think Raoul Noisex was having some problems with his low end synth in this performance. It seems to cut in and out at random spots in multiple songs. Still sounds pretty good.

I think Raoul Noisex was having some problems with his low end synth in this performance. It seems to cut in and out at random spots in multiple songs. Still sounds pretty good.

But a couple other things baffled me. First, it was posted super small size- 400 x 224. No doubt they’d originally recorded in 1080, so why post something so ridiculously, unwatchably small?

Second, the audio mix was absolute rubbish, even though it, too, was professionally recorded, with big stereo sound and stereo audience mics, like the way I do it. But whoever mixed it thought it best to drop all of the low end out of the mix so that it sounded like some shitty 1970s transistor radio.

I was reminded of it when one of the songs popped up in my car the other day, which prompted me to do a full remaster of it. Luckily, I still had the original video tucked away in one of my hard drives.

So I grabbed the audio, pumped some healthy low end back into it, and gave it the usual treatment of fixing levels, smoothing out all the rough edges and whatever else it needed. This is the audio you hear here.

Even though the video is ant-sized, I went ahead and re-synced my new audio remaster to the video. I’ll try to post it to YouTube, but they’re so draconian about copyright issues, I doubt they’ll allow it.

Remastered using Ocenaudio and Presonus Studio One 4, with Izotope and FabFilter plug ins, April 2019.

So I'm calling this the golden era of Venetian Snares, in the years between 2001 and 2005. Those were the years when he composed his hardest, and most relentlessly dark music, and that's the stuff I love the most from him.

Doll Doll Doll (2001), Higgins (2002), The Chocolate Wheelchair Album (2003), Find Candace (2003), Infolepsy (2004), Meathole (2005), Winnipeg is a Frozen Shithole (2005). It is music from those albums that make up the bulk of this performance.

Certainly, I like much of his music both before and after that era, but none of it matches the sheer brutality and at the same time captures the mind-blowing, genre-defining style that secured his place as the most revolutionary electronic musician of the early 21st century.

I don't think this is the complete show. It starts too abruptly, although I did my best to cover it up and make it sound proper. Plus, his sets would normally go an hour and 20 or 30 minutes, so at an hour and 8 minutes, this one seems truncated.

I'm pretty sure I ID'd the tracks accurately, but if something needs correcting, lemme know.

Goblin live at Donaufest in Krems, Austria, 23 April 2009.

This is a significant recording because it's one of the last shows performed by the band where all of the original members were still in the band. I'm not 100% up on my Goblin history, but if I remember correctly, in the years prior to this recording, they had broken up and reunited several times, but the reunions would never last too long, and they would end up disbanding every time.

And even that wouldn't be that big of a deal, because there are plenty of bootlegs and tv performances and other live recordings of the band, but this one sounds best by far. The drum sound is cracking, and it has a superior distorted Rickenbacker bass sound, and the keyboard/organ sounds are amazing, and the mix is 100% spot on.

The unfortunate part is that this is obviously not their entire performance of that night. It's only 26 minutes, and that includes the long-ish intro and a solid minute and a half of outro applause. I remember seeing some complete tracklist of this show at one point, and it was about an hour and a half. Only these four songs in this recording were ever posted to the internet.

The original recording was done by the ORF, the national public radio network in Austria. I sincerely hope that they did actually record the entire show and that the master recording survives somewhere in a basement of their studios. It would be a landmark live recording of the legendary Italian prog rock band.

Especially considering that shortly after this recording, they broke up yet again. And again I'm a bit foggy on this, but I think now there are actually two Goblins where half of the members play in one band and the other half in the other. One generally goes by the name Claudio Simonetti's Goblin, and they have been very busy touring quite a lot, even doing their first US tour, which I caught in Hollywood. Further confusing matters, they were also called New Goblin for a while, as you'll see on the cover of their live album recorded in Rome in 2011. The other band I think still goes by the name Goblin, and plays all the same songs, but has different members in the band.

Another reason why this recording would be the ultimate live Goblin recording if the entire thing were released, is because the replacement members in Claudio Simonetti's Goblin don't measure up to the original members. The original Goblin, as heard in this recording, are a prog rock fusion band. The replacement members in the new Claudio Simonetti's Goblin (the drummer and bassist) obviously have their roots in heavy metal, which doesn't fit the music at all. They sound like a heavy metal cover band playing Goblin songs, and to my ears it doesn't work. They've listened to too much (and are seemingly trying to emulate) Pantera and not enough Weather Report.

And that live in Rome album is a glaring example of how misplaced they sound, as they come across as a heavy metal jam band, and it's rather embarrassing.

