While serving the U.S. Army in Korea he was wounded and as a result, the drug addiction that had begun during his service got worse. Music inspired by short film "Robots in Paradise", by Caroline Jiang.
Quirky eclectic noise to ambient soundtrack music, featuring music created by robot / algortihms in concert with human, Paul Fletcher interventions. Produced by Paul Fletcher: tinkerer and wild audiovisual experimenter, animator, one time drummer for 1980's Melbourne experimental music group "Essendon Airport", member of "Undue Noise" Collective in Bendigo, screenprint poster and card maker, sculpture installation "Hidden Creatures" maker. This release features digital recording, resynthesizing and sequencing of guitar, field recordings, synthetic instruments, junk percussion, auto-generated arpeggio and chord patterns, Vocaloid and other synthetic human-robot sounds. These ten tracks started life as possible music cues for the short animated film "Robots in Paradise", by young talented artist and animator Caroline(Lingxi) Jiang. Several of the main themes were included in Caroline's graduating film completed at the University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts, School of Film & Television BFA in Animation. Some of the tracks relate to planned or deleted film scenes that have not yet got to see the light at the end of the arduous drawn animation process.

This electro acoustic challenge started off with the second draw in the kitchen , the utensils draw—boy what a lot of useless things have collected in there
for cooking with but the kitchen timer, knife sharpener , metal salad tongs, various scissors were all recorded for possible potential as percussive and gong like tones.
I tried to limit my processing to just cut copy paste, pitch and filtering effects( which still gives plenty of scope!)
Using Metasynth and Audition for processing and Logic for further assembly filtering and convolution reverbs
“the metal salad tongs and the kitchen timer” was conceived of as being in three parts , so apologies for the stately 7 minute duration,
the first and last part are mostly Metasynth processing and the middle part was made by putting the kitchen recordings as sample sources in Alchemy and Omnisphere virtual synths.]]>

I started with a photo Id taken of a spider web put into the image synthesiser in metasynth (U & I software) and played back with microtonal sine waves, a sampled triangle and traditional orchestral samples

I attempted to capture something of the transitory fluid states of enveloping darkness and altered states of awareness

Percussive sound at the start was made by playing the branches of a dried out old pear tree with superballs on the end of skewers!( with thanks to sound designer Diego Stucco for the inspiration for contact mic recording of trees as percussion instruments). All sounds started off with acoustic sounds recorded outside- old rusty steel oil drums and metal circular saw blades and the cap off an old telegraph pole as gongs and bells- Grain stretching, resonant filtering, image filtering and resynthesis in Metasynth, Main composition originally made in Metasynth, only tiny extra mixing and sounds added in Logic pro BUT then all re edited and structured in video editing program layering and overlaying synched sound visualisations from the original longer piece-"Tree Trunk3 WaterDepthSunlight"

I imagined this domestic kitchen of 2044 in a wealthy building full of all the latest gadgets ,that all generate algorithmic ambient music and attempt to sing their messages to you.( virtual synths, metasynth resynthesis of own voice,etc)
I have to add that I imagine a food replicator may as well just print you out a tablet or injection for that matter of vitamins, mineral, fibre etc....BUT I personally favour homegrown seasonal produce and hope that we can find better ways for this to continue!

I imagined this domestic kitchen of 2044 in a wealthy building full of all the latest gadgets ,that all generate algorithmic ambient music and attempt to sing their messages to you.( virtual synths, metasynth resynthesis of own voice,etc)
I have to add that I imagine a food replicator may as well just print you out a tablet or injection for that matter of vitamins, mineral, fibre etc....BUT I personally favour homegrown seasonal produce and hope that we can find better ways for this to continue!

This means both the sound of the device in question, as well as the location (kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc.) in which the device would be present. ANYHOW.. back to this "Circadian Vortex"...
I also liked the intensity,energy and potentially oppressive nature of extremes of heat and or cold and the gradual waking up and settling back down of
natural circadian rhythms- sunrise to sunset.
So I used the main temperature line graph as a source for creating melodic fragments or impressions, atmospheres and rhythms in Metasynth using instruments based on pure sine waves mapped to microtonal scales(this is the source of the organ like sound) as well as manipulations of piano and kalimba-like custom sample based instruments also in metasynth. The final composition was arranged in Logic according to the flow and structure of the original temperature graph and the feeling of rising and falling heat, rising and setting of sun, gradual waking,activity and resting of landscape and environment.]]> applying this to the overall structure of the composition but also at smaller scales applied to individual elements and even sounds
