- Why did you join the protest?
On 28 May 2013, I was one of the 30-40 people that who heard the news trees will be destroyed and came together at Gezi Parki at 7:30 am to stop the machines. That day, they managed to knock down the trees a little, with police violence and pepper gas. I did not expect that the events will be spread to the world. I hope that they are spread to places that they are not spread as well.
- Were you surprised by the police violence?
No. But, until these happened, the foreign press was telling tales of a developing and enriching turkey, culturally and economically. the violence and waywardness in those events are in direct relationship to this. I guess this should also be underlined as much as police violence.
- Is this a cultural as well as a political struggle?
Turkey has the highest number of imprisoned journalists, the first in Europe and third in the world vis a vis worker’s deaths, the biggest “palace of justice” in the world has been built in Turkey where countless number of laws are passed. In such a place, struggle against the state is a struggle for being human and a folk war. It is very easy to comment on. There is no need to develop cultural theses. “The higher the number of laws, the backwards the country”.
- Can the protesters win anything?
For example, taking over a digger and chasing police tank is a gain. Also this vehicle is put on sale on the internet. If it is sold, it will be another gain.
It shows that something could be won in protests to stop the greed and the opening of natural entities and resources in these lands and in this geography to plunder, in the hands of today’s nationally dressed imperial state with multinational companies, in line with neoliberal policies.
- Will you use this incident in your music/art?

In our country’s environment of toolerance and dialogue, this time, another accident happens in a coal mine. The utmost authority decrees: “it is in the nature, in the destiny of this event.” And adds: “I say it is in this occupation’s destiny. Nobody’s mental capabilities and intellectual depth is enough to discuss this issue out of this context. Why not? Because, if you do not have faith in destiny, then I have nothing to discuss with you.” In other words, no one can dare to sweep the wide-spread affluence under the rug, and those bother to open up their mouths against the unconcealed upturn, are naturally knocked out of the government’s faith-bound decree rocket; before they even see the stratosphere, they plunk.

The utmost authority thinks the best for all of us, only he can say what is in our destiny. He is omniscient, and hence a superman, and us, mortal souls are expected to bow and scrape in the presence of his Excellency. As it is in the decree, the country takes an undeterred upturn on a global scale to the benefit of everybody. Yet, how can a reckless optimism and a consenting with foreseeable destiny go hand in hand, and that intimately? What sort of an elixir is it that these supermen are making us drink, and drink peacefully?
In this pretty environment of toolerance and dialogue, a wise old saint from the fifth dimension enters the scene. He haunts those who happen to forget the virtues of the decree, in their dreams. He gives a Rumi capsule to those who could not catch up with the ultimate quality of life. For those who could wait patiently for that dream to come true, he presents the global Lost church, where the gates to the secret open up and fill the environment with holy light, the living and the dead smile in delight. “You just want it” in this life, or the next life, maybe the past life. “Love” saves us all, and it saves its author more than all.

These palaverel tales are ineliminable. Those looking for fresh air get a black smoke, and the black smoke does fill every hole. So said optimism is but a new holy wine in old bottles. We think positive, things turn positive, and more, your soul mate enters the room, you take good vibes, things go excellently… If not “that is the destiny”, what else can we do, “there must be a divine wisdom to it” in every single geography. But, whose pockets is it that this wisdom is filling? Who is subjugated to whose power, for he has a divine wisdom accompanying to it?
Those natural born good souls, those innately positive-thinking brains, once pushed with scientific proof, sees a silver lining in every dawn. As a transformer, they never give up spreading good vibes, posivitiy is never gone. They are never late for their periodic aura cleansing, nor forget the daily antidepressant wax for their grinning faces. After all, buy a cosmic charm with the state and mafia subsidy, get an aura cleansing, and it is free for all ages.

