there will be plenty of alternative culture to share - poems, stories and music – and some insight into creative process and what it actually means metaphysically to produce a podcast. there will be lots of sharp tangents, weird and unexpected flavours, passionfruit rants and we'll always wrap it up in tasty pastry.</itunes:summary>

we're doing a reading of the film which focuses on the divide between passionate, driven space cadet Sara and the chaotic, nihilistic drug taking of James.
we talk a lot about gender, a bit about skateboarding culture, and also compare this movie with our previous psychedelic horror film, Altered States.

wow, this film proved interesting.
this podcast is the first of our 'bad trips' psychedelic horror film club and we're talking about altered states.
you don't need to have watched the film to enjoy this podcast, in fact we're gonna go thru the entire plot so SPOILERS!

we're doing this in 2 parts to avoid a super-too-long podcast.
in part 1 we talk a little bit about the writer of the film, Paddy Chayefsky and his rather distinctive character.
we also go thru what happens in Altered States, with a wee bit of commentary peppered throughout.
and then we go on a massive tangent about Dr John C Lilly, known for inventing isolation tanks, talking to dolphins and taking a whole heap o' pyschoactive substances.

music this time is Jenny Nettles by Drumspyder
check out the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1030736333980390/

hopefully this draws attention to the situation of migrants and refugees, especially in the coronavirus pandemic but also in the wider context of the Hostile Environment (particularly in the UK, Ireland and the EU)

the main topic of this episode is Scott McCloud's "6 step" theory of art, from his book Understanding Comics. it provides a way of looking at all works of art/creation that draws us into the core question: "why are we doing this?"
it is a way of encouraging us to think more criticially about the art we consume, helping us develope a richer understanding and perhaps giving us more of a chance to create ourselves
in the context of news and social media, it might draw our attention to how we percieve the current pandemic, given the wildly different situations we all live in.

this episode we are also introducing BAD TRIPS, the droincore podcast psychedelic horror film club. next Friday we'll have a podcast focused on the film Altered States. get in touch if you need help watching it.
we made a facebook event for the film club, check the droincore facebook page.

in celebration of Internation Women's Day (8 March) we have a short podcast giving a reading of Ursula Le Guin's The Princess.

The Princess was a keynote address given in January 1982 opening a workshop conference of the Portland branch of the National Abortion Rights Action League in the US. it offers a thoughtful and powerful deepening of attitudes towards abortion, one of the fundamental rights of women, a right to control over our own bodies, a subject thoroughly appropriate to reflect on and honour at the time of the year when we not only celebrate women but also give attention to the fight of women against sexism, misogyny and the patriarchy.
what place does satire have in our hyper-consumerist culture?

this podcast is all about consent, specifically around sex. it might be a sensitive issue for some; hopefully this is still a safe space for talking, but there is a trigger warning at the start of the podcast.

we're mainly exploring how issues around consent can be a lot subtler and slippery than we might assume, and why that might be, especially considering the pervasiveness of implied (rather than explicit, or directly-agreed) consent.

the podcast follows the International Day of Consent (Nov 30), as inaugurated and celebrated by Irregular Arts and the Festival of Consent in Leeds. find out more about that here: http://consentculture.co.uk/
#idoconsent

we also reference a couple of other podcasts which are themselves amazing explorations of the same topic.

No (podcast series by The Heart): https://www.theheartradio.org/no-episodes
The C Word (by Black Radical Queer podcast): https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/black-radical-queer/the-c-word-D8_74bQHZPN/

mainly, the droin wants consent to be in more conversations, and this is our little contribution.
this isn't a podcast particularly for gamers, or non-gamers. it's about how dominant videogames tend towards an optimization for the sake of 'convenience'. it's a call to engage more critically with videogames, and a push to find games with innovative systems that challenge the dominantly popular 'shooty gun man' genre.
ceremonies that mark this moment have long been practiced across the world, and can provide a stable means for each of us to ready ourselves for the new season.

this time we share a bit of gossip about a brand new netflix show (because this is a contemporary podcast once in a while).

and then: sampling in hardcore tekno/techno as a layering of texts which, through recontextualisation, creates new meanings and commentaries.
that's a serious conversation about bang bang music right there.

to demonstrate these ideas we turn to Mad Max: Fury Road...
we revisit taoism to explore how it can be a helpful aid to as we try to remove ourselves from systems of oppression.
it's taking taoism for a short excursion outside of winnie the pooh into self-care and politics.

this week's music is It Ain't Over Til the Fat Lady Turns to Pixels by Spongebob Squarewave.

this week is all about taoism and winnie-the-pooh.

due to *not-wanting-it-be-long* and *digressing-into-other-things*, we really only talked about the tao as simplicity, the uncarved block, p'u.
so we kept it appropriately simple, let's say. featuring a Bear With Very Little Brain and the ruler of the universe.

there's also a short story to enjoy. this podcast's music is The Tao of Now by Saul Williams.
