Matthew David Scott was born in Manchester, England but has lived in Wales for over a decade. He also spent four years living in the USA but is now back in Newport.
A founder member of the award-winning theatre company Slung Low, Matthew has had his work produced by many of the UK’s leading theatres including the Barbican, the Almeida, the Lowry and Liverpool’s Everyman. Slung Low is based at the HUB, five formerly disused railway arches in Holbeck, Leeds which are now used as a performance space for touring artists and a community arts space for those who need it.
Matthew has also had two novels published by Parthian books: the Dylan Thomas Prize long-listed, Playing Mercy (2005), which Niall Griffiths called “A mighty and moving hymn to belonging, pride and growth”; and The Ground Remembers (2009) which was described by the New Welsh Review as “Finely tuned” and of using “razor sharp dialogue and minimalist scene-setting to tell a vivid, contemporary story with mythical overtones.” He has been a recipient of a Literature Wales Bursary and shared in the 2008 Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award with his fellow Slung Low members. He is a member of The Welsh Academy.
Matthew also co-runs the music and literature night Balloon, and has put on artists such as Willy Vlautin, Chris Killen, Richard Milward and Kong.