Those born-flawed, less positive, lower souls are rapidly taught to think positive, become the owner of his own boat to sail in blurry waters. Their brains are formatted to get ready for uploading new programs, with the books, cassettes, seminars, natural stones, healing waters, colors of the worst kind and matter. The toll-manufacturing of those biometrically-beautiful on the outside, spiritually-beautiful on the inside are undertaken with utmost care, and it is rated high. The words of fresh liberalism’s iron lady ring once again in our ears: “there is no such thing as society” but individuals. Then on, the individuals are wind up for power, strength, self-esteem, and endeavor for a better standard of living. It only comes through positive thinking. As the value of the individual is calculated by his consumption scheme, the posetive are entitled to more, ever more, and the best of everything. It is so said that these individuals also are capable of changing the world, not by acting, but only through positive thinking. They learn its rules, they put them into effect, and they try to come over the difficulties. Yet, at the same time, as the rules dictate, they turn a blind eye to those having their own objections to the injustices. Objection brings negative vibes, and so do the facts of life, especially when it is not the happy news, pleasant events, and merry happenings.

The companies that “think big” can maximize their profit, with the motivation of their employees. With positive thinking, and a posetive world-view, the success is guaranteed. Then “if you are not successful enough, it is because you have not wanted enough.” The “individuals that think big” and the “firms that think big” take it as their natural right to destruct, destroy, and kill. “Doing what it takes” is already a sign of wanting enough.

Those who foresee the upturn, those who put their faith in this foreseeable destiny win a free pass to universes. Those who cannot free pass, see a text message in their mobile devices: “Unemployment is a virtual problem”, with the message fee already paid by the unemployed masses. It is expected that those who read the message are instantaneously enlightened, and pass to the palaverel universe. In this palaverel universe, it is advised that you listen to those who appear every second, think the best for you, and say “you will be bosses in the future, why bother the workers”. It is advised that you love thyself, and maybe go for a television program to receive positive vibes from the one you love. Indeed, poverty, crisis, running amok, death is only tangent to the positive thinking individuals, as they feed themselves with motivation, sustain a living with self-esteem.**.

Gezilla Baba ist ein Mann, der lieber Nein als Ja sagt. Dass in kaum einem anderen Land so viele Journalisten im Gefängnis sitzen wie in seiner Heimat Türkei, ist nur ein Missstand, den er in Bild und Ton anprangert. In seinen Live-Performances arbeitet sich Gezilla Baba zum Beispiel am neuen, protzigen Justizpalast in Istanbul, der für ihn die Großmannssucht der religiös-konservativen Erdogan-Regierung symbolisiert.

Dem türkischen Ministerpräsidenten unterstellt er, eine neoliberale und imperialistische Politik zu verfolgen und eine Art neo-osmanisches Reich anzustreben. Tendenzen für eine Sehnsucht nach der Wiedererlangung der alten Größe seines Heimatlandes sieht Gezilla Baba auch in aktuellen türkischen Filmen und Fernsehserien. Er selbst ist großer Fan des türkischen Action-Kinos aus den 70er und 80er Jahren und bedient sich daraus für seine Videoinstallationen. Die Helden kämpfen in seinen Videos mit Kung-Fu-Tritten gegen die „Neo-Osmanen“. Dass Gezilla Baba mit seiner Kritik an der Regierungspolitik nicht alleine ist, hat man unlängst auch anhand der brutal niedergeschlagenen Proteste rund um den Istanbuler Gezi-Park gesehen.

Gezilla Baba ist ein Mann, der lieber Nein als Ja sagt. Dass in kaum einem anderen Land so viele Journalisten im Gefängnis sitzen wie in seiner Heimat Türkei, ist nur ein Missstand, den er in Bild und Ton anprangert. In seinen Live-Performances arbeitet sich Gezilla Baba zum Beispiel am neuen, protzigen Justizpalast in Istanbul, der für ihn die Großmannssucht der religiös-konservativen Erdogan-Regierung symbolisiert.

