"Sounds for an Empty House is a project in two phases.

Each hour was recorded and unleashed into the world as source material for an open call for new audio compositions.
Part 2 is the culmination of all these creative efforts, a collection of works reimagining ways that sound can connect people to place, illuminating minute details of a specific location through a unique audio experience. 44 artists have contributed to the three albums, creatives from Wales, UK, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Greece, Italy, Portugal, the Channel Islands, Turkey and the United States.

Each track is a unique and innovative remix, using only recordings from the 24-hour livestream as source material. The tracks are as varied as the artists, but the sounds created by the house itself serve as unifying elements, guiding listeners through the soundscapes - gusty winds through exposed drainpipes, a crackly panel breathing with the airflow, water dripping, a seagull on the slate roofing tiles."

With La Maïr, their offering is instrumental and experimental. On the face of it it’s far away from the pop sensibilities they displayed on Drifting, but deeper listening reveals once again Mike’s intricate guitar work is blended with Flexagon’s atmospheric textures and production.

The way this track came together was a departure and pushed both artists out of their usual comfort zones.

Locked away last autumn for a weekend in their friend’s private bar left them free to experiment. After completing some single-mic, direct to tape recordings for a couple of Mike’s existing songs they moved on to writing some brand new music.

Flexagon: ‘I don’t jam and can’t play easily with other musicians in real-time, so improvising in practice rooms or around campfires is out. Music writing is a solitary occupation, usually late at night, picking my way through chords, melodies and bass.’

Mike: ‘Like Flexagon, writing is normally a solitary process for me. Having to work in a completely alien way brings out a different kind of creativity and I think that’s evident in La Maïr.’

Flexagon: ‘I played the chord progression the first half of the track is based on and Mike improvised over the top. The heavily effected guitars were recorded live like that in the room, through a mic’d up guitar cab.’

In addition, most of the drones and textures in the introduction and first half are also Mike’s guitar work - slowed down and layered up to reveal unintended vocal and choral undertones.

It was the last day of our holiday on Paxos. We were enjoying a relaxing afternoon in Gaios next to the harbour. After sitting down at a quayside cafe the rain started, the sky turned black and it was pretty obvious we were in for a storm. I had my hand-held recorder with me and captured the sounds on the busy quay as the rain grew heavier and inevitably ended in a thunderstorm.]]>

‘What is The Dark Outside?

I wrote this track in early 2020 specifically for The Dark Outside. It should have been played as part of their broadcast at Aerial Festival in the Lake District. Their 24-hour broadcast, consisting entirely of unheard material, was due to take place in March 2020 and broadcast from Kurt Schwitters’ Merz Barn in Cumbria. As with so many other events, Aerial was cancelled.

Until Covid-19 hit, the only way to listen to the occasional Dark Outside events was to head near the broadcast site with your FM radio and tune in. The broadcasts aren’t archived or available online, they exist only in the moment. However, after the cancellation of Aerial festival the broadcast was streamed on Twitch, where many artists spent a lot of 2020 having never used it before.

The name Forms In Space comes from one of Schwitters’ collages (Mz 169. Formen im Raum).

The track includes broken breaks, shortwave sweeps, and some sounds that I don’t think FM radio can reproduce. I wanted to see what, if anything, would happen! The music is mostly samples, which reflects Schwitters’ collage work but isn’t the way I normally make music. The end result is not really like anything else I’ve produced. Along with being inspired by collages I also thought about what would sound slightly odd and disorientating to late night listeners in the middle of nowhere. Even better I thought if you could faintly hear in the distance other radios and groups of people tuned in to the same thing.

This is what happens when I'm allowed to write for violin, viola and cello and record them in St James concert hall - and then mix in a bit of late night harbour found sound. Many thanks to both Mariposa Strings and St James Concert and Assembly Hall for their help with this part. Without them no strings and no hall!

Most of the rest of the album then heads back into my more familiar territory of electronic instruments. Well apart from another piece with the strings, one with descant, tenor and great bass recorders and there's another track with no instruments at all it's all made from electrical humming noises. Plus diggers, seagulls, the sea, drunk people, burglar alarms, traffic, rain, wind and all sorts of other sounds you might find on an early morning walk in Guernsey................

I love walking around Guernsey late at night listening to music, mostly there is no-one around. You have the island to yourself. I also love the ambient sound of the environment blending with whatever I am listening to. Just as the daytime view out on the south coast cliffs or out over the Russel to Sark and Herm is never the same twice. Every night feels different too. The sky, stars and moon provide different amounts of light, from pitch black to moonlight bright enough to cast shadows.

The concept as it developed around St Peter Port 1am was this. Choose at night to record. Then hit the red recording button without too much thought. Work with the audio captured no matter what. With minimal curation and editing of the sound in post production. A true reflection of that moment in time."

The album 7 Nocturnes East will be released on 24.1.20. It will have an accompanying visual and video art exhibition featuring the work of seven artists at The Greenhouse, Guernsey Museum, Candie Gardens, Guernsey.

Synthesised drones imitate late night vehicles sweeping round the bay. Ambient washes, strings and electric piano are set over a watery location recording made at 2am on Belle Greve's Longstore slipway just before a thunderstorm hit the island.

Companion tracks to this work so far are the completely electronic Bordeaux 7am which was released summer 2018 and St Peter Port 1am. Like the new Belle Greve track, the St Peter Port inspired piece makes use of a location recording, but is scored for 9 string players and piano. It has already been performed live at St James concert hall in Guernsey, a recording of that piece will be coming later in 2019.

Well, the actual gift is a Tumbi (a northern Indian single-string instrument) that my Mum won in a raffle. Not really knowing what to do with it, she passed the Tumbi on to me. Into the collection of instruments it went, but only lay there for a short while before it was used and abused (as far as I know you aren't supposed to use a bow on one) for this track. There's also some highly manipulated Melodica playing of mine buried in The Gift as well.
