I consider it a meditative piece, but use it as you'd like. also just as a warning, this is nearly 20 minutes long.

a cadence in music is a succession of (at least) two chords (a melodic or harmonic configuration) that conclude a section, phrase, or piece of music. the intention of a cadence is to create a sense of resolution or a pause -- a feeling of finality. I basically plagiarized the last two sentences, because hey, this ain't for a grade, because I graduated from your school 15 years ago.

a plagal cadence is known as the "amen" cadence because in most hymns it's that part where people sing "Aaaaaamen", which is basically just a major chord with a 4-3 suspension. only the finest of the dissonances. I calculate what I consider to be the climax of this track to be around the 2:3 Golden Ratio moment in the track's timeline.

the only discernible melody in the piece occurs at the very end after the bass tone exits, and it is the melody from the ancient Gregorian chant "Gloria in excelsis Deo" which translates from Latin to "Glory to God in the highest".

the word "amen" is a declaration of affirmation, and is the concluding response to prayer. my dad, the pastor, prays a lot. he spends a chunk of his morning doing it. me? I do sometimes, but it's not to someone I call God, nor to my knowledge is it even a deity or god of any kind. I just pray to whoever is listening, because I know from watching my dad pray as I grew up that there's something about it that actually works. sometimes it doesn't, and any atheist out there would tell me I'm making a false equivalency (I know because I used to be one) but the truth is that I know it, and it doesn't matter to me if anyone else does, so I'm going to keep cracking at it.

when I was a kid growing up in Sacramento, CA, my dad and I used to listen to this radio program called Hearts of Space on public radio after our traditional Saturday night homemade pizza dinner with my family. the program featured all kinds of specials like ambient soundscapes by Brian Eno (et al), cosmic meditations, ethereal drones, sacred chants from around the world, and other kinds of spiritual/mystical music. sometimes there was just a straight up downtempo set. I was way too young to understand genres but I remember it being enticing for me, and my dad loved it because of its tranquility but also that it has a certain type of "other plane" quality to it that even for me now is kind of hard to explain. my dad is a very meditative person who appreciates music that helps your brain move. I mean, I was probably playing with power rangers toys or my game boy while it was on, but it definitely planted some seeds in my tiny child sponge brain. little did either of us know that this tradition of sorts would lay a foundation for me to one day becoming an electronic music producer. weird how things work out right? I wrote this for a class called Composer Colloquium which I remember being 0 units, yet it was required to get into the music theory and composition program so that my professor could see if I had it in me to compose scores. Don't know about all that but it did get me into the program. My writing style and idea processing vastly changed through the program.

In western and central Europe in the early 10th to 13th centuries, Catholic monks organized a tradition of musical worship by notating and singing monophonic chant to accompany the celebration of Mass and other ritual services. By the 15th century, Franco-Flemish composers were experimenting with polyphonic prolation canons, a type of composition where the main melody is accompanied by one or more imitations of that melody in other voices, played at different speeds. Four hundred years later, with the invention of magnetic tape for recording audio, composers strenuously manufactured a vast variety of tape music. By cutting, layering, splicing, and modifying sounds from various sources in the physical world, these musicians created extra-musical timbres (called musique concrète) that changed the way music as a whole was perceived by its listeners. Further down the line, ambient music producers have spent the past half-century evolving this idea of looping colorful sounds together to attain lush soundscapes. One of these producers in particular, William Basinski, uncovered and played back his thirty year-old tape drones to discover that the tape had naturally disintegrated to some degree, causing the sounds to die away in chaotic ripples that intensify over the progression of the repetitions and evoke the ominous feeling of tragic demise. “Tape Loops” is inspired by all of these ideas.

This composition mainly explores the ideas of musical statements being repeated at different speeds. There are eight loops total, each representing the melodic material from the 11th Century Gregorian chant Viderunt Omnes. Each voice has its own unique time signature in every loop, conjuring a sensation of metric distortion. By the end of each loop the instruments meet at a convergence point, and the next loop begins. As the final stretch of the piece comes about each voice begins to break apart into snippets of sound and, eventually, into nothingness.

The lyrics to Viderunt Omnes describe God’s oversight of the Earth, an especially symbolic message given the musical stylings of unity and togetherness the composition came to represent. “Tape Loops”, in a similar way, is all about the fellowship of harmony, the aesthetic of discord, and the alliance of heterogeneous planes of existence. My intention with this piece is to offer a feeling of time dilation against a spiritual setting, where the voices converge and diverge at their own paces (much like the relationships that enter and exit this experience of life), and eventually begin to disintegrate toward an inevitable closure.

Two diametric objects are binary opposites of eachother, such as water and land, but are connected symbolically and symbiotically. Both are necessary to the survival and existance of the other, each completing the circular motion of life. Two diametric people share more in common with eachother than anyone else in the world.

Immediately following the original version are four remixes by some of my [Fidelium] most-respected and favorite artists on IDMf (a tiny handful out of a very large amount.) Each interpretation is a whole new variation of the spirit and theme behind “God Tank”, telling a completely fresh story from the same sets of sounds, to the point that I consider this to be God Tank: Movements I-V. It is a fantastic balance of color, and I am extremely pleased with the creativity behind each remix.

The orchestra tunes and the double basses begin the steady rhythm of “God Tank” and at the opening of the original mix we are given the theme: a pizzicato arpeggio circulated by chromatic tones and longing, distant bells. From tuneboxii, who is known for his nasty, experimental dubstep tracks, the listener is taken down a different path. With syncopated tempos and tasteful distortion, tuneboxii twists “God Tank” into a gyspy-electronic anthem. After tuneboxii’s mangling of an already-mangled piece comes Toronto Is Broken’s dance flavor with a pumping sub bass and future garage rhythms. After this club-worthy explosion by Toronto Is Broken, IG88 brings us back down into his beautiful ambient mist, with a guitar-laden ballade that transitions into a foot-tapping hiphop track without warning. Finally, the epic recapitulation is handled by the perfect man for such a job: The Verb. “God Tank” is thus taken to a new height with this stellar composition and skillful craft.

It is with these four remixes that I feel that “God Tank” is complete. I am very lucky and proud to have my work enhanced by these talented producers, and I am overly obliged and happy to release this collection through IDMf for you, the listener.

I apologize for the quality but this is a track whose project file is completely lost on some hard drive somewhere, more than likely in hard drive heaven. This is the last remnant of Pantheon Eclipse we'll ever see, unfortunately. It's sad to see them die so young...

I made this in a little music studio I was renting in my hometown when I was couch hopping. It is the only music I wrote during that time of my life until I got myself situated with proper gear two years later. Had some pretty insane times in that studio...

So, I never really finished Pantheon Eclipse... the studio was gone, all of my synths, computers, drum machines, speakers, guitars, what-have-you went into storage for nearly two years. I thought I had saved the project file and I was wrong. I can't remember where exactly it ended up even... I've sort of waited to find it a few years. Instead I'll just give it to you.


From 2007:
Having taken a long hiatus from producing, this is my step back into the world of computer music. It's refreshing, because the sound of this piece really reflects on a lot of my older work that I thought I had moved beyond. The more orchestral, melodic type put to a slower beat. It's nice to take a break from drum and bass or dance music in general every now and then, and was very therapeutic to write this track, however rusty I may be in this field.]]>