Dem türkischen Ministerpräsidenten unterstellt er, eine neoliberale und imperialistische Politik zu verfolgen und eine Art neo-osmanisches Reich anzustreben. Tendenzen für eine Sehnsucht nach der Wiedererlangung der alten Größe seines Heimatlandes sieht Gezilla Baba auch in aktuellen türkischen Filmen und Fernsehserien. Er selbst ist großer Fan des türkischen Action-Kinos aus den 70er und 80er Jahren und bedient sich daraus für seine Videoinstallationen. Die Helden kämpfen in seinen Videos mit Kung-Fu-Tritten gegen die „Neo-Osmanen“. Dass Gezilla Baba mit seiner Kritik an der Regierungspolitik nicht alleine ist, hat man unlängst auch anhand der brutal niedergeschlagenen Proteste rund um den Istanbuler Gezi-Park gesehen.

2/5BZ video work “Gegen Die Bridge” (No Integration No Exotic) addresses the bridges of “gasionalism” and its reflections on the economical, political and cultural pipeline activities.

The screening of “Gegen die Bridge” ( http://youtu.be/GqDSyzGcn9g ) was censored by Nanna Heidenreich (Kanak Attak) in 2004 during their collaboration with 2/5BZ as solo performing multimedia artist,
whom they wished to invite only as an exotic “kanak” element in the event. The showing of the video, which was a short part of the event, was aimed to be prevented under no circumstances by senior managers who determined the concept of the event in a “stakeholding” position, apparently from a new perspective of unilateral collaboration.

However the censorship attempt was not successful and was also shown in events including 90 cities and 19 countries in Europe, N. America and Asia.