Which is why I'm so big on this Donaufest recording. I'm sure there was all sorts of tension and turmoil behind the scenes, but on tape it sounds effortless and magical.

Goblin live at Donaufest in Krems, Austria, 23 April 2009.

This is a significant recording because it's one of the last shows performed by the band where all of the original members were still in the band. I'm not 100% up on my Goblin history, but if I remember correctly, in the years prior to this recording, they had broken up and reunited several times, but the reunions would never last too long, and they would end up disbanding every time.

And even that wouldn't be that big of a deal, because there are plenty of bootlegs and tv performances and other live recordings of the band, but this one sounds best by far. The drum sound is cracking, and it has a superior distorted Rickenbacker bass sound, and the keyboard/organ sounds are amazing, and the mix is 100% spot on.

The unfortunate part is that this is obviously not their entire performance of that night. It's only 26 minutes, and that includes the long-ish intro and a solid minute and a half of outro applause. I remember seeing some complete tracklist of this show at one point, and it was about an hour and a half. Only these four songs in this recording were ever posted to the internet.

The original recording was done by the ORF, the national public radio network in Austria. I sincerely hope that they did actually record the entire show and that the master recording survives somewhere in a basement of their studios. It would be a landmark live recording of the legendary Italian prog rock band.

Especially considering that shortly after this recording, they broke up yet again. And again I'm a bit foggy on this, but I think now there are actually two Goblins where half of the members play in one band and the other half in the other. One generally goes by the name Claudio Simonetti's Goblin, and they have been very busy touring quite a lot, even doing their first US tour, which I caught in Hollywood. Further confusing matters, they were also called New Goblin for a while, as you'll see on the cover of their live album recorded in Rome in 2011. The other band I think still goes by the name Goblin, and plays all the same songs, but has different members in the band.

Another reason why this recording would be the ultimate live Goblin recording if the entire thing were released, is because the replacement members in Claudio Simonetti's Goblin don't measure up to the original members. The original Goblin, as heard in this recording, are a prog rock fusion band. The replacement members in the new Claudio Simonetti's Goblin (the drummer and bassist) obviously have their roots in heavy metal, which doesn't fit the music at all. They sound like a heavy metal cover band playing Goblin songs, and to my ears it doesn't work. They've listened to too much (and are seemingly trying to emulate) Pantera and not enough Weather Report.

And that live in Rome album is a glaring example of how misplaced they sound, as they come across as a heavy metal jam band, and it's rather embarrassing.

Which is why I'm so big on this Donaufest recording. I'm sure there was all sorts of tension and turmoil behind the scenes, but on tape it sounds effortless and magical.

I came across this Fields of the Nephilim board tape on Dark Circle Room, and the original flac is downloadable here- http://darkcircleroom4.blogspot.fr/2013/10/re-upload-fields-of-nephilim.html. It has a lot of things going for it:

1. It was recorded on the tour for Elizium, the same tour that spawned one of the best live albums of all time, bar none, Earth Inferno. This was a period when the band was at the height of it's powers (aka before they started losing original members and eventually morphed into a second-rate heavy metal band).

2. It sounds super amazing for a board tape. In stereo, no distortion, very good balance between instruments.

3. It's an epic concert. One hour and 40 minutes, including all songs from the Elizium album.

4. Technically, it's a very clean recording. Cassette was pretty much standard back in 1990 for these type of recordings, but this sounds much cleaner than cassette. So maybe dat was the original recording medium*?

But, with that said, I also noticed some deficiencies, some room for improvement:

1. Somebody had obviously transferred it from cd to flac at some point, because it has those little audio hiccups/gaps right where one song transitions into another. I hate those things, so I edited them out. There were also some fade outs and fade ins to edit out the time between encores, so I edited those out so it now sounds like one continuous recording.

2. In the original flac, the one minute intro thing is not quite in tune with the intro guitar of the first track, Preacher Man. Not everybody will notice stuff like that, but I'm a musician, and that stuff makes my ears cringe. So I pitched that intro down 1/4 of a step, and now it's perfectly in tune (Waves SoundShifter Pitch to the rescue!).

3. The bassist misses a note in one of the songs, so I fixed it.

4. The entire recording needed the standard remastering treatment, so now it sounds a bit fuller, ballsier, sharper, crisper, and all around more pro.

* I have suspicions that this isn't a standard board tape. First of all, the crowd sounds are much too present to have been picked up by only the mics on stage. Plus, the crowd is in stereo. Which means somebody set up mics specifically to capture the crowd sounds, and there's absolutely no reason to do that except for the specific purpose of multi-track recording the concert for a live album. Also, you can hear in the intro of Blue Water where the crowd is cheering the previous song's performance, and when Carl starts singing, the crowd sounds drop off quite unnaturally. That tells me that the at least the crowd was multi-tracked, and had their own faders.

