"‘Groovy’ was released as the A-side of a vinyl single in Japan in the fall of 1979 as part of an advertising campaign for an avant-garde clothing company. I was completely free to compose and produce what I felt was appropriate for the B side as long as it was in the same genre, and that is how ‘Cry Of The Lone Wolf’ was created. The sound style highlighted the very avant-garde glossy plastic look and image of the clothing company, utilizing a hypnotic repetitive tight synth oriented groove. The recordings took place on August 29, 1979 at Sound Castle Studios in Los Angeles and I chose the very best recording musicians that I frequently worked with including Jim Gordon on drums who was part of Eric Clapton’s band Derek & The Dominos and co-wrote his hit song ‘Layla’, as well as recording with George Harrison, the Beach Boys and Alice Cooper. David Hungate played electric bass and was one of the founding members of the hit band Toto. Michael Boddicker played all the synths and did the vocoder vocals. Michael was one of the most in demand synthesizer players in L.A. at that time, and played on most of Michael Jackson’s hit albums. Tim May played the electric guitar and has played for the Pointer Sisters and Whitney Houston. His debut album ‘Sunny Day’ saw a limited release but the restrictions of solo recording didn’t provide the creativity he desired and he was soon looking for other musicians to collaborate with. A few years and a number of band member changes later he found his perfect writing and recording partner, Frank Mollena. They are both multi-instrumentalists with Henning playing acoustic guitar, drums, congas, percussion and providing the vocals on ‘The Real McQueen’ and Frank playing bass, keyboards, electric guitar and programming the drum machines. The bands recording line up was completed by Alexander Rischer and they set out to rejuvenate their collective love of the classic LPs from the late 60s and 70s.

Starting with the rolling, gentle breeze of ‘Always Coming Home’, Mountaineer effortlessly mix latino rhythms with subtle pop melodies as main composers Henning Wandhoff and Frank Mollena are accompanied by fellow band mates Alexander Rischer (electric guitar) and Anna Bertermann (vocals) plus Christian Ebert on omnichord.

Next we have the album’s title track with the more uptempo pop vibe of ‘The Real McQueen’ providing a very radio friendly chorus and harmony whilst ‘Come Alena’ sounds like Prefab Sprout chilling on a desert island hammock and ‘Circlemakers’ is pure sunshine filled, laidback bliss – perfect for those lazy, hot summer days.

‘Gush it Gosie’ provides an instrumental interlude that lets the pedal steel guitar of Oliver Stangl shine through and ‘White (I’m Clouds)’ sees further collaboration, this time from Patrick Gobel on drums as the track rides off on a sea of Wurlitzer style organ.

Another instrumental interlude is provided by ‘Always Coming Home (Theme)’ before ‘Golden Chalk’ fills the premise of the three-minute pop song perfectly. ‘Limbo’ slides along on the back of some wonderful backing vocal harmonising whilst ‘Blown Away’ sees Patrick Gobel return on drums giving the track a classic bossnova backing.

Finally ‘When We Love Life’ sees Anna and Henning’s voices sparring in beautiful, poetic motion as the pedal steel guitar adds extra intonation and feeling before ‘Always Coming Home’ makes a final reprise to close the bands second long-playing chapter.

The girl-boy vocals work like a charm over a fantastic band, with stunning lap steel work, easy drums and a whole host of other instruments making for a complex yet easy listening vibe. All twelve tracks leave their mark, yet come together beautifully as a whole. It's no surprise that Leng would choose artists that suit their sunshine roster and this album is the sound of the first morning you unzip your jacket on the walk to work.

2014 is the 10th anniversary of the San Francisco based producers 40 Thieves releasing their first EP and now they come through with their debut album ‘The Sky Is Yours’ for Leng Records.

Core members Layne Fox, Corey Black & Jay Williams call on their bevy of friends to contribute to the group’s diverse sonic make up. Travis ‘TK’ Kirschbaum was a co-founder and key contributor and local best buds Qzen, Alona, Rita Mazlan, Jason ‘JP Soul’ Peters, Chris MacGrew, Masahiko Kiritani, Dave Dick, Victor Critchfield, Colin Klingman, Dave Kurzman and Larry Hamilton have all played various roles in past and current productions.

Over the years 40 Thieves have connected with likeminded labels including Rong Music and Permanent Vacation to release a small handful of original singles and EP’s. One in particular, 2008′s “Don’t Turn It Off,” caused such a commotion it wound up on a few dozen CD compilations and was voted Best of the Decade by Beatport in 2010. Over the next few years the Thieves had the chance to remix great artists including Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Gary ‘Chocolate Star’ Davis, Plastique De Reve, and Johnny Dynell.

Whether they’re creating cosmic odyssey soundscapes or lazy mutant house, 40 Thieves like to interweave live instrumentation with programmed electronics, their sound would be equally at home at the Mudd Club circa 1983 or in the headphones of an Ibiza beachgoer circa 2083. Having wowed critics and crate-diggers alike with 2012’s acclaimed Magik Cyrkles compilation, Psychemagik are now ready to unleash the follow-up, Magik Sunrise.

Bristling with psychedelic, cosmic and curiously Balearic oddities hand-picked from the depths of their vast record collections, Magik Sunrise is, if anything, even more inspired that its predecessor.

Given that Magik Cyrkles was widely considered to be one of the best compilations of 2012, that’s some feat. That collection garnered praise across the board, appearing in the end-of-year charts of Rough Trade, Juno and Piccadilly Records. As if that wasn’t enough, DJ magazine also described it as “f***ing great!”

The public seemed to agree with their assessment. The limited-edition gatefold, double-vinyl edition of the collection sold out within two days and now changes hands for upwards of £50 on Discogs.

For Magik Sunrise, the Kent-based duo has dug even deeper into the dusty corners of their record vault, deep in the Cosmic Forest. The result is another inspired, 15-track collection that gleefully skips between all manner of forgotten gems and little-known nuggets, occasionally stopping to acclaim an otherwise unknown track or artist.

Off-kilter African reggae (Max Adioa) nestles side by side with eyes-closed deep-jazz funk (Rob Mehl, George Oban), while the stoned, Balearic prog rock of Jeff Liberman jostles for position with the Steve Miller Band-on-valium goodness of Fox’s “The Juggler”. Then there’s the Roxy Music-ish grooves of Joey Newman, the drifting new age ambience of Iasos (whose “Formentera Sunset Clouds”, from the 1975 album “Inter-Dimensional Music”, is a highlight) and the folksy bliss of Yves Simon.

Artists originally ignored first time round, such as Daniel Mathieu, Cherubin, Susana Estrada and Steve & Teresa, are given a place in the spotlight. In fact, Leng spent a considerable amount of time tracking down each artist, allowing them to tell their stories, give the inside history of each track and relive their musical adventures – however previously obscure or overlooked.

“A lot of these artists have been hidden from the music industry for some time,” says Leng’s Simon Purnell. “Us finding them has proved to be a big deal for them, because these tracks were very important to them and this album has brought back their memories of that time.”

Their wares, from misty-eyed acoustic rock to slowed-down blue-eyed soul, sound sublime in Psychemagik’s new setting.

As ever with Leng and Claremont 56, much attention has been paid to the artwork and packaging. Long-time Psychemagik collaborator, acclaimed illustrator Luke Insect, once again handles design duties. His illustration – part pagan, part medieval alchemy, part prog rock revivalism – effortlessly matches the wide-eyed mood of Psychemagik’s brilliant selections.