On Istanbul Mayday 2012, the windows of multinational corporations like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Burger King, and the windows and ATM’s of banks were broken by some anarchists in Anarchist Block. These attacks were turned into a wide-spread witch-hunt, in an attempt to defend the security and interests of international investment and to suppress opposition.
On 14 May 2012, the offices of some anarchist organizations, and the houses of activists were raided by Anti-Terror Squads at 5 a.m. Around 60 people were taken into custody, and their computers, hard drives, books, and irrelevant personal belongings were confiscated as evidence. One of the people who was taken into custody was an 8-month pregnant woman, who did not even participate to the Mayday Meeting.
It was learnt that those taken into custody were accused of “harming public property in the name of a terrorist organization.” Not only that most of the people did not even know each other, let alone be a member of a terrorist organization, no guns or other weapons were found in the house raids. The evidence sent to the Public Prosecutor was composed of some legal books, Facebook communication, or videos seen, or articles read, and shared on Facebook or from other anarchist web-sites. Also, a perfectly legal organization working on animal liberation, human rights, and ecological issues was tried to be shown as “the terrorist organization disguised as animal protection organization”.
The police questionings were filled with further absurdities. Not only that a “terrorist organization” were tried to be established out of anarchists who do not even know each other, and a “leader” was tried to be identified, but also that the very animal liberation-human rights-ecology organization was tried to be linked to KCK operations against the Kurdish opponents. Following the similarities in the sounds of the words Kuerk (Fur) and Kuert (Kurdish), the organization’s members were questioned on what they were doing in protesting the “Kurdish Fair” –whereas the organization was protesting the “Fur Fair.”
In the house of another animal liberation-ecology activist, telescopes and binoculars are taken as evidence, along with ornithology bulletins and books on nature. Also, the activists were questioned on the ecology organizations and movements against nuclear, thermal and hydroelectric power plants, indicating that the scope of the operation was not limited to smashing a few shop windows.
The mainstream media was fed with police videos identifying those who allegedly broke the windows with those taken into custody, and discrediting those taken into custody, through saying that so-called anarchists were some upper-middle class spoilt kids, if not a bunch of drunkards, and pot-heads. Their actions were said to create a wide “public outrage”, and even Minister of State, Bulent Arinc claimed that “they are the victims of a false mentality which can even destruct flowers. There are some sick souls who say against the police, they say “we are anarchists, we destroy and burn down anything, we crash the windows of banks, hospitals, tax offices.” It is them who pose the real danger. And our heroic police officers do their job against them.”
After a hearing on 18 May 2012, 9 of the people taken into custody were arrested pending trial. Yet, the operations continued, and 5 other people were also arrested in the following days.
As one of the activists taken into custody puts it, “people do not need the anarchists to insurrect. The rage against banks and global corporations can not be hidden, and the truth can not be disguised as something related to ‘a few marginal individuals’”.
It is also known that “100 journalists and 35 newspaper distributors were in jail in April. Journalists were in the streets and courts in order to claim the rights of their prisoner colleagues and to ensure a fair trial. 47 journalists were sentenced to prison in April 2011.
“100 journalists and 35 newspaper distributors are labeled as “journalists trying to create a media environment for the illegal organizations” by “following up certain news and incidents”, “writing a book”, “government-critical journalism” or “working for a Kurdish media outlet” claims.
More than 600 students are also in prison: “Cihan Kırmızıgül was arrested while waiting for the bus at Çağlayan, İstanbul on February 2010 and has been detained for 25 months. He was tried under allegations of “membership in an illegal organization” and “he might have been part of the incident” because he was wearing a keffiyeh (Puşi) which is a traditional Arab headdress made from a square black and white piece of cloth.
“He was released pending trial at the eighth hearing of his case on Friday (23 March) however as a result of the hearing held on May 11th Friday at Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court, he was sentenced to 11 years 3 months of imprisonment in total.”
As of 7 June 2012, Istanbul 10th Criminal Court sentenced Berna Yilmaz and Ferhat Tuezer to 8 years and 5 months of imprisonment for opening a poster demanding free education, at Prime Minister Erdogan’s March 2010 `Roman Opening’ meeting. Their fellow student Utku Ayar was sentenced to 2 years and 2 months, for aiding and abetting a terrorist organization.
In an open letter to the public, dated 27 May 2012, the anarchist prisoners, who were labeled as “Godless Terrorists” which implies a threat to their lives, at their first day in prison, stated that “We know that we are in prison just because of our political ideas. Because of that, we do not regret anything we did or we did not. We know the purposes of the ones who have arrested us: it is not just to threaten us so that we will not be involved in any action, but to turn us into the ones scared to defend the tiniest bit of their own rights. But the thing they do not know is that, the prisons of their disgusting civilization will not be able to suppress our ideas, and stop us from feeling stronger than ever before.”
Also, “Solidarity with Mayday Prisoners Initiative” held a rally on 2 June 2012. In the press declaration, it was stated that “the state’s attack against revolutionaries, workers, Kurdish people, women and the nature is continuing without cease. The wave of taking into custody and imprisonment now included anarchist-libertarian individuals and groups.”
Regarding the accusation of harming the property of multinational corporations and banks, it was said that “Although this accusation do not fall within the authority of Anti-Terror Squads, and Special Courts, the claim that our friends are members of a “terrorist organization” are in contradiction even to the universal bourgeois law and formal democracy.”
In relation to other arrests and false accusations, it was underlined that “The common point is that all those people are opponents of the government and the system. And this leads to one conclusion: the state and its power-holder, the government, see everyone that does not think like itself as terrorists. The presumption of innocence is disregarded for our friends by the police and the media.”
It was also said that “As the states and corporations fed by the environment of war and conflict they themselves have created are attacking life with economic games, it is life itself that the righteous fury of the people who are defending their life-worlds and freedoms are directed to the rulers.”]]> .

They may start to surveillance your computer and phone, they may tell you that they can hear and see you, and may send negative messages to your contacts, they may perform magic “shows” like calling via somebody else’s phone number without such person knowing this, they may attempt to commit suicide whereas trying also to spread the news to the environment that you would be responsible for such suicide, and may send you messages with threats that all newspapers would tell headline this suicide.