Secondly, the mix is just too good for a board tape. I suppose that could be a coincidence that the relative volumes of all the instruments and vocals simply fell into place so the front of house mix sounded this perfect as well as the signal being sent to tape. Especially with all the volume coming from the amps on stage, as well as the monitors, it's too unlikely that this is a standard board tape.

Have you seen the Visionary Heads video? That's the live video from this tour, with many of the songs in that video being the same versions as on Earth Inferno, and a couple extras. You will notice in that video that there are many shots that are used and reused and reused again. That recycling isn't that big of a deal; I never gave it too much thought. But now as I hear this Hummingbird recording, I have a somewhat far-fetched theory-

I think this Hummingbird show was professionally audio and video recorded, but for one reason or another was never released, neither audio nor video. The video that was recorded on this night was meant to supplement the footage that became the Visionary Heads video, but for some unknown reason wasn't able to be used. Or maybe I'm completely wrong, but in any event, I strongly suspect this show was multi-track recorded (or perhaps submixed to ADAT with drums on two tracks, guitars/bass/synths on two more, vocals on another and the crowd sounds on two more), and somebody had the wherewithal to mixdown a copy of the entire concert for themselves to a couple cds (which is why there's also a break in the original flacs right at 51:30, thus splitting the concert into a first and second half, because the full concert is far too long for a single cd's 80 minute capacity), and those cds eventually found their way to the internet.

It's just a theory. I dunno.

Despite having one of the lamest monikers in all of electronic music, Dj Acucrack made some amazing music. Here's the duo, captured at DNA Lounge in San Francisco in 2006, before the death of founding member Jamie Duffy.

Industrial strength drum and bass with many samples of metal guitars (ala Pantera, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails…). They pack a whole lotta music into 34 minutes.

Despite having one of the lamest monikers in all of electronic music, Dj Acucrack made some amazing music. Here's the duo, captured at DNA Lounge in San Francisco in 2006, before the death of founding member Jamie Duffy.

Industrial strength drum and bass with many samples of metal guitars (ala Pantera, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails…). They pack a whole lotta music into 34 minutes.

This is another Autechre board tape that I post-produced into a concert recording- gave it a lot of crowd sounds, some room ambience, and remastered the actual music as well.

There are a handful of Ae board tapes from the 2001 tour out there, and this Toronto performance is one of my favorites, so I wanted to give it some special treatment and really fix it up.

Most importantly, there was a nasty bit of digital clipping immediately after the 6 minute mark which I fixed up manually, which required about a half a day of tedious pencilling out flattened waveforms in Soundtrack Pro, but it's worth it.

I've seen the venue listed for this show as being the Steam Whistle Brewing Company and also The Opera House. I don't know which is correct, or if both are correct, or if one is more accurate than the other.

Ok, so this Autechre doesn't qualify as being an 'exclusive live recording, recorded, mixed and mastered by me' as it says on my front page, as I didn't actually record this myself. But what I did do is take this board tape (which is readily available from numerous places around the internet), started out by fixing up any anomalies and giving it a general remastering, and then added in some crowd sounds so as to make it sound as close to an actual live concert recording that I could. Board tapes are cool and all, but proper concert recordings are superior, and I've transformed this lifeless, sterile board tape into a superior live album.

Ok, so this Autechre doesn't qualify as being an 'exclusive live recording, recorded, mixed and mastered by me' as it says on my front page, as I didn't actually record this myself. But what I did do is take this board tape (which is readily available from numerous places around the internet), started out by fixing up any anomalies and giving it a general remastering, and then added in some crowd sounds so as to make it sound as close to an actual live concert recording that I could. Board tapes are cool and all, but proper concert recordings are superior, and I've transformed this lifeless, sterile board tape into a superior live album.

This is one of the few shows that I'll post where I didn't record the show. Also of note- Richard throws in a couple Drumcorps remixes at the end of this set, and one of them he pushed to full-on ridiculous, cartoony BPMs. I slowed it down to a much more reasonable tempo, which is much closer to the BPM of the original track.

If you've not heard it, you probably know that many people who heard it live on the night before Halloween 1938 didn't realize it was merely a dramatization of H.G.Wells' book of the same name. Because the show was nationally syndicated, mass hysteria broke out throughout the country, and especially in central and northern New Jersey where the fictional events took place.

That original radio broadcast is very well done, but I've always wanted to add some sound effects and music to give the whole thing an updated sound. I edited out the fat, raided my sound effects library and threw in some (mostly gloomy, spooky, dark) ambient music. I'm sure if they would have had the tools back then as I do now, they would have used them similarly.]]>
